Wow! Cool, are you a Ninja Dude or are you "gangsta". Fighting on "da street" must mean you're tough!!!!

Man, I'm an expert street fighter. Nobody can touch my moves. My fist is legendary!!!

My son (five years old) just started in Shotokan Karate last month. He seems to really be enjoying it. I did want to put him in a Kung Fu class (since he's taking Chinese at school), but I couldn't find one near my house that I liked.

when I was a kid I took Isshinryu Karate for a bit.

i took an introductory course in american freestyle karate once
i'm more a frustrated martial artist than anything else

People on "the street" tend to use guns now. We gave up on the whole street fighting thing back when we invented the knife.

Don't take what I said the wrong way, it was primarily in jest. However, I feel this needs to be covered. I am no "master", but Boxing I met my fair share of shadey characters. Basically, martial arts, Boxing, ancient weapons are fun, but don't get the mentality they are for real life application. The world is a scary place, and flying fists of fury don't cut it anymore. Street fights are very real, and the best way to stay safe on the street is to avoid such altercations. Even if you do hit them, or get them on the ground they could still pull a weapon. Their injured pride will be far less than your injury or death.

Fighting is a last resort, and all you will really have time for is to be quick on your feet.

So yes martial arts is fun, and certainly helps you stay alert and know "something" for if you get in a fight. But you're much better off simply avoiding it.

I study/teach multiple styles etc. I have a forte for weaponary though...

Your 5-year-old is taking Chinese? Man, I couldn't read English at that age.

I'm a white belt in Judo. I took a class for about 2 months, but quit after my pants kept getting ripped. It's like everytime I got thrown, I flailed my legs too much and shredded my pants apart. I went through 2 gi and a couple of sewing jobs before I just quit.

On the plus side, I eventually learned how to fall with the best of 'em.

I do army combatives, which is really just a mix of brazilian jiu jitsu and greco roman wrestling. im pretty good at it, ive beaten a few people who later came up to me and told me no one has ever beaten them before.

Dont expect much replies,America is fat and lazy today.

As for myself,i know Russian Sambo[Russian Martial Arts] and Boxing.Teached to me by my grandfather.

I took tae kwan do, judo, and jujitsu at age 14.
I quit after a few months and took ji kun do at age 15.
After a few weeks of that I quit martial arts all together.
I'm just to lazy to apply myself.

He can't read English either (he mostly just recognizes words). The Chinese teacher is having them learn simple words and phrases. He won't start learning to write it until he's in third or fourth grade.

I've practiced or participated in a few styles in the past:

Boxing, Capoeira, Escrima, Fencing (Regular & Combat à la florentine), Hapkido, Krav Maga, Wrestling, and when I was younger the Northern Shaolin Style.

There are other styles I have not practiced, but have read up a bit on with the idea of possibly pursuing at some point.

I boxed and wrestled in the military and fenced in college.

Stereotypes and generalizations are awesome!

I had some instruction in American Karate and Tae Kwan Do when I was younger, and I plan on taking Judo classes (hopefully) in the near future.
