Are there cgi villains that are actually good?

There's an argument online that cgi villains like Thanos or steppenwolf don't work because they lack the human element. I mean, if you look at the best ones like magneto, joker and Hela they're all more human based.

Can you think of any good cgi villains? I suppose King Kong/Godzilla counts but let's keep it as the main villain (so not the goon or fighting a Sharknado or whatever)

CGI is just a tool. Steppy sucks not because he's CGI, but because he's poorly written and executed. As opposite to Davy Jones, Koba, Gollum and, look like, Thanos and Snoke.

See that's a good example of what not to do I reckon with Davy Jones. I don't think he had the impact that barbossa did despite looking cooler.

Davy doesn't beat Barbossa but he was pretty great in Dead Man's Chest, IMO.

I'd agree with this.

If I'm feeling generous I'd also add Ultron. He wasn't used to his full potential but it was a great design, even if it deviated from the comics a bit.

Spader made Ultron work, Whedon gave him decent lines but it was hit or miss.

My fear for Thanos is that after the initial catharsis that comes with a release from six years of build up (Thanos is finally DOING SOMETHING! And look he punched Iron Man!) that he will come off as a better variation on Steppenwolf and Apocalypse. By that I mean, a villain who wants to take over/destroy the world and remake it in his own image is very cartoonish. While I know Thanos has his roots for Jack Kirby in fascism, the way it is usually depicted in comics does not come off that way in live-action. It can play thin.

However, I suspect Feige is aware of this and will have hopefully adjusted accordingly.

T-1000 in T2. Literally not human, but still a great villain. And sometimes those 1-dimensional villains in sci-fi or horror movies, which aren't always human, are pretty damn effective within the context of the movie. Plenty of horror movies come to mind there.

Steppenwolf should have been basically "human" and I don't get why he became a CGI character at all—I mean, he's basically a dude with a heavy 'stache and glowing red eyes. Ciaran Hinds basically already had the look (sans 'stache) and they only needed to use CG for his eyes. What was the flippin' point of adding all that unnecessary CG to his face?

I figure you probably mean Megatron in the Bayformers movies, but that makes me think of the CG-animated Transformers Prime series, which had a lot of great Decepticon characters. Not just Megatron but also Starscream, Soundwave, Airachnid, and Knock Out.

Yeah I meant Megatron in the 1st Bayformers, just felt like a really menacing giant robot villain that tore an autobot in half.
