Personally, I couldn't care less about what critics say here - since, from what I hear, it seems like they're comparing it to Disney rather than Kipling's book. Any critic who compares it to Disney rather than to Kipling's book, I really can't take that seriously. Plus, the REAL 'Jungle Book' is surprising/jarring at first because of how different it actually is - my only hope is that this film lives up to the real 'Jungle Book.'

Note: I like Disney's takes, I loved Disney's new film, but yeah - I consider the original book to be the real one.

Adding: christ, I just had a gander at some of the reviews - complaining about it being gritty, not-for-the-kids/"new"-elements (???) - read the bloody book why don't yah? Yeah, I need to judge this one by myself - has any review accurately reviewed it as what it is (Kipling's) rather than what they want it to be (Disney's)?

From the trailer it looks less kid friendly than the Disney 2015 version.

Random comment, it still feels "odd" to hear ( again ) Kaa with a female voice like in the 2015 film, I grew up with the 1967 animated film ( French dubbing ) and his voice is still fresh in my head, old conditioning is hard to get rid of :)

Are you reading the reviews or the little blurb on RT? Because it is less about it not being like the Disney film in terms of tone, but in terms of quality. As the complaint seems to be with how the film is put together. That even with its tone, it doesn't really have its own identity, and it is simply a weak film, with weak narrative thrust.

Yeah I’m reading the reviews. Particularly looked at the negative ones and they’re all way too hyper focused on comparing it to the Disney film. Which hey, if that’s what you want - power to you, but as someone who cares about Kipling and not the Disney film here those reviews do absolutely nothing for me.

ADDING: Saw the IGN one which I’d say is more on track. The others, as said, read like they wanted a family film (‘The Wrap’ being the worst one of the bunch).

The first movie I ever watched with my dad at the cinema was the 1967 version (Swedish dubbing lol), although it was some kinda rerun probably around 1971-72. And of course I had the Jungle Book LP with some of the episodes and songs from the movie.

I highly regret not going to the cinema in the late 80s when they made a great deal of showing this film all over the country again. Lots of my friends did, but stupid me.. not. I've seen it in recent years with original English speaking voice actors, but it can never be the same as that child experience 40+ years ago.

Of course now, I can't stand watching animated films dubbed in my language, that's way too annoying lol.

I'm actually more looking forward to getting around to watching this than whatever Marvel may or may not be doing in a few hours. Now if only Netflix would just recognize that it is indeed Dec. 7th where I am...

Initial reaction having just seen it: I thought it was solid. I think Rohan Chand did a good job and he sold me more so than Neel Sethi did, although part of it might just be from having more emotional material to work with. The kid gets put through a lot in this physically and emotionally, and Chand plays the role fairly believably. (Though I do think they milk the sad parts a little too much in certain sections.) There's some decent amount of world-building too, which I think is pulled straight from the book. There's a lot of references that I think those familiar with the literary version will get and appreciate, but if you're not then it might come across as really dense, perhaps unnecessarily so. I liked the sound mixing too, especially with blending the actors' vocal intonations with the underlying sounds of the animals they're portraying; for comparison, I found myself constantly being annoyed by the lack of said blending in the Disney version.

Main cons for me were the creature design (still can't get over those wolves and Baloo to some extent) and uneven pacing. The first half or so is fairly dense and a lot happens, then the mid-section slows down a lot for certain scenes before the ending kinda just happens. I don't think it's a mess though; I'm inclined to think the "fear" on Warner Bros. part in putting it on Netflix wasn't so much that they thought it was a bad movie but that it was just not going to find the right audience to make enough money in theaters given how much the general public is familiar with (and probably preferential to) the Disney version, especially the newest one.

My Dad and I just watch this. I'd say it's everything I wanted and more. I think the character Bhoot could have been developed better. But, other than that I liked it a lot and prefer this to the Disney film. Then again, I also prefer the original book to the original Disney film.

Just finished it and I enjoyed it for the most part. Sure the graphics werent the strongest but it is so different from Disneys Jungle Book that it stood on its own. I was shocked that they'd have Mowgli come face2face with one of his friends who is dead and used as trophy.

I gave it a solid 5. I liked it overall, but the CGI was atrocious and I expect way better from WETA. I also thought aside from Christian Bale, a lot of the voice actors were over the top.

Gonna be checking this out this weekend. Love Disney’s remake. Interested in this just for the different take the story has.

I don't have Netflix, but I have to buy it so I can watch this.

Watched this last night and I can honestly say I enjoyed it quite a bit. I really liked the fact that it was so much darker, and I even thought the kid who played Mowgli this time around was great and way better than the kid in Favreau's film. I agree though the the CGI does look pretty bad at times, and while the voice acting was solid overall Cate Blanchett as Kaa was kind of weak and the stuff with the hunter went nowhere.

7/10

Really enjoyed it but, my God, .........Bhoot - just no need for that.

Yeah that was traumatic.

That was pretty horrific stuff indeed. No way this movie would have done well with a theatrical release IMO, but I kind of appreciate Serkis not shying away from stuff like that. Parents would have probably started an uproar though lol.

Issa plot twist.

Ha, Andy Serkis is a savage too; his actual son played Bhoot.

Imo, I like this better than Disney's version. But that Bhoot arc is gonna kill the entire kid-friendly demographic, it was probably a good idea it went on Netflix.
