Alex Maleev is a big prick!

I've had a couple good experiences.

I met Brian M Bendis at a con and it was very memorable. Basically, I waited in his line for somewhere near an hour, finally got to him, and then realized that the guy in front of me had brought the whole comic box with him to have Bendis sign. It must have literally been at least a hundred comics, probably a lot more.

Anyways, Bendis signs every single one of them, smiling the whole time, and I get to go up next. I said to him "You're a lot more patient than I am." And get this, he says back, "Well, i figured he spent the money to buy them all, the least I could do is sign them for him." Crazy nice, eh?

Then he chatted with he while he signed the few I brought. I told him how I owned every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man including all the variants except for the white cover variant for number 1 (which cashes in around $300+). He says to me, "Don't get it, use the money on a bunch of other comics instead."
Pretty awesome.

Also met Steve McNiven (my fav artist) and he was also really nice. I only brought a few comics for signing, but he chatted with me for a bit even after he was done. I told him how his Thor (clone) pic from Civil War was my fav of his pics and he actually flipped open a book on the spot and showed me his original pencil art for it. Great guy.

I met Dan Slott before the '07 SDCC in JFK...the plane was delayed and we hung out in the terminal and talked about books....he's a big EdMcBain fan....he's really nice...met Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver, both great guys....Ed Brubaker is cool, he's a bit snarky though

The part where he is talking about Alex being smug to a friend and the sketch...that was me.

I walked up to his table and there is this giant half eaten pie there and I thought that was odd. I'd never seen that before so I jokingly say "Wow a fan brought you a pie?" and he gives me a look like I just took a poop right infront of his table and he says "yeah!" (as if it's somehow normal for fans to always bring creators giant pies and I'm ******ed for not knowing this).

He grabs my books and starts to sign and I ask if he has room on his list to buy a head sketch. He looks me up and down as if I wouldn't be able to afford it and says "Yes, but it's 40 dollars." I'm a bit confused by this...does he think in Canada 40 bucks is equeviliant to like, 200 in other countrys?

I say that it's no problem and I'll be back later on to get the sketch as I collect my books.

Later on in the day I send my buddy over with my cash to get a Nick Fury.

My friend goes over and says "Hi Mr. Maleev, my friend talked to you earlier about getting a head sketch and I was wondering if you had time t...."

Alex looks at him like he cant believe his ears and says

"Well did your 'friend' tell you it would cost 40 dollars?!?"

(again, what is it about 40 bucks being so much cash to this guy?)

"Uh ..yeah he did, I was just wondering if you had time to do it right now?" and my buddy pulls out the cash and hands it to him. Maleev takes it and does a Fury sketch.
Heh, you should bring a pie to the next comicon you go to that he's at.

AND THEN THROW IT IN HIS FACE!

And say something like, "Remember me? REMEMBER ME?!"

Honestly, from those stories he doesn't sound like too much of a prick really.

Maybe tired and a bit awkward.

Not everyone is Stan the Man.

Only person I ever met at a convention was Toby Maguire a few months before the first Spider-Man movie came out. He was really nice and down to earth. He did a great job answering people's questions and making small talk. Even though some people asked him stupid questions like, "Why doesn't the green goblin look like he does in the comics?
"Oh Well, I don't know. That's more of a question for the costume designer." He seemed like a nice guy.

But you did have to buy a special ticket to get his autograph.

You lucked out, he's actually known for being a jerk to his fans.

Artists can't really be blamed for not being nice all the time, but then of course some of them are just jerks.

Not everyone you meet is a nice person.....people just assume that simply because this person is a writer, artist, or actor that they are automatically a nice person

This may be true but if it weren't for fan liking your stuff and spending money on it they wouldn't be making any money or have a job drawing/doing what they love. There is nothing saying that you have to be bright and chipper all the time but at the least you should be courteous to your fans.

but they aren't buying it for you as a person, its being bought because the quality of work is good....even if Geoff Johns was a total prick and made fun of my mom, Id stil read his stuff because its damn good....Hemingway was a serious ******* and it didnt' affect him any....

Meh I still think if people came out to see you and waited in line just to see someone who they may see as a hero or inspiration to them they should be just brushed off but that's just me.

And come on people, we all know how good picking on nerds is for your confidence!

I had a chance to talk to Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol from BSG) and asked him, as an actor what are the pros and cons of working in Sci-Fi....part of his answer was how loyal the fans can be, conventions and all that....he said some of the actors love the conventions and all that comes with it and some really hate it.....

The Best thing to do in that case is to TELL THE GUY his behavior is outrageous.

You don't need to lose your cool or degrade yourself..but these guys are talented artists..and some times they need a dose of reality.

Say it right to their face and walk away..trust me you'll feel alot better.

Wasn't Hemingway also a shut-in because he, you know, hated people? Which is fine. If these creators don't want to interact with fans, no one's holding a gun to their head to do so. Especially not someone like Maleev, who gets high-profile work from the big 2 and thus doesn't really need cons to act as his personal plug-fest for his latest project or anything.

Yea if you hate the convention scene just don't go.I doubt Maleev needed the extra money from sketches so badly.

He was a shut in and a drunk.....the twofer....

In some cases, they get leaned on to go....or wrangle some extra pay out of it....Dan Slott said he was going in '07 because Marvel was paying for the hotel rooms....all he had to do was pay for his ticket

Again, if it's something he actively dislikes enough to be rude to fans, why not just stay home? Free movies are great, but even if you bought me ten tickets, I wouldn't go see Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

If Alex Maleev saw this thread he might get excited at first... "oh ****, it says is"

Agreed if you hate conventions I doubt a few extra perks would help the experience.Just don't go.

Oh please. I bet if we poll everybody you've ever met, at least one of them will call you a prick or an ass. The thread starter? Instead of calling him an a-hole to his face, instead comes to a message board and anonymously calls the guy a prick. That's pretty pricklike to me. Wussy Prick to boot.

My point is, he who is without dickishness may cast the first stone. :o

I'll cast the first stone and bring your glass house crashing down on you. :cmad:
