Loeb wrote the 12 part arc Hush, introducing the character Hush (Thomas Elliot) and tying him into the Bat-family as childhood friend of Bruce who hated him...for some of the dumbest reasons you can give a villain:
The Elliots were billionaires. When Tommy was little, he was a money-hungry, sociopath. He cut the brake lines to his parents car so they would die while driving, leaving this little boy with their fortune. Except when the accident happened, Bruce's dad saved his mom via surgery, so Tommy, while getting away with murder/attempted murder, had his plans foiled. So he hated Bruce for his father saving his mother's life.
Really? That's why Tommy would go on to be a super-villain? To hate Bruce? I mean, didn't Tommy still have access to his family's money, while a child and afterwards? He literally lived a life as
billionaire kid even before he tried to assassinate his folks...I'm not buying this. And then he grows into a successful surgeon who has his fair share of beautiful women...but because his murder plot was partially foiled, he becomes a Batman villain??
This isn't the retcon part...
The retcon is that Paul Dini later gave us Heart of Hush, and in this much smaller arc, he went back and gave us
A COMPELLING HISTORY of Tommy Elliot that made more sense to how he would grow into the resentful Hush:
Tommy was a good boy and good friend of Bruce's in their childhood. His parents were sh&%. His dad verbally abused him, possibly molested him, and his mother, afraid that the patriarch would cut them off from his fortunes (since Tommy's mom married into the dad's fortune), she never did anything about these abuses, and told Tommy it was worth it, anything's worth it for money.
His hatred for his parents came from how f***ed up they were to him.
His hatred for Bruce came from how Tommy's mother always favored Bruce over her own son, no matter what Tommy did.
His obsession for money was taught to him by his mother.
This works. And this is a retcon I can get behind. But because this tournament is about retcons that SUCK, this couldn't make the game.
Just go read Heart of Hush and tell me its not a better motivation story for Hush than that over-glorified 12-part Loeb garbage.
