Do you celebrate Christmas and Easter? If yes why?

In my opinion as a Christian if you do not believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ then you shouldn’t celebrate his birth or the day he rose from the dead. There is no other reason to celebrate these holidays because they are Christian holidays not Secular.

Well I'm a christian and I celebrate these holidays but for non christians they are also holidays. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus but historians have thought that he was not born in December, the holiday was moved to December to replace the pagan Solstice Celebrations.

Yes because most of my family is Christian, so I will celebrate these holidays.

Though I am not an Athiest in actuality, but I don't believe the Bible.

You're like the Grinch.

For those who don't believe in Jesus, those two holidays have become secularized. They don't worship Christ, but I think -- to some degree -- they still mimic some of his thoughts since on both of those days, there is some giving, sharing, and time spent with families, things he would have approved of. I admit that I do get aggrevated that the real message gets lost, buried under commercialism, but I think it's good for folks to spend time with one another and that is just as important. :)

There are plenty of atheists that believe Jesus Christ was a real person.

I dunno, saying an atheist has no right to celebrate Christmas is like saying an atheist has no right to share and give gifts

An atheist doesn't believe in God or religion, so essentially an atheist can do what the hell he likes, including celebrating Christmas simply because he likes the traditions of the holiday.

I celebrate all religious or non religious holidays that involve getting out of work, presents, cake or an excuse to drink heavily and sing off tune.

Christmas is Santa Claus day and Easter is for celebrating the comming of the Easter bunny, it has nothing to do with Jesus or Christians.

simply the majority of people do one thing and believe another...

such is the way with mankind.

unfortunately or fortunately, bank holidays have been placed on these days so based on this there are very few days for when the majority of people aren't working so society has forced this...double standard

Not everyone is Irish, but a lot of people take part in St. Patrick's day. Same goes for Christmas or any other holiday.

ha, how many non muslims do you see taking part in ramadan? Even if they reside in a muslim based country.

lol

or people who celebrate mardi gras and easter but miss out the whole 'lent' period...

peeps do the crime but don't do the time...

my family do, and I get dragged in, but I avoid presents etc, my family ignores easter, but christmas is so much national holiday it's hard to avoid, but I do loathe that time of year.

Christmas has pretty much became a consumerized, secular holiday to a large extent. If people who dont believe in God still want to celebrate in gift-giving, peace on Earth, and all that jazz, I dont have any issues with it.

Not to mention, Christ, savior or not, wasnt even born in late December, they converted that date to coincide with the Pagan holiday of Yule.

Besides you should only be worried about what you take from the holiday, not what everyone else does.

Easter is more about fun for the kids of the family. christmas is about family for atheists, and not Christ. Even for most Christains christmas is a holiday that is more about family values than Christmas. The overwhelming majority of Americans are not thinking about religion on Christmas. It's about giving, receiving, and watching the little ones smile as they get that gift they wanted.

In fact most atheists do celebrate Christmas. Athiests believe in family values just like Christains do, even though Bill O Reilly claims to have insight into the atheist mindset and claims were trying to destroy it.

i'm more agnostic than atheist, but i still celebrate Christmas since most of my family and friends do...

...however, i can't help but to think that Jesus would be disappointed with everyone celebrating him the way we do. i could swear i read somewhere that he never wanted anyone to worship or idolize him.

Any true christian would welcome any nonchristian celebrating their holidays even if they don't believe simply for the fact that spreading goodwill and enjoying your family is something Jesus would want regardless of the reason. If the spirit is there then only good can come of it, I feel no need to disinclude anyone for their beliefs. Especailly cause I like to crash other people's religious holidays.

I'm an atheist and i celebrate Christmas for the same reason everyone does..
FREE STUFF!!
Its been going on for WAY longer then 2000 years.. and its NOT a Christian holiday..its just yet another thing they stole from everyone..

Modern day Christmas is a mix of the Roman "Saturnalia" (December 17-23) and the Norse "Yule" (Late-December Early-January, Later locked to December 25th)

As an agnostic, I endorse these two posts.

All I am saying is that if you strongly believe that there is no God then you should avoid his holidays. I don't celebrate Hanukkah, Ramadan, Rosh Hashanah or any other religous holidays that are not Christian. Because i don't have the same beliefs.

As a Christian I know the history of Christmas and why we celebrate it in December, but that doesn't take away the fact that we are celebrating the birth of "The most important man to ever live." And that easter is the celebration of his triumph over death. It was the Secular world that comericalized Christmas and Easter not Christians.

I find it funny that an Athiest will celebrate a Christian holiday but not a Jewish or Muslim one. To me and maybe I am alone here, but it makes Athiests out to be hypocrites. Come on stand up for what you bleieve in avoid all religous holidays. Talk about doing it for your family all you want, but if they love you they will respect your belief to not celebrate.

Well...they are national holidays...are they not?

I thought you were taking like a 3 month break?

Then why don't Jewish and Muslim people celebrate them? Because they don't believe in them. It is simple if you don't believe it don't celebrate.
