The only way it would work is if they made sure to set it up the way the original show was set up--you'd have to have that 10 minutes at the beginning with Bruce Wayne's last night out before giving up the mask, then the skip forward 20 years. Otherwise people are going to be confused about whether this is set in the Nolanverse continuity.
I think that goes without saying though. If you're not going show Batman's last hurrah (2019 for him in BB) and the subsequent heart issue that forces him into retirement there is no point in doing the movie at all.
Even though I want Eastwood for Older BW of the futuristic era..I think the plausible way would be to find your Bruce Wayne for the first 10-15 minutes(whether it's Keaton, Caviezel or whoever) and use make up and/or CGI to age him forward.
Another thing you have to avoid is people comparing it to Spider-Man. The 17 year-old hero, the futuristic setting with the super science, the fantastic villains with super powers--the general public might see it as some kind of attempt to capture the Spider-Man zeitgeist even though it's quite different (it wouldn't help that The Amazing Spider-Man was so...average). It would probably have to have a darker or more serious tone, which might not be the best way to go with it...
In any case, I'd love to see it happening but people are so used to Batman being this very dark film series, both tonally and visually, that to get them interested in a futuristic, brighter setting might be difficult.
Any incarnation of Batman is going to inherently have a darker tone than most any other superhero.
Other than being a teenager with a family member dying, I don't really see any major comparison or similarity between Terry and Peter or their alter-egos that would make people confused between the two..but that's just me.
Sure Terry will be in a world of flying cars and futuristic elements, but that is the point, it's Batman Beyond. TASM wasn't all that futuristic. Other than a Giant Lizard and a Teenager who calls himself spider-man, it was present day. The stuff they were doing at Oscorp didn't even seem all that far off from reality, to me. Neo-Gotham still has it's fair share of dark corners and alleys you don't want to travel down or the Jokerz or worse might get you.
And the fact that TASM was in fact kind of average, shouldn't hurt BB at all, in my opinion.
EDIT: Now, if the Batman reboot is a little more comic-booky than the Nolan films have been (at least in allowing more supernatural villains such as Clayface, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, etc. into the films), and they're done well and the public accepts them, then that might be the time to try and turn Batman Beyond into a live-action movie.
I agree, Batman Beyond probably isn't happening at least until they figure out what they're doing with the new batman and probably even the other movies like Justice League. I would hope that the people in charge of the reboot keep Batman Beyond in mind with everything else. It would be great if they kept in futuristic continuity like they did with the series.
Now, as for the villain, I think the arc of the first two episodes with Derek Powers makes the most sense. Maybe one of the other villains as an underling to establish the futuristic tone, so I guess Shriek should be in it (to see that silent scene in the film would be pretty amazing). By the end Shriek should be deaf, move on to stopping Derek Powers from selling the chemical. For two hours I think it would be fine to have both that arc and the first Shriek episode, more than enough time to cover all that.
I agree, You kind of have to do this origin of Terry becoming Batman. I see what you're saying about Shriek, but don't forget Powers has Mr. Fixx. I can see Powers even employing either Venom-laced strongmen or splicer rejects to do his bidding too. I would just hope we get an epic battle in the end on the submarine (I know in the show it involved powers' kid and all but you can make a final battle on the sub work for this movie I think)
As for Powers, I know he is Dum Dum Dugan, but Neal McDonough would be a pretty good Powers/Blight imo. While Walking Tall wasn't that great of a movie, he proved he can play a pretty good prick villain.
