Alex Maleev is a big prick!

Something only a prick would do....possibly a *****e bag.

It was probably the interview thing that made him react that way, but saying what he said didn't seem that mean.

I met Alex Maleev before, he was pretty cool, but not very talkative. David Mack and Michael Turner were really nice too.

I'm going to keep it positive.

I met John Romita Jr. once. He was signing and drawing, but right when I got to the front of the line (or maybe one or two people ahead of me) he was only signing. I didn't have anything for him to sign but my sketch book.
I gave it to him, thinking he would only sign it. He said to the entire line "I'm only signing now." and drew me a quick face.
He didn't have to draw me anything, I was just expecting a signature. But he took a few minutes to draw me a Batmanesque face.

I also met Alex Ross a few times, and each time he was very nice when signing my book. Even when I asked him to draw something, add onto the superman symbol that he drew a few years earlier.

I met Mike Mignola, twice. I think I heard on a DVD that he doesn't think he is a nice guy, but he really is.
I talked to him about a Hellboy cartoon, well before the two animated DVDs. And I asked him to critique my art. He not only said he would, which I wasn't really expecting him to, but he really gave me some good critisism. Told me I need to work on spotting my shadows.
Said he used to be the same as me, drawing the character first then sort of guessing where the shadows would go next.
Told me to use tracing paper and a marker to spot the blacks.

So There are some really nice big time artists working out there.

Considering how easily it is to foster negativity on these topics sometimes, it actually is kind of good and refreshing to see so many posters, myself included, who gave examples of the opposite behavior to the one reported of Maleev, of "non prick" behavior. That class still exists in the industry and could possibly be a majority still. Upbeat for us Hypers. ;)

t actually doesn't surprise me that Maleev is a dick. I don't know why. Maybe because he draws ultra-serious, grim-&-gritty books all the time.

Nah I don't think thats it because we talked to Bill Sienkiewicz who draws some of the most twisted and disturbed things and he was a great guy to talk to. Very humble and personable and entertaining. He's one of the few creators I would pay to just sit and listen to. My joke questio nwas "Your known for having a very abstract style, how much would it cost to get a drawing of Burgees Meredith naked?" and he actually joked around and went into a detailed discription of how he would draw it that lasted about 10 minutes lol

IDrawDeadPeople, thats a great story about Waid lol

I'm going to a con in June and I have a few questions.Do I have to pay for artists to sign comics or for a sketch?I'm planning on meeting Doug Manhke,Clayton Henry,Tony Moore,Mark Brooks and Greg Horn. Thanks for the help.

Genrally your looking to pay about 20-100+ bucks for a sketch depending on the artist. If the con has a HERO charity booth try there. They usually charge 50 bucks and you get a cool sketch from the artists they have at the booth and the money goes to help comic creators. Definatly go meet Doug Manhke, he was a great guy to talk to and ask him about Spider-Man and the Scorpion. He's a big fan and told a funny story of how when he was a kid he wanted to build a tail like the Scorpion lol.

Also met Steve McNiven (my fav artist) and he was also really nice. I only brought a few comics for signing, but he chatted with me for a bit even after he was done. I told him how his Thor (clone) pic from Civil War was my fav of his pics and he actually flipped open a book on the spot and showed me his original pencil art for it. Great guy.

McNiven is a cool dude, I totally agree. Had a similer experience to yours but we talked about our love for drawing stretchy characters like Mr.Fantastic because no matter what mistakes you make, he dosent look wrong lol

This may be true but if it weren't for fan liking your stuff and spending money on it they wouldn't be making any money or have a job drawing/doing what they love. There is nothing saying that you have to be bright and chipper all the time but at the least you should be courteous to your fans.

These words are true. The fanbase is pretty much your life because without them you got squat. It isn't hard to put on a smile and be nice for a few minutes.

The Best thing to do in that case is to TELL THE GUY his behavior is outrageous.

You don't need to lose your cool or degrade yourself..but these guys are talented artists..and some times they need a dose of reality.

Say it right to their face and walk away..trust me you'll feel alot better.

The thread starter? Instead of calling him an a-hole to his face, instead comes to a message board and anonymously calls the guy a prick. That's pretty pricklike to me. Wussy Prick to boot.

No, I'm not a wuss for coming to discuss this with other fans. I've calmed down in my old age but I still have a temper and was basically told to keep it under control the two days. I have zero problem calling someone an ******* to their face wether they be a creator, actor or average joe. If I see him again at a con and he's rude again, would I shoot my mouth off and call him an arrogant a-hole?...You bet.

It was probably the interview thing that made him react that way, but saying what he said didn't seem that mean.

Thats the thing..camera is pointed to the ground, held by one hand, not on at all and it was the way and tone he said it in. Totally rude way of doing it.

But like I've said, I've met tons of folks and the majority has been great and the negatives have been few and far between.

At least you guys have plenty of shows to actually meet artists, creators etc.

The only decent con we have in the UK is the Bristol Comic Expo. I did meet Dave Gibbons, Barry Kitson and Walt Simonson last year though - all very nice, friendly too

Kind of odd when you consider how many great UK comic creators there are out there.

To be fair, comic companys probably don't want to pay all the money to go all the way over there for anything.

But several of those great UK creators still, like, live there. And I'm sure there must be fans and organizations willing to set the actual conventions up in the UK, just as there are here in the US.

I'd love to go to the Bristol show. Every time I hear reports on it it sounds like such a great time and hey...the guest list is pretty much always top notch and (packed with great U.K. talent...god theres sooo much :woot:)

Exactly... hell I recall reading interviews with Morrison, Quitely, Millar and Hitch and they said it was always funny they could just leave thier place and be at their respective partner's house 2 minutes later lol

(Except now Grant lives in L.A.)

In the early 70's I met C.C.Beck and got him to sign a Captain Marvel comic. He was friendly and chatting with everyone. He didn't charge for his signature, but that was along time ago before things got so mercenary.

I met Alex Ross a few years back....he was nice and friendly too. It was at the Superman Festival...he signed several things for free.

Surprised about Ross. I've gotten the impression over the years that the weight of his ego would crush lesser men.

Thats the thing about Ross though and it will mess up your mind. He is a big *****e in interviews and stuff but when he meets fans he is a very quiet, and plesant guy.

Maybe it was because it was at the Superman Festival (everyone knows how much he likes Supes) or as K.B. said the way he is away from interviews....but he was friendly when I saw him.

On his site, it says Grant Morrison spends fall/winter in LA, and spring/summer in Glasgow.

There's an idea. Someone should do a Glasgow Comic Con - get Morrison and Millar to come along! :woot:
