Good observations there, Pat!

The episode had its share of plot holes, but I liked it.

What were they? I didnt notice any over the top obvious ones, sometimes it takes me 3 or 4 viewings to notice things like that.

Did you notice something? After all that speculation about what the information was in the envelope, there was NO envelope!

Using the word envelope was a bit misguiding as it made us think he had something specific particularly as it was supposed to harm Clark and Martha as well. I had to rewatch that part a couple of times before I realised that there was no actual evidence but he was to go and find some evidence.

Maybe they changed it from the script to make it more of an ongoing story.

One of the greatest things here was the actual art of storytelling..

1. A ''real'' life story part - Clark and Lana & co. spending their first holiday thingy..
2. An ''unreal'' Lex dream stuff part..
3. Interpolating/mixing these 2 to the point of making it 1 ''whole'', a sum bigger then parts..
And of course:
4. Adding a bit of ''magic'' (santa) to the first - ''real'' part - making the total mix truly amazing..

Is word genious appropriate? :)

 :)

I didnt mind the Santa being real. Most Christmas movies, TV shows leave you wondering if the Santa Claus is real.

It kind of reminded me of Miracle on 34th Street. We know how much Smallville loves to pay homages.

I think...

This was probably one of the best Christmas episodes of any show ever.

And hey, if witches can exist in Smallville, so can (Kryptonite Mutant?) Santa. Maybe he's Clark's neighbor at the Fortress of Solitude.

Here are a few I posted at another site, avid:

Exactly how many Dr. Scanlans are there at Smallville Medical Center? That was also the name of the African-American doctor who operated on Jonathan in season 3! (Someone reminded me later that "Lexmas's" Dr. Scanlan had also appeared on the show before as a doctor. So apparently SMC has the surgical team of Scanlan & Scanlan. :) )

Also, why couldn't the hospital have airlifted Lana to Metropolis? Hospitals do that all the time. I seem to remember it from "Resurrection," in fact.

And why couldn't Lex have gone to Jonathan instead of Lionel for help -- he's been state senator for seven years, he's gotta be pretty well off by now. And dream Lex and Lana are certainly no poorer than the Kents are in real life -- but the Kents have managed to afford a triple bypass, heart medicine, multiple other hospital bills, and dozens of truck repairs, and Lex can't afford one airlift?

Finally, there is NO WAY a book gets greenlighted in December and published in January, in any universe!

He has been on the show alot of times. He was Dr. Jaeger (sp?) in the episode Resurrection. In Scare, Lex called him Dr. Scanlan, so I guess he changed his name, by Deed Poll. ;)

I thought Lex wanted to use the Jet, not just the helicopter.

Well even though in the dream Lex had a great relationship with Jonathan he probably isnt used to going to him to ask for help.

I dont think it was so much about the airlift but getting her into the right hospital, The Davis Clinic where all the top specialists are.

Maybe, but when your wife's dying, I don't think you'd let "I'm not used to it" stand in your way. If I had a father with lots of money who hated me, and a friend with lots of money whom I'd never asked for help but who cared about me, I know whom I'd go to first.

I think there's someone who works on the show who's named Scanlan -- a producer or something. I remember seeing the name in the credits. Maybe he likes having doctors named after him. :D

But you would probably turn to the person whom your more accustomed to turning to.

That would be Tim Scanlan. I think he's been on the show since the beginning.

To all who question the dream sequence, how would we tie in all the aspects if they didn't present them the way they did? How would Lex know or actually come to the realization about money and power if Lionel didn't give him that speech? Too much reality is place on a show meant to take you away for an hour. Just enjoy it for what it is, if you question it, you won't really enjoy it to its fullest. Also, so what Santa Claus was in the episode, it's a show about an alien with superhuman powers, it's a fantasy and it is christmas show. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

I didn't say I didn't like it. I liked it quite a lot. I just said it had plot holes. You need your wife's life saved, you go to the person who's most likely to help you save it, instead of to the person who hates your guts. Simple as that.

Merry Christmas to you too! :)

Lex not being able to save Lana was a metaphor of how powerless he was, it's not supposed to be realistic.

There are tons of other things he could have done, probably, to help Lana.

However, to be forced to go to the most powerful man he knows and beg for help was powerful drama and cemented the idea that he is as powerless as Lionel is powerful. It helped to drive his actions at the end as well... He hated not having control.

I agree with those but you have to take into account that those were all in Lex's dream, outside of the Chloe book thing which was sort of a throw away line and I doubt Lex would know how things work anyway, they were all just setup in his mind to happen that way, so he'd have to confront the power/control vs. love/powerlessness choice. In some of my dreams I can fly, in others I fall out my office window, you'd think I'd have some consistency in them but I'm more or less just forced to go with them :D

I liked since this was a elseworlds story kinda thing ,a dream, they could do cool things with the lights. I liked the lighting in this so much ecspecially the lighting in Lionels office truly ingenious.

Did anyone else think Chloe looked really quite spectactular in the dream. I think she looked amazing. Best i have ever seen her look.

I think sometimes they need to do certain things even if they don't make immediate sense in the real world to make more of an impact story wise. If Lex had gone to Jonathan instead, we wouldn't have had that scene with Lex and his father, which was a very important scene. I wouldn't call that a plot hole, more like poetic license

Exactly! You just have to go with it sometimes for the sake of the story.

I listened to the commentary of Apollo 13 with Jim and Pat Lovell, and I cant tell you how many times he said "well that actually didnt happen that way, they've taken some artistic licence with that one". And here we are talking about non-fiction.

Its something that happens in all storytelling. The logical and realistic choice isnt always the dramatic choice.

Did you get your review into Justin yet? Craig said he wouldn't post mine until probably later, maybe even not until tomorrow...

Hey Gina, I wasn't coming down on you or anything, I just thought that I would give you my opinion as to why the whole Lex going to Lionel scene happened. I thought it was the most intricate part of the dream. I just want everyone to enjoy the show as much as I do, which i'm sure you do. Suspend all common sense is my theory and just enjoy! I'm sorry if you think I singled you out, that was not my intention.

^^ Well not all common sense, but you guys know what I mean, I try not to over analyze things.

Overall I wasn't impressed with Merry Lexmas, sure they were building up with Lex and all, but I think everybody knows how much Lex secretely loves Lana and it doesn't need to be explored in a what if? type of storyline. And the whole thing with Santa and all didn't do it for me, other than running really fast to deliver present's and saving Santa from falling Clark didn't use his powers...

I think this episode is my least favorite so far this season, but overall this has been the best season of Smallville, and there are going to be a few clunkers along the way...

You're cool ATC. :)

Have a great weekend Avid, you too Gina, work is finally done. Great job, get paid to talk with my SHH buddies.

Damn! I don't know how I missed this episode; guess I'll have to catch it on DVD.

Take care,
