Great cover. The black costume/symbiote always looked awesome to me. It's got a minimalistic simplicity to it that works surprisingly well with Spider-Man.
I also love the Peter/Mary Jane relationship. I miss the days when they were married.

I don't know. The retcon, the mindwipe, et cetera really undermined a lot of what I found appealing about Spider-Man. Now Spider-Man's marriage apparently never actually happened, Venom can't even know Spider-Man's secret identity when he's supposed to be a massive threat because of his intimate knowledge of him, his arch-rivalry with Norman Osborn is no more, et cetera.

Those are changes that I've had to get used to, but there's something about ASM these days that just clicks. I mean, will I always wish that them arriage would ahve continued? Absoloutely, but these days ASM is just as enjoyable as it was during JMS/JRJR's run, if you ask me.

People say that the 90s were chock full of bad ideas (the Spider-Man you've been reading about since ASM # 150 in November 1975 was a fake all along), but the 80s had some pretty bad ideas as well, like Black Cat's costume here. Thank god that was forgotten about.

Cat's costume in that story bugged the hell out of me, but overall, the 80's era of Spidey was great. The 80's brought the Symbiote saga, the famous Roger Stern Hobgoblin arc, Nothing Can Stop The Juggernaut, the marriage of Peter & MJ in ASm annual #21, etc.

True. Those were awesome stories. The symbiote/black costume is my favorite alternate costume of Peter's (so not counting Ben's Spider-Man or Scarlet Spider costumes).
