I have an interview there at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning, they're interviewing me for the "Media" department (Movies, Games, CD's, etc.). I've heard they play pretty well, and I don't mind customer service jobs (I've worked at both GameStop and FYE in the past).

I was just wondering if anyone on here knows what it's like to work their. Any thoughts/suggestion?

youre gonna work at the best buy in savannah? sweet! hook me up with free movies dude, i go there all the time

I wanted to work there, but they never called me back. I guess they'll miss out on a good salesman.

Yeah, the one out on Abercorn. I'll let you know if I get the job, but I try to keep it pretty ethical when I work, because I've seen bad reviews come back to bite people in the ass.

All I gotta say is...good luck. I've been in that dept for 3 years or so, and was glad to get out. The company has been wiping out labor for awhile, so you're gonna ALWAYS be busy with helping customers and putting crap loads of product out. It never ends. Its always bad around the holidays and it will be worse this year since the company is trying to save money by skimping. You may enjoy the job, but I didn't.

At out store, most of the time I worked by myself. The media department is roughly 1/3 to 1/4 the size of the total store, and one person is not enough to cover movies, music, video games, software, and now audio products. Not only do you have to use a ridiculous set of 'says and dos', but you have to keep the department organized, keep prices up to date, watch for people stealing (rap aisle is terrible, expect a theft almost daily), put out products, and other crap like that.

If someone is looking at a movie and is just browsing, you're supposed to basically invade their privacy and try to sell them credit cards, accessories, other movies, and even try to sell them a HOME THEATER SYSTEM! Yes. I've come to where all I do is whatever non-customer tasks there are to do, i.e. putting crap up. I NEVER go to customers, they always come to me if they need help. I answer their questions but I never try to sell them anything else unless they ask.

I could tell you more, but I hate thinking about it.

alcohol isnt a drug. so you should be set. and it should only be in your body for like 5 hours per every .02.....

Any idea how much of that was corporate mandated?

Not sure what you mean. If you mean what you're supposed to sell to customers, ALL of it is mandatory. If a customer tells you they're just looking, you're supposed to find a way to get around that and sell them something. No one does it though because its so ridiculous. Supervisors will do a little evaluation on you but even ours forges it.

Oh, and expect inconsistent hours. They'll drive you crazy. You may work till 10 or 11 pm or even later during the holidays then you may have to come in at 6 am or earlier the next day. They did that to me so many times owwww it made me soooo angry :cmad:

Yeah, but I'm under 21, and according to what I read, they test for srugs and alcohol. Thanks for the info.

I mean how much of it was company policy and how much of it was just how the manager(s) ran the store?

I worked in the "Warehouse" portion of Best Buy in college, it was pretty much bs, unloading trucks, helping people get 32" tvs into their 2-door cars, chasing down carts. I worked during the summer and fall, then saw my schedule after Thanksgiving go up from 10-15 hours per week to around 30-40, finals were coming up, so I decided to quit and just stopped showing up. There weren't too happy with me when I showed up for my last check after not coming to work for a week, didn't care though, it was a college job, I was graduating and moving back home and had plenty of other, better references. Don't worry about the drug test, just don't drink the night before. As for the sales part, of course they want you to sell things like credit cards, accessories and other stuff to the customer who's just buying a CD or DVD, they don't make any money off CDs, DVDs and Video Games, that's why the prices are so low, they get you in to buy that and try to sell you something they'll actually make money off of.

my neighbors kid got a job there in the the same department I believe. Unfortunately about a week into it, he got busted nailing his girlfriend in the employee bathroom and was let go...
