Ah, I see StarWars got banned. Good riddance.
Anyway, am I the only one who isn't all "OMG I WANT TO SEE THE LOOK ON ROGER GOODELL'S FACE IF HE HAS TO HAND TOM BRADY THE LOMBARDI TROPHY"? I swear I'm liable to punch the next person who says that to me.
I mean, perhaps there is some genuine animosity between Brady and Goodell, but if Goodell has proven one thing over the years, it's that he's impervious to public embarrassment. The fact that he survived the whole domestic violence debacle (and is STILL f***ing it up amazingly... just look at the Josh Brown situation this year) meant that he's pretty much guaranteed a job for life as long as the rich AF owners of the NFL teams keep raking in cash. Perhaps the loss of revenue from bad ratings this year will do him in, but I doubt it; the NFL will almost always be profitable. So the idea that having to hand Brady a trophy would cause Goodell any true public shame is a farce.
Furthermore -- and this is just me putting together my own conspiracy theory here, but bear with me on this -- I'm not so sure this whole Deflategate suspension wasn't just a carefully constructed charade to redeem the Patriots in everyone's eyes. If you think about it, look at how much the sports media loves "redemption" stories that aren't actually redemption stories at all. You see it with Jamies Winston. You saw it with Roethlisberger and Michael Vick (though at least in the case of the latter, he actually did serve time). But in the case of these other guys, they were accused of horrible things, and regardless of whether they were guilty or not, they "redeemed" themselves by... playing well and leading their teams. Umm... what? Does that make sense? If these guys actually did rape women and get away with it, how does putting up impressive statistics and winning games fix that? Yet the media goes along with it, praising the "maturity" of these guys.
Now take the Patriots, a team that has had incredible success over the past decade and a half but has also been mired in controversy due to
dubious practices that go well beyond Spygate and Deflategate. And sure, it's easy to argue that Brady and Belichick would have won all of those games that they did even if they hadn't done a bunch of shady things, but they still did them anyway, and the other NFL owners were pissed. And fans (of other teams at least) once again had some fuel for their argument that the Patriots can't win a Super Bowl without bending the rules in some way.
So how could Kraft, Brady and Belichick reinforce the idea that "the Patriot Way" is a real thing and not just a line of bullsh** (DURR YOU'LL NEVER SEE ANYBODY ON THE PATRIOTS POSTING FACEBOOK LIVE VIDEOS OR PARTYING WITH JUSTIN BIEBER BUT YOU MIGHT SEE A TIGHT END KILL A COUPLE GUYS OR ANOTHER TIGHT END MAKING DEEZ NUTS JOKES BUT THAT'S OKAY BECAUSE THE PATRIOT WAY DURR). How could they concoct another "revenge tour" for the Patriots (in which the Patriots take "revenge" on the rest of the league for being pissed off that THEY cheated)? By making Goodell the bad guy.
Think about it. Goodell is reviled by fans of all teams alike. At some point, a player on your favorite team probably got suspended or fined by him. Or you probably (hopefully) thought he was an asshat for how he handled the Ray Rice situation, only suspending him for two games until a much more graphic video had to be produced (which he likely had already seen). Or you despised him for being nothing more than a puppet for the owners who doesn't know or care much about the players or the game of football at all. I think it was very, VERY telling that during the 2015 NFL Draft, he couldn't pronounce Marcus Mariota's name. This was a guy projected to go first or second overall, and the NFL media had been talking about him for months. Everyone knew his name. Except of course, Roger Goodell. Why? Because all he cares about are revenues. He doesn't care about football or the players.
So why not cast him as the villain in all of this? It appeases the owners, because they see justice done with Brady being suspended. It appeases the fans, because they have someone to hate other than the Patriots (because remember, they're the REAL victims here). Maybe Brady himself is pissed, but he probably knows that his team is good enough that they'll likely make the post-season even with him sitting for four games. And they of course did.
So like I said, I have no proof of this, but it all feels like a charade to me to make the Patriots the "good guys" again. Suddenly, no one hates them anymore; all the hatred is directed towards Goodell, and everyone already hated him anyway.
