First thing you have to ask yourself is, what does Halo have, to make it so special as to have a killer?
That one's easy. It has Microsoft backing it financially.
Halo was a first time game, a new IP that sold 5M units.
No FPS as made that, sold that much the first time around.
And then proceeded to sit on its laurels for two games in a row.
Then it was extremly story driven, and a great storyline too, it was much like a movie.
Even people that like Halo recognize that the story is absolute ****e.
Not many FPS can say that, most are about killing the bad guy, and to do that, you have to go across a lot of levels just to get to point A to point B.
As opposed to Halo, where you need to kill a bad guy/blow up a space station and to do that, you have to... oh wait. Well at least the Spartans look cool and orig...

Mother-****!
Then, it´s the Xbox´s golden child....
It is, and that's sad considering how many better games have come to both the XBox and the 360. So many games deserve the money that Microsoft puts into marketing Halo so much more. But at the end of the day the Halo name sells systems well so it gets the bread. That's fine, but it doesn't make the game good.
As quality and story goes, i said it once and say it again, there will be a Halo killer sooner or later
There has been time and time over. Hell Half-Life was a better story before Halo ever even came out. But just to list off a few off the top of my head.
Bioshock
Portal
Half-Life 2
Hell I'll take Gears of War's story, which is pretty much the same as Halo, over Halo's any day of the week because at least that character has the inklings of an interesting back story instead of being a generic badass in a robot suit with the misnomer of master tagged in front of his frat boy nickname of chief.
as sales go, there will be too, but not this generation.
Not unless another studio gets the kind of budget that can put your face on every Big Gulp in every 7/11 in America, no there won't be.
And since you didn't mention it, I will. Halo has been surpassed as an FPS and Online FPS continually now. CoD4 and Team Fortress 2 are both much more solidly designed. Both of them facilitate teamwork through their gameplay with a ****-ton more grace than Halo, and both are just far more fun to play.
But Halo will always be Halo, and Halo is an universe, spawning a series of games with other genres (RTS, and the upcoming Peter Jackson´s which will not be an FPS).
All of which conjure the image of either a frat boy looking to forget about how small his dick is or an overweight balding fifty year old Star Trek nerd trying to forget about how he wasted his life.
The other game i see going that way is Gears of War.
Not surprising.
In that department, in creating universes, Microsoft is way better than Sony
And Square and Blizzard do it better than either of them. What's your point?
