82nd Annual Academy Awards

Various Oscar thoughts:

-As expected, I like Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin a lot as hosts.
-Ben Stiller and Tyler Perry were the most entertaining presenters.
-Jeff Bridges gave the most entertaining acceptance speech.
-The only win that surprised me was Precious beating Up in the Air for Adapted Screenplay. I haven't seen Precious, but it's going to be hard pressed to top Up in the Air in my mind.
-As good as The Hurt Locker is, I think Inglourious Basterds was a bit better. I would at least have given it Original Screenplay.
-Fantastic Mr. Fox should have won Animated Feature over Up. Up is a worthy winner and Pixar is terrific, but Fantastic Mr. Fox stood out to me more.
-I liked how they explained some of the technical categories.
-But I couldn't help myself from thinking they must have wanted to make a point by using The Dark Knight as an example.
-The tribute to the horror genre was a nice gesture, but some of the movies in the montage didn't help the genre's case. Even if the Oscars were retroactively more open to horror, I doubt many of the movies shown would be good enough to get any nominations.
-I was shocked that Michael Jackson wasn't the last person shown on the In Memoriam montage.

Did anyone laugh out loud when they randomly decided to put 2 seconds of footage from Twilight: New Moon in the Horror montage?

Glad at the outcome of this show, but im thinking that Cinematography should have gone to HBP, how is CGI cinematography?

a great shot is a great shot, its totally irrelavent how that shot is created. the cinematography was frigging amazing in avata. a totally deserve awad.

HP had tons of CGI in scenes where you would not think that its CGI.

i dont care if Avatar won cinematography.

What was the point of the Horror tribute? Because not enough young people watched the Oscars last years so that put that in to make them stay glued instead of texting? How did Avatar win best cinematography, there was hardly any real cameras used, it was mostly 0 and 1's/pixels. Ben Stiller has to be somebody big in Hollywood to be part of the show every year, or mommy and daddy are in charge of everything, and sonny gets to do his lame shtick every year. What's with the music, when Charlize Theron came out on stage the E.T. theme played, they probably thought she was Drew Barrymore. There was a moment where they played the Avatar music on the exit of another movie winning, instead of the music of the movie that won, can somebody say oops. The John Hughes tribute is ridiculous when so many other people died this year, where were their special tributes as well? I guess if your friends run things when you die, they give you a special tribute. Where was Farrah Fawcett and Bea Arthur on the In Memoriam tribute? I wonder if Avatar lost votes because of the Hurt Locker producer was swaying votes to their little indie film, which cost that producer his seat at the Oscars this year.

Do you know how cinematography works in general?

Yeah I get the art.

I do, and it's still kinda weird having such an effects-heavy film win for cinematography. There's a lot of real-world stuff that cinematographers have to work with (lighting, camera/film choice, lens choice), that a CGI movie wouldn't have at all, because you can do whatever you want on the computer.

^^^ This

Well, the only fundamental difference is that on-set cinematographers alter real life, while those that don't literally work off a blank (digital) canvas.

It's highly arguable which of the two is harder (I personally think it's the latter due to having to create everything from scratch), but certainly they both have the same exact job to do.

Exact same job but one has the advantage of creating the scnene from scratch, thus taking away from the craft.

So what the black hell was wrong with the usually calm & suave Clooney?!?

And what is the craft defined as, exactly? I get the feeling people think computer work is a magic button and thus any work put into it isn't as valid.

cinematography is about the lighting, the ambience, the mood, the shot, if anything that stuff is HARDER to achieve in the computer not easier because in a lot of cases in the real world you get good lighting for free.
I don't know how anyone who saw avatar would deny it the cinematography award, if I'm honest I thought it had the best cinematography by a mile and I saw most of the nomienees to compare and contrast.

is it possible to watch the Oscars online? I had to go to work :(

Anyone else think we'll revert back to 5 films for Best Picture next year? It really seemed hardly worth it in the end.

Shoulda called in sick. ;) I've seen some parts have started to be uploaded to Youtube so you may wanna head over and watch it now before they're removed.

I think personally I'm more impressed when the filmmakers are able to paint with their light and create terrific visuals on the set and then with post, as opposed to just being on the computer, and in general I think Bruno delbonnel did just an amazing job on Harry Potter. I'm just more impressed by that. Avatar got the award I think mainly responsible for its look, which was visual effects, so I don't think it needed to win cinematography for what visual effects was winning for. In fact when it comes to cinematography, I think Inglourious Basterds was better too. That film was wonderfully shot.

Though Avatar did use new camera tech, but then you can say TDK was the first feature film to use IMAX cameras, and that didn't win.

Congrats to Jeff Bridges for winning the oscar for his role as Iron Monger in Iron Man.

I'm glad to see the Academy made the right choice instead of ******ing Jim Cameron like they did at the globes. Avatar was good, but the story bordered on plagarism and to declare it the best picture of the year is laughable.

A lot of people have been suggesting that he was in on the joke and his angry look was part of it.

I thought it was blooming obvious Clooney was playing along. Some people just take things way to literally.

Agreed. If nothing else can be said about Clooney, he's always had a sense of humor about himself. There is no reason to believe last night to be an exception.

I didn't watch the Oscars (not a fan of them at all), but I saw the Horror tribute montage on YouTube and was surprised to see that. It's about time Horror films got the recognition they deserve from the Oscars.

Sandra Bullock won Best Actress, Oscars getting funny every year.

Ok i knew that THL was going to take the big, but sound? Seriously? Over Avatar?

a lot of SHH members belived that D9 and Up had a chance :hehe:

why would they change it? as long as people belive that other movies have a chance why not? :yay:
