Sci-Fi Alien: Earth (Noah Hawley and Ridley Scott) | FX on HULU

This show got really schlocky towards the end but I still enjoyed it enough overall. The finale was probably my least favorite episode but it still had its moments.

Kirsch vs. Morrow was pretty cool although way too short and we finally got to see the flesh eating plant alien do something as ridiculous as it was.

I'm not really sure if I like the direction this seems to be going in with Wendy and The Xenos but I'd still watch a Season 2 because I'm at least curious to see where this goes and if the payoff will be worth it.

Also, T.Ocellus has easily been the most consistent thing in this show and I definitely want to see more of her going forward as well.

This got surprisingly schlocky the further it went on and I'm mixed honestly. I'd probably give the series a 7/10 and put it somewhere in the bottom half of all Alien stuff. There's at least 4 movies I'd take over it and I'd probably put Alien Earth on the same level as like Alien Resurrection where you get some cool things, some silly things and a messy tone.

Curious to see your rankings.

Probably something like this

Aliens
Alien
Alien 3
--
Alien Romulus
Alien Resurrection
Alien Earth
Prometheus
Alien Covenant
(Alien vs Predator)
--bottom of a ravine--
(AvP 2: Requiem)

Top 3 for me are definitely in a tier of their own. I go back and forth if I like Alien or Aliens the most but today I'll give the nod to the sequel, if nothing else it's probably the most enjoyable on a rewatch. Alien 3 for me is almost there but only really suffers from not having a definitive cut. (Still need to watch the legacy cut that came out).

Then there's a block that are all fairly close to each other. Romulus gets a negative for some of the blatant callbacks and references for me but still well crafted. Resurrection is dumb schlock but it's dumb fun. Alien Earth kinda in the middle, Prometheus and Covenant both look great but I get annoyed by the characters in them. AvP (the first one) is pretty fine. Nothing special but on a sunday afternoon it's something you can have on in the background. AvP 2 last by a decent margin. Some interesting ideas but poor execution.

I would have enjoyed the kids messing around with the staff more taking up the bulk of the episode.

The plant thing finally did something. Neat.

Eye Friend didn't get the body I was expecting. Sad.

New Xeno factoid: They enjoy eating crab...

I liked the finale. Overall my take on this season was good, not great. I'm down for more though.

Ocellus is the MVP of the season. The xenomorphs themselves are increasingly becoming abused with how we are seeing them. Too much out in the open too, makes the effects stand out negatively.

Okay, I can sort of see a case to be made for the first four (slightly disagree on Alien 3, but I can see why you would put it there), but in no universe is Alien: Resurection better than Prometheus or Alien: Earth.

Alien: Resurrection is dumb fun schlock, but its unintentionally dumb fun sclock. It would be like “The Room” of the Alien franchise if not for some of the acting and the production value. Prometheus, despite its various flaws and somewhat dumb character choices, still has some things to say and tries to go for something even if it isn’t all successful. Also, Michael Fassbender as David.

I was entertained by the show, but it is so very dumb. This really didn’t need to be a series.

And for all of Hawley’s talk about bringing back the Xenomorph to its original state ie Alien, he sure kind of botched that whole thing.

Team Eyeball.

Yeah Prometheus is pretty good and could probably be a spot or two higher. I don't necessarily disagree with things you say about Resurrection but I find Earth to be similarly schlocky. Main difference for me there is some nostalgic attachment to seeing Resurrection as a kid. :D

Curious why you preferred the start. I felt like the first 2-3 episodes were very choppy, with a lot of time wasted on Xeno boringness. Overall felt rushed.

Mostly because it was the introduction to the world and its characters, so it still felt fresh. Really it was the last two or three episodes, though, that the show started to falter to me. My biggest issue was how they would introduce a potential conflict, only to more or less move on from it with an abrupt conclusion. Nibs, whose memories were erased, for example, I think this might have been a compelling plot point, but then Wendy tells her exactly what happened the next episode, so the plot point became a dead end. It's over before it even started. The same with the penultimate episode, it ends things on such a cliffhanger, with Nibs being shot, Wendy screaming but then the finale has everyone back inside and secured, Nibs is okay, and it feels like we're missing a chunk of the episode.

There didn't seem to be any significant stakes by the end of the season, with so many characters left alive. Kirsh and Morrow, the show's two compelling characters, ultimately just fight each other with no real reason. Hermit is left alive, a character who really only exists because Wendy needs a brother. It felt like the show started pulling its punches, and a lot felt left in the air. But not in a way that makes me desperate for season 2.

Just a curiosity for fans of some of the first sci-fantasy thrillers. As you ponder S2, and the development of the T. Ocellus; consider the "Kaldane", creatures created by Edgar Rice Burroughs for The Chessmen of Mars 1922, part of the John Carter of Mars/Barsoom series.
latest

The "Kaldane" are sentient brain creatures that walk on spider-like legs, that breed replaceable humanoid and other host bodies, to plug themselves into, get around in, then transferring to new hosts to go on indefinitely.
They have hereditary memory, so the entire race shares the same memory, and they are essentialy trying to become as intelligent as possible.
Seem somewhat reminiscent of exactly what Kavalier seeks.
Amazingly created 1922, over 100 years ago, for it's time such a unique and unsettling idea.

Ironically Disney at one point secured the franchise, and has sense let it lapse into obscurity.
