94th Annual Academy Awards

People getting nominated or winning for works that aren’t their best has a long tradition there. The more cumulatively popular you become over the years has an effect.

I think they'll do what they did with LOTR and wait until Dune Part 2 (or Dune Messiah) comes out before letting it win the big boy awards.

I actually didn't realize that Villeneuve was snubbed for Dune. That sucks but there's always hope for Part 2.
Get ready for even lower ratings. I’m not saying they should nominate commercial movies not just ratings but they dearly are in love with themselves.
Yeah, they could have squeezed in a BP nom for No Way Home not just for the ratings but for its significance in being the first real post-pandemic blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad got snubbed for VFX. That deserved a nod.
I'd even say it deserved a nomination more than Shang-Chi, No Way Home and Free Guy but it doesn't even matter because Dune has this one in the bag.
I liked Dune but I don’t think it deserves Best Picture. It was half a movie. It didn’t feel complete (which I know was intentional) but I think there are other movies that deserve the award more.
You could say the same thing for Return of the King and that took home Best Picture, although it could be argued that was the Academy recognizing the trilogy as a whole.

For LOTR, I feel like each of the films felt self contained even though there was an over arching singular story spanning the three films. Dune just felt like half a movie and kind of abruptly ended. I know that was on purpose but it still felt that way IMO.

Yeah. I liked Dune a lot but that was such a lackluster way to end the film. In each of the LOTR movies, you had an epic conclusion. Fellowship’s is smaller in scale than the other two but you still had a badass battle between the heroes and the Uruk-Hai, an emotion death for Boromir and Frodo realizing that he had to make the rest of journey on his own (well, with Sam). Dune had a mediocre knife fight and Zendaya all but turning to the camera and saying, “Just wait for part 2.”

Granted, I know Denis was trying to stay true to the books but given that he made other little changes, he could have upped the ante on the finale a bit.

LotR had a huge viewership and fan base back then, and after the 3rd movie the Academy bend to the hype. Dune (though being my favourite movie of 2021) doesn’t even had a big viewership.

Same people who jumped all over Robert Pattinson. Twilight was NOT a good example of how talented those 2 are.
This is a complete fallacy.

Starting with Robert receiving far less backlash than, say, Ben Afleck, and his haters at this point are mostly certain cultists.

Robert was one of the top fancast for the fanboys, and any detractor was getting educated with his filmography, there was a lot of support for him. Let's not forget.

If you can't see the big difference between of criticism about Robert and the criticism about Kristen in this very forum (I don't even have to send you somewhere else), there's nothing I can do.
To them, Robert was suddenly the greatest actor of all time and they were always bringing his movies up, but for the "same people" apparently Kristen's filmography was literal non-existent, and you can see it in the respective Spencer thread, there was nothing that could make them change their minds (ironically same people who now stan for RP).

So definitely different situations.

I don't see why bringing up people's likely reaction from 10+ years ago.
I was talking about the present. It's not my fault that you're misunderstanding me on purpose.
And yeah, maybe it was just you.

I haven’t seen the movie, but some of these damn clips these people are using to prove their points are friggin hilarious. Like Mommie Dearest funny.

I gotta watch this movie with an edible or two.

The line in the movie that stuck with me since I saw it is my man Jared Leto who said with his chest in a Super Mario accent... "I want to fly... like a pigeon." Incredible.

If WB had bothered to make a complete film, Villeneuve might have received that nomination.

Or Bruno, Sadly, YOU HAD ONE JOB, ACADEMY!

Disney didn't submit Bruno for Oscar consideration, only Dos Orugitas. This was done before the movie opened and nobody could have known how Bruno would take off.

But No Time to Die is going to win anyway, so it doesn't matter much.

Since Encanto is nominated for Best Score they could still perform Bruno live if they want to, I suppose.

I hope that you right about No Time To Die.

Nominations announcement:

Not a terrible year. Super relieved that Kristen Stewart made it in after getting snubbed nearly everywhere else. I don't mind Denis missing out - the direction was not the best part of Dune, and it was a stacked category this year. I'm more annoyed by several of the others that got ignored. The most glaring snub for me is definitely 'tick... tick... boom!' getting shut out of Best Picture.

Disney didn't actually submit 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' for consideration. And I kind of understand - it was a super unlikely pick to be the most popular song in the movie.

I am beyond ecstatic for Aunjanue Ellis getting her nomination. One of the most talented black actresses that we’ve ever had.
Likewise. Don't see here winning, but she was on par w/DeBose. Outshone Smith in the same movie, whose performance I really didn't fall in love with on an Oscar-level.
I'd love to see the faces of all the old and horrible fanboys who were attacking Kristen Stewart. Literal dumb clowns lmao

Love to see it.
Same. Was nervous for a second after the BAFTAS and SAG, but so happy for her.
Nic Cage erasure
I knew it was coming. Still hurts, though. Same with Winston Duke for 'Nine Days' and Rachel Sennot in 'Shiva Baby.' So many great performances blotted out by big buck campaigns.

 This again? "They are deeply in love with themselves" - Is that supposed to be a bad thing? That's the point of awards, to show love to the best of the industry, not to chase after ratings by pandering to generic blockbusters. It's not the Academy's fault that people don't go see original movies anymore.

You're right, they do have a legitimacy problem - But that would be solved by nominating movies that have been seen by even LESS people.

If Bruno was nominated, it could have given NTTD a run for its money and maybe even won given how popular it is. Bond songs seem to be the frontrunner because of Skyfall and Writing's on the Wall but the Sam Smith song won because of weak competition. NTTD is going up against a Disney song and Beyonce.

Jodi Comer’s cover of Fantasy should have been nominated :o

I doubt Andrew will get the award. The female award will go Kristin Stewart and best supporting male to another white actor. Aunjau e Ellis sure will win, but the winners will all be white but her. That’s why Will Smith will win best male.

You misread me. Rob and Kristen long-since proved to me that they're damn good actors (The Lighthouse was ****ing FANTASTIC and I also enjoyed Snow White and the Huntsman). My point was that those damn Twilight movies were so badly produced that they hampered their acting (or actor-induced acting sabotage, per Rob's admission; he's flat out admitted his performance was deliberate because he HATED the material). I never doubted that Rob would make a great Batman and he looks ****ing AMAZING.

Smith's practically pre-detirmined win is more a "lifetime achievement award" than anything else. It's a bummer, because there's so many better performances this year - Garfield, Washington, Cooper - not to mention ones that were never really in the conversation like Nicolas Cage and Winston Duke.
