I think around seasons 3 and 4 the canon debate was still important even as the movies started breaking from what happen with the TV show because being part of the movies most likely kept ABC television interested and the show on the air. I doubt a transfer to Freeform would have happened. The show got better once it broke away from adhering to what was going on in the movies. I liked the show fine. I wouldn't consider it the best Marvel show but it was certainly far from the worst. And I also remember how exciting it was when it first started airing because it was the first significant expansion of the MCU outside of the movies (well, before everything was deemed canon years later anyway).
Personally I don't think the canon debate about this show is all that important since we're not likely to see most of these characters again, if any. In my headcanon the main timeline of this show happened in an alternate universe where the Battle of New York and all of the events of Phase 2, etc. still happened but Coulson was resurrected in this universe whereas he remains dead in the main 616 universe.
But by season 5 when I bet they guessed the actions of Avengers: Infinity War from the movie trailers and missed I was surprised at the renewal and gobsmacked when it was a order for two mini seasons..
