I'm confused, what's this talk about changing Monica's ethnicity? Is Ruth Negga not black?
It's sad that Marvel has so few Black female characters that the only ones who fans can name are Storm, Monica and Misty Knight. That is the reason Monica was the first character a lot of people thought of -- there are only three that come to mind, and one of them isn't available.
How is it people started assuming she would be Monica anyway?

t:There are other less well know black characters she could be. They've already shown that they don't mind using super obscure characters with the sidekick from Slapstick.

One of the Whedon team said in an interview that they had no idea who Mike Peterson was from the comics until the interviewer told them about him. That was just a coincidence, though one wonders why they don't have a researcher on staff to look through Marvel's database for character names and such. (That's assuming that Marvel has a database.)
I know a lot of people (including myself) are wanting every hero & villain on the show to have some kind of link to the comics, & I think a good portion of them will be from the comics. However, (my thought is) during the first couple episodes (especially) they probably will not. This is because they want the main focus to be on us learning about this new team of Shield Agents, and throwing in a villain or hero from the comics might not only take away from us learning about these agents, but it could also be problematic in not allowing adequate time to develop the heroes or villians story properly. So, in my opinion it is better we go with heroes and villians we don't care about for the first episodes, until the core group has been explained, and they can spend more time giving these other comic book characters proper treatment within the show.
Just my thoughts on it though.
Surfer
That may be the case for the first two episodes, but episode 3 will have Dr. Franklin Hall, who turns into Graviton. Whether or not Dr. Hall becomes Graviton remains to be seen.
Hall could develop powers which, upon their first meeting, are within SHIELD's capabilities of handling him. But over time they would develop and augment tremendously so that eventually only the Avengers could take him on. So don't have him at full strength immediately so that he can become Graviton but still be in SHIELD's league.
If they defeat him, someone could later observe that his powers seem to be growing at an incredible rate and if it keeps up he'll be unstoppable. SHIELD would've only lucky to stop him now because he hadn't reached full maturity.

Ain't nobody got time for that.
