A Study On The Beauty Of Women...

I admire Red Marvel's posts as much as the next guy...which is like every guy.

But, what exactly did Red Marvel say that should be a surprise to you? Good nails, good abs and calfs, arms slightly muscular and B-C Breast size with a proportional ass?

Aren't those mostly givens when describing a fit woman?

I'm not puposely trying to give you a hard time here but I'm still befuddled on how this is such a mystery.

Jag, how about you keep your "matter of fact" comments to yourself, and I think both of us might be a little more happy.

Got it this time? Good .

Translation: ****! I'm cornered.

Let's review something:

We're looking for physical attributes, actually.

So, the women you're planning on portraying in your comic won't have any character attributes or traits? 'Cuz, I gotta agree with red....those are the essence of a woman, not two-dimensional **** and a small waist.

jag

I didn't ask for essence, I asked for what physical traits are admired in a woman by men and women alike.

I didn't ask if you thought it'd work.

I didn't ask if you think she should be have an admirable personality.

You don't know the character, you don't know the background, nor do you need to. I know what I'm doing, I know what I'm trying to get out of this, and I'm not trying to find out whether or not you think what I'm doing will work.

It's what each person views as an aesthetically perfect woman. Like I told the others, if you're not willing to tell the other writers and me that, then don't bother. We've got a plan, part of it involves finding out what physical traits are viewed as "perfect beauty" so to speak, in a woman.

I tried to give you a perfectly reasonable viewpoint and asked you a question that could have spawned a rather interesting discussion and you came at me like a rabid spider monkey for no damn good reason whatsoever. So, yeah....I'm going to continue giving you grief until you learn how to discuss things like a grownup, mmmkay Junior?

Well, we're just looking for a compilation of what many people find physically beautiful about a woman, whether she was fit or not was up to what the people said. I knew a dude once who would only hook up with larger women, so it was up to our attempted survey here as to what the character would look like.

Kay, thanks, dad.

For two, all I started with was, "We're just looking for physical attributes, actually."

What's wrong with that? Why couldn't it have ended there, you just allow someone else to take control for once, and just gave us your opinion about the PHYSICAL BEAUTY of a woman?

I just don't understand why 3 18 year olds need a compilation of what is attractive in a woman. It sounds like something aliens or robots would try to do honestly.

My friend likes petite girls 5'3". I like women with curves, lips, ****, and hips. Obviously our tastes differ but I'm sure we could come together with an idea of what is attractive in a woman.

It was already raised by someone once in this thread, but I'm going to help you out as a fellow writer. First, the personality and character traits of a character, when fully fleshed out, can be extremely useful in driving the physical appearance you paint for them. Two, trying to calculate how to draw "the ultimate woman" that will appeal to every single potential reader is not only damn near impossible, since everyone has different tastes, but takes the heart and soul out of the character that you are trying to create. Create a character that appeals to you both in their character profile and appearance and it captures your passion over the character, which will bring it to life. Simply pandering to what you think is the broadest audience will most likely bring mediocrity to the character and make it uncompelling.

You are welcome.

If only you had asked yourself that question before you responded to me in the first place.

Honestly, neither of you are doing the work, so why offer advice on that? I asked a simple question jag, either answer it, or drop the damned subject.

Seriously, this is getting pathetic.

I asked for no more than, "What do you phsysically find attractive in a woman?" You don't know what else we've got fleshed out for this character, so why bother coming in and telling us what you think we're doing wrong with those parts of her?

Then I have to agree with Erz, here. And, if you're not willing to listen to anyone's input aside from what it is that you think you want to hear, then you're doing yourself a giant disservice as an artist.

I remember while I was in college I tried to do a comic design of myself....and when I did the "love interest" I based it on the girl I was crushing on at the time.

Case in point kiddo.

One woman ... two differing opinions. Society's take on attractive women and what they look like? Check out the cover this month of Cosmo, FHM, Maxim and Playboy.

Different strokes for different folks.

Jag and others have made the point. Develop the character and who they are ... the physical flows from that ...

Look at Kate Beckinsale in Underworld. Would you imagine her as a killing machine before that? No way. But she brought the character to life.

now Red. What is happening in the kitchen? :ghost: Dammit!

Mach. My point was buried in amongst goofiness.

But seriously.

If you know the character and who she is, what she is like, her sexual preference etc. let her tell you what she looks like.

Close your eyes and hear her voice. Let her speak to YOU and tell you what she looks like and how she acts.

Trying to ask others for a societal ideal and shoving that onto YOUR character is a poor way to try and create something meaningful.

Cut Jag some slack and others. Red gave you some great stuff to work with as far as proportions etc. and that wasn't helpful to you?

Just trying to help ... since YOU asked. :yay:

My predominant problem is that I DO in fact have a picture of her in my head, but it looks too much like a character that already exists [in DC comics], which is what I'm trying to get away from. Hence why I came to a place where others who are interested in comics could give their input about physical beauty. Seriously, jag, quit trying to turn it into, "you're hurting yourself." It's not about my method, it's about the question.

