3 Halo Killers in 08?

Well, it's a good thing you arent in charge of a video game company though, because sales are the only thing that matter, not quality. If CoD4 had the worst sale of all FPS games this year, even if it was the highest quality game, it wouldnt be a Halo killer. Halo KILLER. See the emphasis there? As is, CoD4 was at the very least a Halo stunner, but if it had no sales, then it wouldnt have been that even, cause no one would be f**king playing it.

It was an exaggeration, even if CoD4 didn't sell a whole lot like it did, if it was less, it wouldn't take anything away from the quality of the game. If you buy a game because it's the best seller of all time, well, that's your prerogative. I don't base my choices of what games to buy according to how well they sell. There are always going to be people playing FPS's, regardless of how it sells and no matter how good or bad they actually are. There's a community for every single game, no matter how big or small.

I'm not speaking as a video game company CEO, I'm speaking as someone who plays video games.

The thing that Halo 3 had was hype and that was the most hyped game of the entire year. CoD4 didnt get nearly as much attention, buzz and advertisement pre-release and it did fairly well without all that. It probably would have seemed like more of a Halo killer had it had more of that.

Where do you live where there was no hype or buzz about CoD4? I live in Sioux Falls, and there was so much hype around the game that it was actually delievered to the Best Buy in our town by a military humvee, and they had a big display of it running from the back of the same vehicle.

Wow, I've never heard of anything like that happening around where I live.

unless either stereoscopic 3D monitors are made or virtual reality catches on, i don't think there will be a Halo-KILLER.....but FPS's are evolving so fast that by the end of this gen, Halo 3 will seem like GoldenEye.

COD4 didnt get nearly as much as Halo. Thats what Im trying to say. And I guess I wasn paying much attention to the game, but I didnt see much before its release, at least it wasnt so in my face like with Halo 3

First thing you have to ask yourself is, what does Halo have, to make it so special as to have a killer?
Halo was a first time game, a new IP that sold 5M units.
No FPS as made that, sold that much the first time around.
Then it was extremly story driven, and a great storyline too, it was much like a movie.
Not many FPS can say that, most are about killing the bad guy, and to do that, you have to go across a lot of levels just to get to point A to point B.
Then, it´s the Xbox´s golden child....

As quality and story goes, i said it once and say it again, there will be a Halo killer sooner or later; as sales go, there will be too, but not this generation.
But Halo will always be Halo, and Halo is an universe, spawning a series of games with other genres (RTS, and the upcoming Peter Jackson´s which will not be an FPS).
The other game i see going that way is Gears of War.

In that department, in creating universes, Microsoft is way better than Sony

Right-o. One can even go as far as saying that Halo almost singlehandedly saved the original Xbox from becoming yet another 3DO or Jaguarr. If you remember, the launch of the original Xbox was met with much scorn and skepticism, but it wasn't until people saw the critical acclaim and sales of Halo did it manage to win any converts. Not to mention that at the time, Halo was responsible for many FPS innovations as well as popularizing console shooters to the degree that we see today. And lest we forget, Halo essentially created what is pretty much the blueprint for console FPSs.

So let's face the facts, chumps: there will probably NEVER be a Halo killer. Sure, at most you'll be able to argue so-and-so game is better than Halo, but I dare anyone to bring me a shooter (aside from Half-Life maybe) with a similarly spectacular list of accomplishments as Halo's.

well...i don't understand why the term "Halo Killer" came about in the first place. it's not as if there were ever any "killers" in the gaming world until that one magazine toted Killzone as the Halo Killer. there was never any Street Fighter Killer, Mario Killer, or Metal Gear Killer. the term "Halo Killer" is just stupid to me...

OK WHY MUST WE ALWAYS COMPARE BIG FPS TITLES TO HALO OR DUB THEM "HALO KILLERS" errrrrrrrr this reallly pisses me off. Halo isnt that great compaired to a fps IMO like Crysis, Fear, Half Life, Condemned, Resistance and finally Call of Duty 4. Yes it's made *huge* dough for microsoft but that doesnt mean squat. I've played some of the best titles under 20 bucks that no one has heard of and they are never seen again. One of these was Breakdown. Had HUGE potential but no one bought it. It was amazing compaired to the standard games at the time. The gameplay in Halo is ok the controls are what makes the game huge cause it's fun and easy to play but my god does the multiplayer suck. The people on there are unbearable and is overun with a bunch of kids and teens who's current vocabulary consists of swearing and the word gay and/or any sexual references. So please stop compairing new FPS games to Halo. Damn. lol. None of those games have anything to do with it IMO. It's as annoying as the whole who's better Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger. XD

Splinter Cell is supposed to be the "Metal Gear killer"

Killzone 2 will be overrated just like Killzone 1.

yea and IDK why but I found Killzone to be difficult to play for some odd reason. lol I wonder if anyone else had this problem....

Splinter Cell is supposed to be the "Metal Gear killer"
it was supposed to be, but that particular term (Metal Gear Killer) never caught on like Halo Killer. it was supposed to give Metal Gear a run for it's money but it was never given the nickname "Metal Gear Killer".

