2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions)

Well you could say that's because he doesn't always make box office fodder anymore. Minority Report and Munich ain't what you'd call typical Spielberg blockbuster films. But they're still great.

Spielberg (especially Spielberg), Cameron and maybe Lucas are brand names. They're known around the world and outside movie circles. Chris Nolan is not... yet.

Well, it'll be strenuous to prove with his next film being TDKR, but perhaps his upcoming Howard Hughes film could shed some light on the issue. The general audience probably isn't aware of who Howard Hughes is so if Nolan's name is not a brand, his film won't make more than 200 million at the box office.

Depends who he casts in it. And what sort of biopic it is. Hard to say at the moment really.

:funny:

Fair enough. Even with Nolan's name being marketed for this flick, it still won't break the 400 million mark.

You should watch the prologue then in IMAX. It gave me shivers.

The trailer wasn't a spectacle like The Avengers, but it was dark and more story-based. Just the idea of Bane 'breaking' Batman on-screen and Batman possibly dying/retiring is enough for me.

Quote me. MOS WILL break the 400 million mark worldwide.

You're on.

I certainly hope so though. The franchise needs this film to be successful in order to produce sequels, and The Flash and Wonder Woman adaptations to come to life.

400 million worldwide? I imagine it should do that easily. Now 400 million domestic? THAT'S going out on a limb.

I would bet big money that a large majority of people are at least passingly familiar with Hughes. Enough to name a few of his accomplishments or eccentricities at any rate. he's not exactly an obscure figure.

Yea, i imagine most would at least know him as the crazy guy who lived in a hotel for years.

Oh, I thought Returns had only made around 300 million.

Nevermind.

With inflation, this film should surpass 400 million.

There's no stopping Titanic director James Cameron at the box office. Even though millions of people already own Titanic, you can bet that they'll show up to catch the Oscar-winning film at multiplexes. Activity levels on Titanic's official Facebook page indicate that interest is high--on most days the pages adds more likes than The Dark Knight Rises, The Twilight Saga and The Hunger Games combined.

Insane... :)

I have to be honest, but I didn't know who Howard Hughes was until Scorsese's film hit in 2004. Granted, I was in high school at the time but nobody I was associated with had known the name Howard Hughes.

Superman Returns made Worldwide: $391,081,192

What I really want to see is MOS make over $400 m domestically and at least$400 m foreign.

Wishful thinking? Probably but these numbers would make it the 3rd highest grossing Superhero movie. With Nolan and Snyder on board and the good casting, I think its possible.

A collaboration between Nolan and Snyder was a fantastic idea.

I'll say this about Zack, he's severely under-appreciated. Snyder has potential, and it shines in 300, Watchmen and Sucker Punch. He has arguably the best visuals and SFX in Hollywood today (behind the master -- Michael Bay), and his action/fight cinematography is well above average (just minimize the slow-mo), but he's not a top-tier storyteller and writer.

People can believe what they want but they brought in The Nolans and Goyer for a legitimate reason. Man of Steel cannot afford to fail. Justice League along with Flash and Wonder Woman depend on how MoS performs.

If it does do good and is a good film I hope people give credit to Synder and dont ignore hes the director and say Nolan made it great. Hes helping no doubt about it but still.

No, I agree.

Snyder is not an incompetent director. I remain steadfast in my statement that Watchmen was one of best CBMs ever made. If MoS succeeds, Zack should get most of the credit.

My most wanted is still "Lincoln" by Spielberg.

If I were to make a list it would go like this:

1. Lincoln (Steven Spielberg)
2. Prometheus (Ridley Scott)
3. The Hobbit (Peter Jackson)
4. Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino)
5. The Dark Knight Rises (Christopher Nolan)
6. The Amazing Spider-Man (Marvel/ Marc Webb)
7. The Avengers (Marvel/ Joss Whedon)

It's such a shame Watchmen bombed. The more I watch that movie, the more I realize how much I enjoy it.

I can't wait for Lincoln.

Been a big fan of Snyder's since Dawn of the Dead. Loved Watchmen - saw it 3 times in theaters. Did not care for Sucker Punch that much but visually it was aces.

I think Man of Steel is going to be quite impressive.

Yea i love Watchmen, the two directors cuts anyway. I see some really dumb arguments from hardcore comic fans about why Watchmen is crap. Like it doesn't have all the symbolism of the comic, they changed the ending, they changed Rorschach's meeting with the nonce case etc.

Watchman was pretty much unfilmable. The fact that Snyder did do so well is a testament to his talent. Some parts of the movie are genuinely masterful, like the Comedians funeral and the way it shows the characters last memories of him. And Dr Manhattan's origin is one of the best things ever in a comic book movie.
