Am I the only one who liked DAD?

Die Another Day, while much inferior to Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies, was a vast improvement on The World Is Not Enough, which I rank as probably the worst Bond movie ever (rivaled only by For Your Eyes Only).

Why do you say this to me, when you know I will kill you for it?

Quite the opposite, Die Another Day is one of the most successful Bond movies ever. It made $431,971,116 worldwide, second only to Die Another Day in the unajusted box office stakes.

BO wise, maybe, but creatively wise, it nearly sunked the franchise. And let's not forget that Bond became a joke after that. I remember the audience in the theater loving it...as something big, loud and dumb.

'Sunked'?

Sure it was a creative low point, but the series was always going to continue...

I agree that's a shame. Bond should be big, loud and smarter than your average blockbuster.

Well, I think even Purvis and Wade (correct me if I'm wrong) said after DAD that they were running out of ideas. The series was sure ridiculed by many, and even appreciated for it's pure stupidity by average viewers. It was in a creativity and credibility void that could have destroyed it.

Destroyed it how exactly? You mean if there was another movie (or two) in the same manner as DAD, they would have eventually flopped?

The first 15 minutes up until Bonds release was great. I felt, once Berry was introduced the movie fell into typical hollywood shmuck. There's no way a person who had been repeatedly tortured for a year plus, would 1) have gained or maintained the same weight and 2) not been psychologically traumatized by it. 'M' touched on it by saying she was sending Bond to the Falkland Islands for re-evaulation because ppl that have been through that are typically mentally/physically ****ed up, but that storyline fell apart. DAD had great petential.

The Madonna song put the final nail in the coffin for me. Even Tamahori says in the commentary that he didn't like the song, yet he uses it.

I don't think Tamahori had any choice. Maybe the deal was done with Madonna before he even came aboard. Even if not, it's Madonna.

I agree that it certainly had plot holes, but IMO it was still an enjoyable film.

I enjoy every Bond movie in theaters.

It's when I get it on DVD when I start realizing if it sucks or not.

And DAD was garbage.

I don't think the franchise could have survived another DAD. Yes, another like it could have flopped (DAD was financially successful because it was a Bond movie, not because of the movie tiself). It is sure that the franchise was in a creative void. They were talking about a spin off series with jinx for god's sake! Probably the most hated Bond girl!

Anyway, one has to wonder where could they go following the DAD route? Or, if DAD's profits were so promessing for the franchise, why did they decide to change the diametrically opposed approach with CR?

DAD was financially successful because it was a Bond movie, not because of the movie tiself

So why is it the second most succesful Bond movie ever? Why did it make much more than some of the other Bond entries that are much better movies (The Living Daylights, for example)?

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but if you take into account inflation, isn't Thunderball the most successful movie of the franchise, and there are others more successful than DAD, including CR? That it was financially successful, I cannot deny it. But I doubt it was for its own qualities, but more due to circumstantial reasons, and to its belonging to the franchise. And I will stand by my point: it was puting the franchise at very serious risk. Why would they take the very opposite route with CR if DAD was promessing so well? Why was it derided by critics and fans? There is success, and there is enduring success.

Yeah, even adjusted for inflation DAD is still the sixth most succesful ever (before it are CR, Thunderball, Goldfinger, YOLT and FRWL).

I don't believe EON ever intended to make two films in a row in the style of DAD. All the last seven Bond movies have been different in style to their predecessor (sp?) largely because of different directors. Tamohori was only signed on for DAD, and as it was the 40th anniversary of Bond, it was intended as an over-the-top celebration of the series. It was just the style for that particular movie.

One of DAD biggest flaws was that they tried to tamper with the formula too much. They tried to make Berry Bonds equal; give Bond a run for his money, etc. They did an awesome job (imo) balancing the 'Bond's equal' aspect with Michelle Yeoh in TND, but with DAD they just went overboard. We didn't pay money to see a Bond flick, where Bonds gets shown up by his co-star. Blade:Trinity made the same mistake. They tried to give Biel a spin off Nightstalkers movie by trying to make her Blade's equal, and that like DAD, back-fired on them. Spin-offs are fine and dandy, but don't **** over the main-star of the movie while doing it.

Absolutely. Plus, by the time we had Harry Berry come along pretending she could kick ass, we'd already seen Michelle Yeoh, who really can kick it. Just made Jinx even more unconvincing.

I was never a big fan of Way Lin, but at least Michelle Yeoh was a convincing tough chick. Halle Berry looked out of place for two hours. A spin off can work only if the character is different enough from the one of the original series. If he isn't, why bother?

Tamohori was probably too busy pondering over which dress he was going to wear for a heavy night on the town after each days shooting, to be concerned over DAD's quality.

:D

And let the Tamahori jokes......commence. :woot:

Die Another Day is the only Bond movie where the director himself auditioned to be the Bond girl.
