Yeah, I know. But I thought that, given the season they've had up until this point, they might be able to do pretty well for a few seasons with a game manager QB. But Smith didn't even look like that in this game. Other than that TD throw to Ginn (which of course was called back) he looked as bad as Mark Sanchez out there. I know the Ravens' D is good, but even a loser like Tavaris Jackson was able to make some plays on them.

Niners, trade all your draft picks for the next 10 years to Indy and go get Andrew Luck. You need him.

They definitely need some O line help. Smith got hammered all game long. However, that last pass he threw was right in between the numbers of Ginn and he just dropped it. So, the guy does need some help from his receivers.

And I was SO GLAD I benched Gore in my fantasy league. I had a feeling he wouldn't produce too much against the Ravens defense even minus Ray Lewis.

That's what I've been thinking as well. however players do age, etc. & you do need to get replacements for them. What i'd do is i'd offer 2 first rounders, 2-3 second rounders, plus Kaepernick for Luck's draft rights.

Alex Smith was never a long term solution...we drafted Kapernick in the 2nd round this year...who's a year away from taking the starting the job but to be fair This is still Alex Smith team...he has played well all year long, not ready to give up on the guy so quick because he finally had one bad game...and its not like it was mainly his fault...we only had a couple days rest and fly all way to Baltimore for the game...u can tell the Oline was not ready...they just didn't make the adjustments like running a screen pass...I still believe In Alex Smith and he will take us to the NFC championship against the Packers...

Kapernick is no lock to win that job either

Sorry, but after 6-7 years of constant disappointment & excuses, i'm ready to jettison Smith & all his baggage. He'll be a great backup QB, but never starting material.

Sort of like David Carr

Yeah, the question ultimately becomes, sooner or later, "Can this guy win the game for us if we need him to?" If the running game is gone, the O-Line is shoddy and the defense isn't making the stops it needs to (and actually, the Niners' D was making stops through most of this game) then winning falls squarely on the QB and the WRs. Granted, the WRs made some mistakes, but Smith's decision making was terrible at certain points tonight. He looked as lost as John Beck at certain moments.

Hahaha I love it that we suffer our first road lost of the year and people are already to give up on us...Alex Smith didn't lose this game...all of our offense players were shut down and yet we were still two big plays away from changing the outcome...remember he was sack 8 freaking times??!! I don't care what QB u are Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers etc...you are not going to have a good passing game when u have no confidence in your o-line...We are 9-2...we only have one real challenge left against the Steelers the rest of the year...as much as I wanted the 49ers win today we have done too many positive things to not be successful the rest of the year...

Alex Smith has led us to a 9-2 record 2nd best in the NFL...I'd say he's doing just fine...

A good defensive game by the Niners but the constant pressure on Smith turned out to be the deciding factor.

That Niner defense was damn good even win a loss, stood us up on the goal line & even pushed Rice backward.

He didn't have Jim Harbaugh! he's the difference maker for our team this year...we just happen to play against his big brother who knows exactly what he thinks lol

When the Ravens don't turn the ball over, they tend to win these. Great defensive game to watch.

I'm thinking that Niners are going to have another huge slugfest against the Steelers. It'll be interesting to see how well Big Ben plays against them and how often he can hit Wallace for those long bombs. Because the Niners secondary did a good job of containing Smith and he's just as fast as Wallace.

That will be an interesting match up, especially after seeing how well they handled the Ravens there in the first half.

Would you have said that before this game though? This was his first bad performance in quite some time this season. The offensive line couldn't protect at all. There was a play where they literally had eight blockers and Terrell Suggs still got through for the sack.

The defense had zero pressure on Flacco tonight. That is going to have to change against the Ravens. Brooks and Aldon Smith were neutralized.

It's hilarious all the people in this thread overreacting because of one bad game. I don't remember all of this criticism against Alex when he played great against the Giants who have the most sacks in the NFL. Tonight the offensive line was garbage. And just because Alex isn't putting up fantasy football numbers doesn't mean he hasn't helped this team win. The run game has been great all season, and they haven't passed because they haven't needed to that much.

If anything this proves that most people haven't seen the 49ers play that much this season. 49ers wouldn't be 9-2 without Smith and a lot of the plays he has made this season. It goes hand in hand.

Are you saying Jackson is a better quarterback than Smith because of one game against the Ravens? Oh yeah and drafting all our draft picks for one rookie player? Just ask how that worked out for New Orleans and Ricky Williams.

If not for that chop block called on Gore early in the game it could have had a completely different outcome because Ginn went right to the house on that one.

Andrew Luck is no Ricky Williams, just saying.

The old line, "I taught you everything you know, but not everything I know," comes to mind.

Well hindsight is 20/20. Andrew Luck is still a rookie. Trading all of your draft picks for one player is ridiculous and stupid. Which is why it's never worked.

I also noticed a big difference in the game was Chilo Rachal coming in. The 49ers hadn't given up as many sacks since he last played a game. Adam Synder not being in really effected things. We have to get someone else for that position. Rachal is awful.

With all due respect, remaining with a player 6-7 years in the hope that he'll somehow make a miraculous turnaround is ridiculous. Any other team would've given said player his walking papers.

They lose by 3 instead of 10.
