$400 PS3 with Spider-man 3 BR RUMOR

The USB ports would be like a couple bucks at best, maybe 5-10? I still say they should gut WiFi, I wouldn't be surprised if the 40gig hard drive was a slower RPM then the 80 gig model like the 20 gig was to the 60 gig.

2 less USB ports isn't the end of the world, but I can't imagine low-end consumers, who this model is aimed at, caring more about Wifi than B/C. We'll have to see if the no-B/C rumors are true, but I personally can't believe that they would be. That's one of PS3's big selling points that's supposed to bridge it to current PS2 users.

Yeah, but if you are a current PS2 user, does it really matter since you already have a PS2? I think the price and the Bluray functionality out weighs no BC. IMO

Yeah, but there are those who don't have a PS2 or would like to just have an all in one unit. I would have started saving up the cash now for a PS3 at 400 bucks if it had BC...and even 400 bucks is still steep for a game console.

I see what your saying, but there are 100 million PS2 owners already. Maybe Sony is targeting them. We really won't know until we "official word" and not speculations and assumptions.

I just thought of something-- if the 40GB has only two USB ports, but it does have WiFi, Sony could argue that the 360's third USB port is for the Wifi adapter, which you do not need on PS3 since WiFi is built in.

okay this is getting ridiculous. Sony should not add a 3rd model into the mix. 1 is really all that is needed and 2 is pushing it. The only way this would work is if the 120 is replacing hte 80gb.

New PLAYSTATION®3 Model to Take Holiday Season by Storm

Aggressively priced hardware and a terrific software line-up make for an unbeatable combination
New 40GB PS3 at €399 60 drops to €499

London, 5 October 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced details of its exciting new PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) model that will launch throughout the SCEE territories on 10th October 2007 at the highly attractive price of €399.

Providing an incredibly appealing entry point to the world of High Definition gaming and entertainment for the holiday season, the new PS3 brings the next generation of interactive home entertainment to homes all across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia.

Along with an ever expanding line-up of PS3 titles (a total of 65 titles tracking across all genres by Christmas), the new PS3 is equipped with a 40GB HDD and includes all the features central to the High Definition entertainment experience; true next generation gameplay, stunning High Definition Blu-ray Disc™ movies, SIXAXIS™ wireless controller, Wi-Fi and HDMI connectivity, all powered by the Cell Broadband Engine™, the digital heart of PS3.

As with the 60GB PS3, the new PS3 features upgradeable firmware allowing new features and functionality to be added to the system as time progresses. A recent firmware update, for example, enabled PS3 to upscale DVD’s played on the system to full 1080P High Definition.

The introduction of the new PS3 has been determined following user feedback from thousands of existing PS3 owners as well as research into future potential PS3 owners. The new model features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer includes the multi memory card port.

The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas).

The existing Starter Pack*, comprising a 60GB PS3 with extensive backwards compatibility, an additional SIXAXIS wireless controller and two first party titles will be reduced in price to €499. Remaining on sale while stocks last, the 60GB model represents outstanding value for the keen gamer wishing to upgrade to the High Definition capabilities of PS3.

“The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next generation of PS3 owners,” said David Reeves, President of SCEE. “It has allowed us to deliver an extremely advanced, yet incredibly affordable High Definition gaming and entertainment system, configured to the needs of the next generation of European PS3 owners. PS3 has always been the device of choice for the discerning gamer and entertainment seeker, and the new PS3 is more than ever the perfect High Definition entertainment system.

*In the UK and Ireland, the Starter Pack will be replaced by a separate in-store promotion on the 60GB PS3.

I can't believe Sony thinks that people care more about that dumb silver strip than they do about backwards compatability. :(

I am 99% positive that the 40GB has enough hardware power to emulate PS2 games, but Sony took it out anyway to make the 80GB seem more like a premium product. I hope they re-think this descision, because it's a very bad one IMO. They can add the feature back with a firware update in the future, but the question is, will they want to if it means cutting into the 80GB version's sales?

And what's more annoying, is that it's still PS1 backwards-compatible, even though PS2 emulation is disabled. What the crap is up with that?

You know, I don't understand why Sony can't enable DTS HD Master Audio. I mean, it has the processing power. This coupled with the no BC is really annoying. A better price but they take away/don't enable important features. Eh, definitely pass, but I'm sure it will sell a bit better than the 500 dollar unit.

theres no more PS2 emulation bc Sony removed the Graphics Synthesizer chip. This was done to reduce the cost of production which in turn helps to reduce the cost to consumers. They had to take something out and a smaller hard drive and less USB ports wasnt going to make that big of a difference. The 80gb is the "main" model. It has all the features and thats the one the hardcore gamer will aim at. The 40gb is the budget one for those who want to start PS3 gaming but thought it was too expensive to buy a system until now.

If people want the play PS2 games with their system, then they are free to buy the other model. I dont see losing BC as that big of a deal. Its a great feature to have but if you are going to buy a PS3, chances are your primary focus is to use it for PS3 gaming.

Good point. With 100 million PS'2 already in homes, the chances are good that you already have one when you buy a PS3 anyway. Not to mention, you are also buying one of the, if not the best Bluray players on the market. It is a great value for Europe.

Well, I guess chances are if you are getting a PS3 you probably already own a PS2, and if not, rumors have it that the PS2 will be dropping to 99 dollars pretty soon... so you can have your choice between buying a PS2 and buying the 399 PS3, or spending the same amount of money and getting the 80 gig PS3. Honestly though, I think just getting the price down is more important at this stage then if the 40 gig supports BC.

Good news for people who don't have the consoles already...

yea but I dont want to be switching system to play PS games! It should all work in one system!!!

Personalkly being able to select 'eject disc' on the PS3 has made me very resentful of the fact taht I still have to get up and take it out, and then put it in a case. I'm holding for being able to levitate the discs using the Six axis controlelr and placing them in their cases without having the leave my chair. :csad:

maybe Sony can add that with the PS4...hehe

Chances are we will see it before christmas then, I have to admit I didn't think we'd see it until march.

The red thing is the GS, the 'gpu' of the PS2. Removing won't only save them like 25 bucks or whatever, it will allow them to simplify the motherboard and make it cheaper to produce.
