Ant-Man and The Wasp Ant-Man and the Wasp - Box Office Discussion

Anyone knows when Ant-Man 2 opens in China ?

The original did 105,4 mil there so i expect at least 100 mil for the sequel as well.
It will probably do 115-140 mil.

So 525-575 mil WW total is looking good. I dont know about 600+ mil though.

Probably late August or September. We should hear somethng after the July blackout period ends.

Well, I was one of those X-Men comic buying fans that bought a ticket to Martin Lawerence's "Big Momma's House" just to see the first trailer for X-Men that was attached back in 2000. Pre-Internet drop days. Remains the only movie that I have paid to see then walked out after the trailers.

Why I bring this up here is that I have to remind myself to not get jaded in this golden era of comic book films. I think that's what is holding back a good film like Ant-Man and the Wasp at the box office. Fans liked it a lot but aren't running back to watch it more than once in a crowded summer. Seen so much greatness since X-Men in 2000 that they are growing complacent.

Shame because a movie this good deserves HUGE bucks. I honestly enjoyed this movie more than Black Panther.

I agree. But while I like Payton Reed a lot and he's an actual geek about comic books, I won't mind if they give it to somebody else to "shake things up". No Marvel trilogy ever had just one director who stayed for all three movies anyway; Iron Man, Capt. America, Thor, and Avengers all changed hands and all benefited from such a move. A director like Taika could give the next movie a fresh angle and a new approach that can make it more interesting to watch, which will only help not hurt the box office.

And I agree with this. Iron Man 3 didn't require a change in the formula to make a billion. But the other 3 - Captain America, Thor, and Avengers - their threequels all were pretty dramatically different from their previous movies. I think Thor in particular wouldn't have been worth a threequel unless they really "shook things up" as you say. Likewise I think Antman won't be worth a threequel unless it is significantly different from the first two. I also think they'll wait 4 years to do it (like Thor), rather than the 2-3 years the other franchises took.

Going to the theaters by itself isn't exactly a cheap thing to do nowadays in addition to there just being more films, and perhaps it's just me looking at this from an economic standpoint, but I don't see the need to watch a film more than once in a theater. I got the experience I needed. Why spend money on it again when that could go to something infinitely more worthwhile?

Because people here are expecting it to make over $500 billion dollars...

Sigh

AMATW will make at least $190 million and as much as $210 Million. It’s profitabke and that’s all that matters. As long as it is profitable, we will see a third movie. And I believe that’s what most of us here want to see. An even better movie, possibly the best entry in the Ant Man franchise that could potentially have cameos from the Hulk and Fantastic Four!

agreed its going to turn a profit and outgross the 1st one thats all that matters

I think it depends on the person. Most movies I don't care to see more than once and I use my movie pass for that first viewing. MCU movies I try to see 2-3 times(IWs was different went 7 times). I always go on the opening Thursday and then I go again a few days after, with my last viewing being before it is out of theaters. Only the person themselves can decide if it is infinitely worthwhile no one else.

When does/did this release in China?

Can’t believe it’s still not out here. Feels like old news now.

Such nonsense -- I'm pretty sure the World Cup had an exact schedule. It should have opened as soon as the Cup was over.

Finally got to see it tonight; loved it. A lot more fun than I expected.

Deadline’s projecting $15.6 million for the weekend, which would take it over the 164 mark. So basically right on schedule. Should be within a couple million of the original’s total run after next weekend.

Nice. Let's hope it crosses 200 by a sizeable margin. This film has earned it. Hope it blows up in China too like no others business!

if its over 200mill im happy doesnt have to be sizable 200mill domestic and 550 or more worldwide is more than the first film

Day 15 multipliers (cume divided by first weekend):
Ant-Man and the Wasp: 2.02 (with Friday estimate, the highest Day 15 MCU sequel multiplier)
Captain America: Civil War: 1.94 (finished with 2.73, the highest MCU sequel multiplier to date)
Spider-Man: Homecoming: 2.02 (finished with a 2.86 multiplier)
Ant-Man: 2.15 (finished with a 3.15 multiplier)

The average MCU sequel multiplier is 2.5.

If it crosses the 200 mil mark Domestically it wont be by much.

It looks like a 200-205 mil finish to me.
OS looks like 150 mil minimum left.

China will do 90-150 mil.
Rest of OS still has 50-80 mil left in the tank.

So 500 mil WW is a 100%.

China will be the deciding factor for the 600 mil mark.

Yeah, 2 more weeks for us here in the UK.

I feel like by the time I've seen it and come here on the HYPE in excitement, everyone will have moved on :(

Official estimate is $16,126,000, -44.6% from last weekend. Really good 3rd weekend hold, better than the first Ant-Man and Homecoming's 3rd weekend holds.

Makes $200M+ look likely. Out of the previous 19 MCU films, only 4 had a 3rd weekend multiplier low enough to make it end up under $200M. (Those 4 are The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 3, Civil War and Infinity War).

Homecoming's 3rd weekend multiplier would even get it to $224.7M. I doubt it'll go that high though since Homecoming had really strong late legs(3rd best 3rd weekend multiplier in the MCU) and AM&tW is also facing Mission Impossible next weekend, but it does show that at least passing $200M doesn't look far fetched at all at this point.

Great hold. Might actually pass the first film’s take next weekend.

Indonesia - $9.7M

^South Korea really stands out on that list. The first one made just over $20M there so that's a big improvement.

The other one that really stands out is India; the first one only made a little over $1.6M there.

Yeah, I'd be very surprised if it didn't.

Needs $15.6M more in the next 7 days after making $31.5M in the last 7 days. So it'd have to drop over 50% week on week to fall short by next weekend.

Looks to me that AntMan 2 will outgross the original's WW gross by about 10%.

Keep the budget at the same level for the 3rd movie and its golden.

A succesful trilogy critically and commercially.

Way to go SK and India! More excellent numbers. Germany and Hungary on deck next weekend.
