Ant-Man and The Wasp Ant-Man and the Wasp - Box Office Discussion

Another nice weekend. This thing has gotta have enough to reach 225 right? Sure hope so.

Maaaybe. I can see 220 without squinting too much but beyond that I’m not sure how far it goes. Labor Day holiday bump could be key.

All that said, my estimates for most movies this year have turned out to be conservative, so it wouldn’t surprise me if I’m underestimating this one too!

Awesome. I didn't even bother to think about any upcoming holiday added into the equation. Well, the sooner it comes the better for this movie's sake. Lol. Let's hope it continues to have solid weekdays as well.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP carried off another $17M worldwide this weekend, $426M total.

Dom/OS breakdown:

Domestic: $195,469,435 45.9%
+ Foreign: $230,800,000 54.1%
= Worldwide: $426,269,435

Not bad for the flavor of the week

Was it this weekend it was seeing its UK release and such?

Yup. Here’s the current OS breakdown from Deadline:

In their 5th weekend Ant-Man And The Wasp scurried to another $11.2M in 47 markets. The international cume is now $230.8M for $426.3M worldwide. The movie also got its China date this week which is teed up for August 24.

The UK gave the insects a No. 2 welcome (No. 1 with previews) at $6.5M to debut ahead of the original film. Notable holds include Israel (-10%), South Africa (-29%), Belgium (-31%), Denmark (-32%), Sweden (-33%), Germany (-44%), Singapore (-44%), Czech Republic (-45%), Australia (-45%), France (-46%) and Austria (-46%).

Korea leads play with $42.4M to date, followed by Mexico ($14.8M), Australia ($13.9M), Russia ($12.7M) and Brazil ($12.5M). Before China buzzes aboard, Italy opens August 14. Japan goes August 31.

Ant-Man opened at 6.2 in the UK on the way to a bit more than 25. So at first blush the sequel looks headed to similar numbers there.

The overseas total will start looking much healthier when these last few big markets have been open for a few weeks.

Hey they’d look a lot healthier now if you Brits could peel your eyes away from Mama flippin’ Mia! Seriously, $52 million, up 50% over the original at the same point right now? What’s up with that? :loco:

Yeah, the first one did megabucks here. I didn’t even know the sequel was out lol, but there must be a lot of people going, probably just not many in my social circle. I think more of the potential Ant Man watchers (probably less overlap with MM2), are going to be distracted by the likes of MI:6. AM feels a bit like old news now here. :(

Yeah, I think Disney should have released it earlier, World Cup or no.

Or just released it everywhere later.

It is strange here in the UK.

Usually with a new MCU release ( or comic book release in general) there’s a certain hype you can feel with it.

It just isn’t here with AMATW. I think delaying it for the World Cup has probably hurt it, but I can’t knock the business decision, I think it probably made sense on paper.

Yep, I am also here in the UK and noticed this too during my screening on Saturday.

There is usually huge hype and full viewings for MCU flicks, but during my viewing the screen was less than half full.

I think pushing it back because of the Cup really hurt its momentum. The Cup ended 3 weeks ago anyway so it could have been released in July.

Mamma Mia is killing it here as expected and Mission Impossible is pulling in the action crowd.

Too much competition, a month long delay and a smaller scale story leaves Ant-Man and the Wasp in an unfortunate position. I doubt it does gangbuster business here. In my local cinemas, it's already playing on the smaller screens with half-full attendance.

I'll cosign that too. I'm an MCU fan much like everyone else here, but I almost forgot it was getting released. I think the delay REALLY killed the hype. The timing of the release didn't help either.

The Antman franchise is lower stakes, and shouldn't be released during summer. I feel it's perfect for a Jan-March release where there is no competition.

I dont think 225 mil is possible.

215-220 mil is where its going which is great.

I saw it today at a near empty mid day screening. It's weird because it is summer holidays in the UK and plenty of kids were about but none of them were at my Ant-Man & Wasp screening. Seemed like most kids were going to see Teen Titans or The Incredibles 2 or Hotel Transylvania

I think the long delay may of dented some hype

The actual for the weekend is $6,364,500(-27.4%). Very strong hold. Even the lowest 5th weekend multiplier in the MCU gets it to $209M+ domestic now. And even $220M+ is possible if it has great late legs like the first Ant-Man and Spider-Man: Homecoming did.

OS it made another $11,710,002 as it opened in the UK this weekend. We still have Italy, Portugal, China and Japan to go as well.

Exact totals after Sunday:

Domestic: $195,645,935
+ Foreign: $231,325,476
= Worldwide: $426,971,411

I think Disney will greenlight a 3rd movie considering that 600+ mil WW is in the bag.

I think they'll do a third, keep the budget way down, and include an Avenger guest star... possibly Banner/Hulk to draw in the crowds a little more.

Plus, I would avoid another Summer release date.

Dunno if we need a third. Let ant man and the wasp be in the avengers and give another character a chance.

The Ant-Man movie budgets are already among some Marvel's lowest. Hulk is a CGI character so would probably add to the movies budget a bit. Might be cool if they could get a cameo from RDJ's Stark. I think seeing him and Hank finally interact would be cool.

I think if they do a third movie then it should be a spring release.

They should use some more popular villains. Yellowjacket and Ghost were ok but not really buzz generating villains. Personally I think they should go all out with A.I.M as villains. Yellow beekeeper suits, giant mechs, hi-tech guns, jets, ect. The full works. Go crazy science fiction with it.
