While people around the world are busy weighing up the relative merits of Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood as awards season heats up, spare a thought for the underappreciated and underexposed Visual Effects Society Awards, who today announced their nominees.

Foremost among them is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, which picked up nominations in both the “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Motion Picture” category and the “Best Single Visual Effect of the Year”, the only film nominated in both. It’s also up for Outstanding Animated Character in a Live-Action Motion Picture, Outstanding Created Environment in a Live Action Motion Picture, Outstanding Models and Miniatures in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Compositing in a Motion Picture. Hmm, snappy titles, those categories.

Also nominated in the Visual Effects Driven category are The Fountain and Charlotte’s Web, both sadly ignored by the Academy’s long list. Charlotte also picked up two nominations in Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Motion Picture category, but The Fountain only received one nod.

As for the rest, Best Single Visual Effect of the Year also saw nominations for Children of Men (the birth sequence), Poseidon and X-Men: The Last Stand. Superman Returns was largely overlooked, except for a nod for Outstanding Special Effects, along with Casino Royale.

The full list of film nominations is below, but you’ll have to wait until February 11 for the results.

not surprised one bit.

Neither am I. The over-use of CGI - and it looked poorer than the POTC CGIU by far which kinda explains POTC getting so many nors.

The flying, except for the plane resuue, seemed purposely far away. Like they did not want to take the time and effort to make it real.

After more than 20 years the SR flying was not much better than S: TM IMO.

What I don't get - all that money and the FX was unspectacular. FF 2 with a smaller budget has put out a flying sequence teaser that franjly blows away anything in SR.

Given a sequel would have a much smaller budget I am not at all confident a sequel will be able to compete with the bar being set by Spidey, FF and GhostRider. Maybe Singer is just not good at incorporating FX but SR was definitely inferior in visual effect to the list of nominated movies. Do you know how that and really pathetic that is?

I already posted this article days ago...it was largely ignored...

the fact that it was ignored proves something...

What are you trying to say KAK, that people would much rather respond to your threads. :oldrazz:
I was responding to how SR was ignored in the nominations, not to you already making this thread.

The effects were crap when you take into account how much the movie cost to make.
