BvS All Things Batman v Superman: An Open Discussion - - - - - - Part 113

I find it interesting that so many people in the media were talking about which company, DC or Marvel, were going to have the first black lead in a CBM in the "Modern" Superhero movie era, especially after the Cyborg movie and the Black Panther movie announcement. It looks like Suicide Squad will be the first to that to that with Will Smith.

I always felt that debate sometime became trivial due to the fact people made it out to be game almost, like it became about who will do it first, picking sides between companies. It some times felt like the debate moved from discussing the real big problem of the lack of diversity in CBMs and in movies in general, to becoming "lets do it so we can do it before the other company does", which the wrong way to go about it.

That is why I like the casting of Will Smith as Deadshot so much, it never seemed like his name was in the discussion because they want to one up marvel for a black lead but rather because he is a major star and he they thought he would be perfect to lead this film, in Warner Bros eyes at least. Similar to Jason Momoa as Aquaman, I never felt they went out of there way to cast a minority just to cast one. It felt natural. WB/DC was like "Who would make a badass Aquaman?" And Jason Momoa was at the top of that list, not because they needed to fill a quota of non-white actors but because they thought he would be badass in the part.

What I am saying is, I like the fact it seems that WB/DC seems to be looking at the who are best candidates for the each role and are casting minorities not because they need diversity but because they think they are right for the role. Sorry for the rant, I just like what I am seeing so far.:woot:

Lol, what? Exactly what are you basing this off of? You have no reason to believe either company is doing it just to fill a requirement...What makes you think DC is "choosing the best actor for the role" while Marvel isn't?

Marvel did it way back in 2011, when they cast a black actor for a pretty darn white character.

And let's not forget Nick Fury, who is as major as any core Avenger.

Sorry, it just seems like you're pulling stuff out of thin air to trash the rival company. You should also note that Black Panther will be in Civil War, which comes out before SS...so you're wrong about Smith being the first (natural :whatever:) black lead to star as well.

You've gotta love fanboys. If you don't make a Black Panther movie before the main Avengers, you're accused of white-washing and being racist, blah blah. When you do make a solo with a black lead, you're apparently only doing it to do it "meet a quota", while DC is totally "natural". What a joke.

They sure generate hype for me :woot:

Marvel is on fire and if Strange is as good as their 2014 movies (TWS, GoTG), which I'm confident it will be, then I'm super-hyped. Marvel hasn't failed yet when it comes to casting, imo, so I'm not worried about that.

The original Bourne movies are some of my favorite movies ever, so Greengrass and Damon coming back is huge to me.

If X-Men: Apocalypse is even close to First Class and DOFP, I'm in. I might even be more excited for that over BvS....if it wasn't for Batman. :batman:

Deadpool has a lot to prove and it could easily turn out to be garbage, but if they get Deadpool right it'll be one hell of a fun ride.

All of these characters and movies are just more appealing to me than Suicide Squad. SS will be the first villain-centric CBM and I'm not yet sure if I'll like it. I highly doubt Sinister Six will be any good.

Yeah, I'd say you'll see hype for whatever you feel hype for. It's impossible not to see it for BVS when you visit these boards every day. I'm sure it's the same at other forums. And judging from how well the non-superhero action movies like Bourne or the Fast and Furious films do, I'd imagine the hype is also there, just less visibly.

Hal Jordan is one of the better DC characters, and an underrated one.
When we're not talking about the Justice League War version, or anything from the post reboot version of him.
I haven't read it but have seen some stuff from it. Love Jim's art but still Frank just ugh.

Gotta give Frank props, wrote this great scene.

You can't look at All Star Batman & Robin and call Hal the only prick.
That story is about Batprick and Robin, the Prick Wonder.
Antagonized by the Justice Pricks.

Frank Miller's insane. Collaborating with the guy must be quite an experience.

You do realize that just because the film has the same title as the book it doesn't mean its going to follow it word for word and plot by plot right? Its blatantly obvious they weren't completely adapting Brubakers book. Same goes for AoU and Civil War. But hey to each his own.

Very few CBM's followed their story lines to the letter

I'm not asking for a direct adaptation. If they're going to use the idea and title from a comic, then they should explore it in the movie's plot rather than graze over it. Cap:TWS was really about SHIELD. It didn't get into Cap's relationship with Bucky. So basically they threw in Winter soldier to have a baddie and to market the movie. Some fans are okay with that, but I want more meaty story-telling. X-Men: First Class wasn't like the comic version with the same title but the plot still stuck to the idea of the first X-Men team within their universe and showed how it formed in the movie's plot. That way it lived up to the title and material.

It seems like Marvel tends to tip toe around their stories and then move onto the next movie. They don't show the story of the developments. Change just happens. Banner saying he can control Hulk, Tony revealing he has PTSD, SHIELD the most hi-tech and resourceful government agency has been unknowingly hijacked for decades. Those are stories in themselves. That's what I mean about their lack of commitment to the Winter Soldier storyline. There's a bigger story about Steve and Bucky's relationship, and Bucky turning into a twisted version of the super soldier that wasn't fully addressed.

The Winter Soldier had plenty of meat. It just wasn't the meat you wanted.

Yup, I like my meat lean with not a lot of fat.
