Definitely. And it transcended that specific moment with the family that Zod is trying fry with his heat vision, by the way. Zod outright stated that he was going to kill everyone on the planet. If this is a Superman that lives in our real world he was obviously not going to find some goofy Silver Age comic book way to stop Zod that avoids killing him.

And in my opinion, when Superman kills Zod, the myth and archetype of Superman is reborn into our real world from the "apple pie and Chevrolet" world into which Superman of the past existed.
