The Winter Soldier Agent 13

No, Black Widow is the co-lead because it fits into the themes of the movie, and because the Winter Soldier is in the movie.
No, speno is right.

Black Widow fits the themes, but then so would any SHIELD agent, including Sharon. And sure she had a relationship with the Winter Soldier, but Steve's past with Bucky is what really matters.

Scarjo being a more bankable star and her being a fixture from the Avengers are definitely reasons why I'm sure Marvel nudged the screenwriters to focus on her.

Well truth is we know nothing about the actual screen time for Sharon in the movie. It may surprise all of us.

So long as the writing's there and EVC's given a chance to make Sharon a memorable personality, I'm good even if she's not co-lead.

I'd have been fine if she wasn't co-lead, but it goes beyond that. Not only is she not the co-lead (frankly I don't think anyone should be co-lead, Steve is the only lead there should be), she isn't the female lead, she isn't a major supporting either.

She's absent from set footage, press material and trailers.

So it's a question of whether she has three minutes of screentime or five. Not much of a chance to be memorable, there.

Even if it is good writing and a good scene she's in, she'll most assuredly be completely overshadowed by Natasha's much larger role.

And come Captain America 3, who are audiences and the production crew be more interested in, the character who was co-lead in the last movie, or someone who was there for five minutes?

Well, she did have a couple seconds shot in the extended trailer, more than Smulders has gotten so far. Promo hasn't even really started yet. I might worry more if she's not in the next trailer, maybe.

I don't know, I still say regardless of the early promotion which is focusing rightly on Robert Redford to set the tone of the movie, it's really too early to tell what Sharon's role or the impact of her role will be in the film, too soon to be worrying about it.

A good actor/actress and good writing can make an impact if done right, no matter the screentime allotted.

Well, she's got the look. BOY does she have the look. Now, let's see if she's got the acting chops to pull it off. Also, I want to see Sharon in the white jumpsuit, or at least the grey one from Secret Avengers.

I think this brief scene pretty much shoots down an earlier rumor that Sharon was playing a next-door neighbor of Steve --- using a name other than Sharon, IIRC --- implying that she was spying on him, yadda yadda yadda.

This scene shows that she works with Pierce in some capacity, and neither Sharon nor Cap know each other yet. But both would obviously *like* to get to know each other better. :word:

I get the feeling that she may be working as a spy for Fury to keep an eye on Pierce since we all know Fury doesn't really trust anyone.

She can still be his neighbor. That might even be the first time he sees her. She could be working undercover.

I love that look they give each either.

I want to draw love hearts on captain Americas eyes lol

I think it was Emily herself who said that her character starts out as neighbors with Steve so I doubt that it's a rumor and like others have said, it's likely a cover up for her.

Steve's look is one of recognition/realization.

It's likely still true. And Steve is surprised that his neighbor is another agent.

Exactly. That is what I got from the tiny bit of footage.

I just hope that she kills in this role (she will) so that it leads to more stuff for her. She's fantastic. Agents of SHIELD could use her.

I hope so.

Sharon is one of the oft-overlooked characters in comics, and I'm hoping her appearances consist of more than appearing Cap's movies, of which I don't think there will be more than one after this one.

The profile of the actress, combined with some rumors I've heard about her role, make her a perfect fit for a recurring character on AoS.

Maybe; but I don't see recognition/realization there so much as "smokin' hot....who is *this* chick....???" If Steve had recognized her, he would've stopped short to do a double take and maybe ask her "WTF." Not just walk on by without saying a word, don't you think?

Could be that he finds out *later,* after this chance meeting in the hallway to Pierce's office, that she's his neighbor. Would especially make sense if SHIELD puts their agents up in government housing, like a dorm.

I've seen enough of the posters and trailers to know that Widow not Sharon is the female lead
You have misinterpreted my original post. We all know who the female lead is, my question is what knowledge do you have that that is problem. What is exactly wrong about Widow being the female lead character? What about the story and plot makes Widow being the lead female character wrong?

Do you have some knowledge about the film that none of us do?

Considering we are talking Winter Soldier, a possible SHIELD conspiracy, and we know that Cap is still adjusting, Widow seems the perfect female lead. She is afterall Russian, a SHIELD agent and Cap's fellow Avenger.

I have been pretty open that I think Marvel screwed this up by passing on the opportunity to cast Hayley Atwell as Sharon. It DOES follow the comic cannon, after all. And they could change her looks and she's a good enough actress to pull it off.

However, based on the VERY limited glimpse we have of Sharon (Emily)--geez, do she and Evans not look like siblings? LOL. They're like a very good looking brother and sister.

I'm still shocked by how little we've seen of her in this movie. Sharon Carter is a pretty important character to Cap's story and Emily VanCamp is a pretty known actress, specifically from Revenge.

I don't think anyone's called Black Widow wrong for a female lead. I'm sure she'll serve the movie well.

But given that Sharon is a pretty big fixture in Steve's stories, while Natasha isn't, I second that I'd have liked it better if Sharon was the lead.

And as Sharon is also a SHIELD agent, she could fit as well.

And I'm probably alone, but I don't really agree that a connection to the Winter Soldier is a huge plus.

Basically, I think its more interesting if Steve has to work to find out who the Winter Soldier is than to have Natasha tell him.

But Sharon is no Avenger, so I see why they did it.

Isn't the question what is right for this film? And if that answer is Natasha, why shouldn't she be the female lead? There is a difference between wanting Sharon, and saying she should be the lead, without acknowledge the filmverse and what is best for this particular story and film.
