2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions)

If The Hunger Games follows the same pattern as Twilight, Harry Potter and pretty much any big blockbuster these days it will make more money overseas than domestically.

Nikki Finke is saying $150m now!

Guys how big do you think the Hunger Games will open? I've been talking with some guys over at another site, and they're telling me at least $125m. I was thinking more like $80m and along those lines.

Any predictions?

If it makes that much money ($125m) or more on its opening weekend (in the US) I will change my SHH avatar to that of a flying pig for an entire year.

Mark the date. :cmad:

More of a miscalculation than ignorance. Thought it would open well, but didn't think it would be that big. In fact I'm doubtful any amongst us thought it would come close to a $150m opening.

in the name of the SHH god. 150 millions.

so i guess more movies about books and less original movies? what can you do.

At least it's a film worthy of such an opening. And not a pair of 3D glasses in sight. Restores my faith somewhat.

When you hear all that pre-talk about sold out tickets and ****, never bet against that horse.

Will the Avengers make even more opening weekend?

Maybe, and it's a relative novelty to see different superheroes teaming up together. But Disney has been marketing it well, unlike their JC fiasco.

And even if it drops off big for the next few weekends, The Hunger Games will certainly cross the $300M mark domestically. You'd have to look back to 2001 when another best-selling novel non-sequel did that (the first HP film). But considering it's holding better than any of the Twilight films (big crossover appeal), maybe a $400M final tally?

Hunger games has a good chance of being the strongest opening this year. A really good chance.

Box Office Shocker: 'Hunger Games' Third Best Opening Weekend of All Time
8:20 AM PDT 3/25/2012 by Pamela McClintock

Lionsgate's book-to-film adaptation grosses a staggering $155 million, shattering records and surpassing any "Twilight" pic.

Making history, Lionsgate's The Hunger Games opened to an astounding $155 million at the domestic box office, the third-best debut of all time and the best for any film opening outside of summer.

Hunger Games -- the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' best-selling young-adult novel starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth -- also reeled in the biggest opening for a nonsequel.

The Gary Ross-directed tentpole came in not far behind the $158.4 million earned by The Dark Knight in its July 2008 debut. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 holds the record for best debut with $169.2 million in summer 2011.

Among the films that Hunger Games beat in its debut were Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million in 2007), The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($142.8 million in 2009) and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 ($138.1 million last year).

Hunger Games drew an A CinemaScore overall on Friday night, with those under the age of 25 giving it a glowing A+ and those over 25 an A-. Tweens and teens turned out in force for the film, with 39 percent of the audience younger than 18, according to CinemaScore exit polling.

Part of the movie's strength is that it is appealing to males as well as females, unlike the femme-heavy Twilight franchise, another blockbuster film property based on a young-adult book series. Males made up 39 percent of Hunger Games' Friday night audience.

"The numbers just kept growing and growing. And based on the trajectory of the weekend, we are going to have an unbelievable hold. We are going to play and play," Lionsgate executive vice president of distribution David Spitz said. "I think that when we initially looked at this property, we thought we were going to have Twilight numbers in terms of females, but we didn't."

Hunger Games also played like a family film, evidenced by its strong Friday to Saturday hold. The film fell a narrow 25 percent, while the Twilight and Harry Potter films fall anywhere from 44 percent to 60 percent.

According to CinemaScore, 49 percent of those showing up to see Hunger Games were under the age of 25; Lionsgate's exit polling showed that 44 percent were under the age of 25.

Haven't seen it (probably won't) but congrats to Jennifer Lawrence for becoming a bonafide movie star. Ever since Winter's Bone she seemed destined for this.

$155 million? Insane. I mean, it's about twice as much as the early predictions I saw one or two months ago. A $200 million opening weekend can't really be far away now... I don't dare guess how much The Dark Knight Rises will gross, especially if the reviews for that movie comes anywhere near those for TDK.

My girlfriend and I will be giving our contributions to the film today.

International Box Office: 'Hunger Games' Dominates With $59.25 Million

on March 25, 2012
The Hunger Games: $59.25 million from 7,700 locations in 69 markets.

This means the opening weekend worldwide is on level with those for Transformers 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

I wouldn't say that, it was good but you really felt the low budget of the film, it wasn't a grand scale film as the marketing made it seem to be. The sequel definitely sounds like it will live up to the hype with what they have in store and perhaps they'll pump some more money into the film. I just left the film feeling satisfied but still wanting more in terms of a better plot, a hint of what's to come or just a bigger film. It felt like this could've been a low budget Disney film from the 1990s.

Will the Avengers make even more opening weekend?

Since Avengers is essentially the third film to feature Iron Man and IM2 did $128M and Hulk/Thor/Captain America did low $60s and Transformers never had giant openings (as comparison for invasion films) I'll say $135-140M, which is still great but I don't see it going $155 or higher. There will be more 3D and IMAX 3D screenings so maybe it could but based on the films leading up to this and what the trailers have shown I can't see it attracting a new audience, it may have legs and earn the most but as an opener I couldn't see it reaching $150M+.

No...Avengers won't best this opening weekend. The only movie that has a shot at that is TDKR and that will be a close one.

Going to see Hunger Games in about an hour.

I think The Hobbit will match it, at the very least.

to be honest everyone was predicting 75 to 80 opening weekend which would have been huge considering its 80mill budget! but these numbers are staggering 155mill.