I sense your frustration Mach ...

I think that perhaps a very specific question with variables or parameters may have guided the input on the thread from the beginning.

If you character looks similar to another Character, there is probably a reason for that.

You may want to think about your character and the character she is "similar" too. Perhaps that can guide you to create a difference or nuance for your character.

ie -- she is a younger sister to the other character "perhaps." Then her attitude would change slightly, her appearance perhaps radically but it creates for you a difference.

She is the opposite to that character. Batman and Superman look similar, but completely different. Colours and shades and a mask?

Does that help?

You're not going to get creative clarity from a message board. Seriously. CR had the best advice when he told you "Close your eyes and hear her voice. Let her speak to YOU and tell you what she looks like and how she acts.". It's got to come from within, man. Anything else just isn't going to fit. I've been in a similar situation where a character I was writing started to sound a whole lot like another popular character (in my case, the character was a whole lot like Ripley from Aliens). I wound up having to change some of her psychological profile in order for her to evolve past the Ripley clone stage and become something all her own. And it worked better in the story than it would have otherwise. Most of my characters are based on people that I actually know, to a certain extent, and then I apply modifications, embellishments and sometimes even transplant them into an entirely different body altogether. Inspiration is all around, but ultimately, the character's got to come from inside you. If you want inspiration, go cruise the Maxim website and start looking at their pictorials until you find a girl that you think fits the character and then tweak her until she fits the bill. Generic descriptions aimed towards finding a consensus is probably just going to frustrate you and take you further away from your vision.

Yeah, that does help.

Jag, I honestly do see your point. I just get attached to views I have on my own characters, and it's hard for me to change them after that. Since this character [physically only] popped into my mind appearing almost identical to Alex Ross's portrayl of Poison Ivy, I didn't want to keep it, as it's not original. Since the other writer heavily involved with this character also had the same view I had on this character, I decided to take it elsewhere.

This sounds argumentative, but it's to your Maxim comment:

Last night I was speaking with a friend of mine about the character, and told her I'm trying to avoid making this woman a sex symbol, but more of a symbol of beauty, preferrably artistic in nature. I want to give her the portrayl as if she were a modern-day Eve [ex.: the mother of all men and women today, thus beheld with reverence and- hopefully- utmost beauty], rather than [JAL's gonna rape me for this] Jessica Alba.

Yeah, that does help.

Then this gets right to the heart of it: you're going to get Jessica Alba or her equivalent from asking this line of questioning on a board like this. That's what's in popular culture today, and it will be reflected by a lot of the people you're asking for that kind of input from. Which is completely against the grain of your vision, which is what I was sort of warning you about. Think of actresses, athletes, artists, musicians or even women you know that somewhat fall into how you envision this character and then start molding a picture based on all of them. An amalgam of all those women will start to come together into what you're after. And she won't be Jessica Alba or any of the other women that constantly have photos of them posted on these boards. ;)

jag

Or, when in doubt, make her look like Angelina Jolie. I won't complain.

Not to be an a** but in trying to help.

Look at Monica or Jessica on this page ...

http://www.superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?t=259469&page=335

They are perhaps closer to what you are looking for.

Keep in mind older woman have fuller breasts and hips than younger woman (generally) and that will also guide you.

See if you ask the right question and help us understand I think everyone here is really just trying to help you out ... not be jerks.

Good luck and start drawing! :yay:

Or like the woman in Kaz's avvy ... then none of us will complain ... :)

I just may put our rendition of the character up, provided I can do a good enough rendition of her.

Thanks for the help. I'll probably be started on her fairly soon.

The little bit of information I do wanna give out, however, is that she's based around roses, as her name actually means "wild rose." Problem is, I don't wanna make her a redhead [to avoid looking like Poison Ivy] nor give her red lipstick. I keep picturing her with different color lipstick [preferrably the same color as her eyes- which may or may not be a normal color- but not necessarily the same color as her hair]. Purples and greens coming popping up in my mind, but I don't know what to go with.

I think it would be nice to see a woman who is beautiful but doesn't have the stereotypical huge breasts and ass and a teeny waist. There are tons of women without outrageous bodies who are beautiful too and it would probably help make her more relateable to the common individual.

it would probably help make her more relateable to the common individual.

Actually, this is exactly what I'm trying to do with the comic. I want to do just as you said and make her naturally beautiful, rather than putting Angelina Jolie into comics.

It's one of my firm beliefs with literature and other forms of art that people typically admire what they can relate to, thus I want to make the world that the comic characters live in as believable as it can possibly be, once the "superpower" aspect is set aside.

I know many of the characters have superpowers and whatnot, but I want to portray them in a sense that, although they're demi-gods in their own right, they're still humans. Much like the message the Spider-Man movies sent across, "with great power comes great responsibility," and such.
