A French artist has unveiled a working hoverboard as his latest creation - and revived the childhood dreams of men everywhere.

Nils Guadagnin says his creation - a copy of the hoverboard from the movie Back to the Future II - was created with the help of a Dutch firm of levitation experts.

The life-size model has gone on show in a number of galleries and uses an electromagnetic system in the board and plinth to levitate, while a laser system stabilises it in the air.

Unfortunately the hover board is not powerful enough to support the weight of someone standing on it... so your ideas of recreating any Marty McFly moments will have to be put on hold, for now.

probably doesn't work over water

A working hoverboard implies that I can get on it:o Not a piece of floating movie memorabilia.

I get how it stays in mid-air but I'm most intrigued by these lasers that stabilize it.

Delete thread. :(

So it's basically a piece of ****ing modern art then.

In my area, by the mall, there's an abandoned gas station called "Griff's Mini-Mart"....I just hope that 2015 comes and I'm still here so I can properly enjoy it.

Yup, exactly. It is an art piece/ movie recreation/ prop, nothing functional, not what was promised. They make one you can ride on, then call it "a working hoverboard".

It's like saying you built a real life ED-209, and it's a Fiberglass statue with a rotating base and a megaphone built it. As opposed to a fully armed, walking deathbot.

It's just stupid, call it a f'ing prop.

-waits for something you make that's better-

Is anyone worried that the Dutch have levitation experts?

You can tell he's an artist by how unsatisfied he looks with life in that first photo. He's standing next to a bright pink (semi) hover board with his arms crossed!

If that were me, I'd be standing next to it, making guns with my fingers pointing at it and making this :awesome: face.

Hey now, we have our very own levitation expert here in the States...

Can I put a pre-order in for the 2020 model that can support my mildly lardic ass?
