2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions)

Snyder's one of those directors whose movies' quality depends entirely on the script. With any luck on MoS, he should be working with a better script than, say, Sucker Punch or even 300, so it should be a good movie. If that's the case, both he AND the screenwriting team deserve the credit, since the script/story existed before he even came on board. That shouldn't be shrugged off just because some people here are sick of the word "Nolan."

That said, I do think Snyder and his particular eye for imagery can bring things to the table that other directors wouldn't have - including the more acclaimed director who is a part of said screenwriting team - and he will certainly deserve a lot of credit if he delivers in the action and visuals department the way I think he can. And he already deserves a lot of credit for his awesome casting, imo.

Also, I know people don't like his overuse of slo-mo. But in MoS it actually has a purpose; to show how fast Superman and the other Kryptonians are. The human eye couldn't see a Superman speed blitz, is what i mean. So using slo-mo in a fight between Supes and Zod would work because it shows they are moving so fast that everything else around them appears to be frozen.

I must see a scene like that, a proper, near FTL, speed blitz.

So far 2012 is off to a great start in terms of BO earnings. HOpefully the momentum will go on suring the summer months

No, I agree.

Snyder is not an incompetent director. I remain steadfast in my statement that Watchmen was one of best CBMs ever made. If MoS succeeds, Zack should get most of the credit.

If MoS is a success -> nolan will get most of the credit
If MoS is a failure -> snyder will get most of the blame

Go figure.

Not even Nolan can save Man of Steel. I think it will have a hard time passing 500m. Maybe 600m if its really, really good. And considering that the big blockbusters today make over 800m, I think it will be seen as a disappointment.

It really hasn't been that great so far. Better than last year, yes, but 2011 started really bad. At the moment 2012 is trailing behind 2008, 2009 and 2010. But it could catch up as early as March which seems to have a pretty strong line-up of movies this year with a few that should make over $100 million domestically.

300 was and still is a good movie. The internet's hate for it is ridiculous.

I'm honestly surprised Star Wars didn't do a bit better.

A Superman movie, that has the spectacle and awe inspiring visuals that come with a Snyder film, will make money. The trailers will be full of money shots and have "Produced by The Dark Knight trilogy's Chris Nolan" in big bold letters.

I am also suprised that TPM didnt do better but going forward if they do rerelase all the movies. I think the numbers can only go up considering TPM is the most disliked Star Wars movie.

I agree that Snyder will not get the credit he deserves, unless WB markets around Zack, but that is highly unlikely. Nolan's name and films will probably be the target in the marketing instead.

From producer Christopher Nolan who brought you The Dark Knight [Rises] and Inception...

From the creator Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception, Christopher Nolan. The Writers of Dark Knight Trilogy.

Man of Steel:
WB, will want it look like Christopher Nolan's team is making super man.

They're not gonna slap all that on there. Creator/Director of Dark Knight and Inception then given the situation, Christopher Nolan.

More than likely that will be the situation.

but is it wrong if this is the situation? if you know the background and just how little(fact) control Snyder has you can understand it easier.

I think Superman is well and truly Synders baby from here on in, even if the story is rock solid he's the one who's got to bring that to life. So the ball is in his court now as to who people praise for its success or failure. Worst case scenario is a good story goes to waste. You get the feeling that MOS is Synder's last real shot at the big time.

Who said it's a fact Snyder has little control over the movie?
common snese. 3 WB movies from Snyder underperformerd or bombed in the last 3 years.tehy gave him full control on Sucker Punch a movie that they knew will underperform. but this is now WB's baby. the superman. not just a superhero man .but superman. they are not in a position to give a director a lot control. this is now serious. Snyder is on a tight leash. thats a fact.

i am not talking about Nolan vs Snyder. WB as the studio has him on a tight leash.

If they don't trust him, why even get him on board for it?

I think it's quite obvious WB likes what Snyder does. Otherwise they would have told him to do one straight after Sucker Punch and he'd never work at the studio on a big budget movie again. Someone at WB obviously sees something in Snyder, as a director, not as a writer, and has given him their Superman movie.

You're making a pretty big assumption. Yes Snyder's last 3 movies have underperformed especially Sucker Punch. But you're speaking as if you know for sure that he doesn't have final say and that somebody was sent down to watch over him. And however this movie turns out I'm putting it all on Snyder. Nolan's role appears to be pretty minimal for the actual shooting of this movie since he's pretty busy at the moment.

FROM PRODUCER CHRISTOPHER NOLAN....CREATOR OF....INCEPTION...AND THE DARK KNIGHT (possibly sub in TDKR if it's as beloved)....AND THE DIRECTOR OF 300.....MAN OF STEEL.

Pretty much how it will go. Snyder's name isn't household yet, so they'll say 300 which still has a lot of love with general audiences (though I think it's terrible) and that will be tacked on after they get Nolan and TDK in there.