Killzone 2 will be overrated just like Killzone 1.
if Killzone actually was a Halo killer then maybe you'd have a point, but Killzone 1 was just overhyped. it was never overrated...

What blood Halo didn't already spill from it's own wrists with that pile of crap that was Halo 3, CoD4 blew away from its head.

If we're talking "Halo Killer" in terms of marketing, sales, hype, and media coverage, there wont be a game as big for years to come. Only GTA will rival Halo 3's sales in my eyes, and thats with it being released as a multi-platform game.

In terms of Halo-Killer as a game, Halo 3 was an average shooter in my eyes. Graphically it should've been better, and gameplay wise added nothing new. It was a good game, set in a interesting universe of aliens and characters, and ended the series well, but there's better FPS.
Halo 3 has a great online package though, and has some good features....Plus an excellent musical score. But when push comes to shove, it should've been better, and needed a new gameplay "wow" feature. Like when I play CoD4, and I'm in some serious battle, with explosions, great AI, i say "wow". When I played Orange Box, and found myself in like a sci-fi movie, it made me say "wow".
If Halo 3 was packaged without the Halo brand, it wouldnt of been praised as much. Anyways, enough Halo bashing, Halo 3 was still a great game for us 360 users.

Orange Box, is still the best FPS package for me as far as single player goes, though CoD4 is amazing....If only it was longer.

Exactly....Halo 3 was released and marketed like a Hollywood blockbuster. Over here in England, there were sooo many adverts on prime-time (especially sporting events), had news features all over the place, had public marketing events....It was crazy.

Halo 3 could've been reeeeeeally ****, and still would've sold loads. Most casual gamers dont even check out reviews prior to buying a game. I'm always telling my friends what, and what NOT to buy, because they havent got a clue. They pick up the box in a game shop, and if they like the art and pictures on the back, they'd buy it!!! Ha

That one's easy. It has Microsoft backing it financially.

Halo was a first time game, a new IP that sold 5M units.
No FPS as made that, sold that much the first time around.

And then proceeded to sit on its laurels for two games in a row.

Then it was extremly story driven, and a great storyline too, it was much like a movie.

Even people that like Halo recognize that the story is absolute ****e.

Not many FPS can say that, most are about killing the bad guy, and to do that, you have to go across a lot of levels just to get to point A to point B.

As opposed to Halo, where you need to kill a bad guy/blow up a space station and to do that, you have to... oh wait. Well at least the Spartans look cool and orig...

Mother-****!

Then, it´s the Xbox´s golden child....

It is, and that's sad considering how many better games have come to both the XBox and the 360. So many games deserve the money that Microsoft puts into marketing Halo so much more. But at the end of the day the Halo name sells systems well so it gets the bread. That's fine, but it doesn't make the game good.

As quality and story goes, i said it once and say it again, there will be a Halo killer sooner or later

There has been time and time over. Hell Half-Life was a better story before Halo ever even came out. But just to list off a few off the top of my head.

Bioshock
Portal
Half-Life 2

Hell I'll take Gears of War's story, which is pretty much the same as Halo, over Halo's any day of the week because at least that character has the inklings of an interesting back story instead of being a generic badass in a robot suit with the misnomer of master tagged in front of his frat boy nickname of chief.:o

as sales go, there will be too, but not this generation.

Not unless another studio gets the kind of budget that can put your face on every Big Gulp in every 7/11 in America, no there won't be.

And since you didn't mention it, I will. Halo has been surpassed as an FPS and Online FPS continually now. CoD4 and Team Fortress 2 are both much more solidly designed. Both of them facilitate teamwork through their gameplay with a ****-ton more grace than Halo, and both are just far more fun to play.

But Halo will always be Halo, and Halo is an universe, spawning a series of games with other genres (RTS, and the upcoming Peter Jackson´s which will not be an FPS).

All of which conjure the image of either a frat boy looking to forget about how small his dick is or an overweight balding fifty year old Star Trek nerd trying to forget about how he wasted his life.

The other game i see going that way is Gears of War.

Not surprising.

In that department, in creating universes, Microsoft is way better than Sony

And Square and Blizzard do it better than either of them. What's your point?

You're right to an extent, but don't kid yourself as to thinking the ONLY reason Halo has been so successful is because of its marketing. Its a solid FPS thats easy to pick up and play. Its one of the reasons why you come across so many pre-pubescent little kids shouting obscenities into the mic. It also has a MUCH better party system than many of the FPS out today(yes, its even better than the beloved CoD4).Im by no means a Halo fan, i prefer more realisitc shooters, ie Rainbow Six and Call of Duty, but if you are a fan of shooters and feel Halo is anything less than a great total package, then youre just kidding yourself.

Actually, I think what you said about it being so easy to pick up and play is where a lot of the love/hate comes from. The game is so user friendly that most of the time it feel tedious to me. I mean, I get my ass handed to me in every CoD4 match I go on, but when I do get a kill I feel as though I have accomplished something. When I play Halo I'm just pointing in a general direction and holding down on the trigger because that is literally all you have to do with most of the weapons it offers and you will get rampages.

Dude, i agree completely, but my argument was just pointing to a reason as to why Halo is so popular. It caters to a larger audience than many of the shooters out today.
