Hey man, I had a question.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but back when it was released, I think you were going around saying that you'd wished TASM2 would have ended after the funeral scene, leaving Peter's coming to terms with Gwen's death and donning the mask again for the third film instead of added on to the end of this film. Well now, if the deal goes through and the TASM universe is no more, do you still agree? Or seeing as that could be the end of it all, do you like that the last thing we saw in the franchise was him coming to his senses and becoming Spider-Man again rather than ending the whole franchise with him grieving over Gwen?
That's a very good question.
I'll have to repeat myself to answer your question (throwing that out there for those who are aware of my opinion on this already).
The thing about TASM2 that left a bad taste in my mouth was this constant feeling of it being fast forwarded and just not settling down to tell a solid story. As soon as Peter finds out why Richard left, we move on to Gwen leaving and the bridge scene. His revelation about his parents had no impact on the story. Then, right after Gwen dies, they fast forward five months to set up the S6, leaving no room for Gwen's death to actually be felt. Why fast forward time? Why not take advantage of the opportunity to show Peter during that difficult time? Why fast forward and have to explain it later?
The problem is, Gwen's death, the grave scenes, and the Rhino fight happen all in a span of five minutes. There's absolutely no impact of the aftermath of her death. Why not show the questioning of the public, the Stacy's, the immediate reaction? Instead, they divert our attention with one of the phoniest examples of a villain I've ever seen in a film. I'll admit that I would have accepted it if they pursued another route, but the pathetic nature of Rhino to end the film just made it so miserably hard to swallow, and took away from the events that happened immediately before that.
As I've stated before, even if they wanted to show Peter's comeback, the perfect ending would have been him sitting down and listening to Gwen's speech and staring down to his mask. They could have had him look out the window and then show citizens of New York panicking on the streets, looking out of the glass windows of coffee shops, etc. Then, they could have shown Peter as Spidey running across rooftops, swinging between tight alleys, and ending on a slow motion shot the way they did with TASM1. Anything without Rhino would have been okay.
If the deal goes through, I would have preferred something to happen along the lines of what I stated above. If the deal doesn't work out, I wish they had the funeral scene ending that I mentioned after the movie's release, because it at least leaves some questions desired to be answered. However, at this point (where we are with current Spidey affairs), none of it makes a difference to me. I try my best to enjoy the movie for the few scenes that were good (honestly, though, I haven't even cared to watch it in a few months). Otherwise, story-wise and in terms of continuity in a sequel, there's no attachment on my part as a fan. At the end of the day, why should I care if the studio releasing these films doesn't seem to? It's a money-mill for them - one which I no longer plan on contributing to.
