The "Heroes Vs Villains" Marvel RPG - Season IV

The gathered guests rose as the processional music began. Out first was Valeria, stumbling along on her tiny little legs as she scattered rose petals along the aisle. Franklin was out next, hamming it up for the cameras as he carried the small pillow with the rings attached. The bridesmaids were out next, escorted by the groomsmen. Wade walked as though the fear of God had been put into him, and Clint couldn't help but notice the smile on Jen's face.

There was a brief pause as the others took their positions, and then the bridal march began.

Clint felt his breath catch as Wanda made her way down the aisle. From that first day in the mansion, moments before they were presented to the world as the new line up of Avengers, he was smitten with her. He'd tried for years to make something happen, but at the time it wasn't meant to be. She had The Vision, and he had fallen for Barbara. His Bobbi. He wondered if she was watching right now.

Wanda took her place beside him on the altar, and their eyes met instantly. Hawkeye felt his heart skip a beat, and his whole body trembled.

"Dearly beloved, ve are gathered here today to join these two in holy matrimony. But before ve begin, let us take a moment to remember those friends and loved ones who have gone to the Father before us, and could not be here today."

As much as that day was about celebration, it was also about rememberance. For the teammates who had just fallen, for family who had gone one before, for friends who had gone to live in eternal paradise, one way or the other.

"Danke. Now, Clint, Wanda, you are here today to join in an endless journay together as husband and wife. Do ve have the rings?"

Franklin brought the pillow forward so the rings could be taken off.

"Clint, do you take Wanda to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?"

"I do."

"Then place the ring on Wanda's left hand with the words 'With this ring, I thee wed.'"

Clint hand trembled as he slipped the ring on.

"With this ring, I thee wed."

"Wanda, do you take Clint to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?"

"I do."

"Then place the ring on Clint's left hand with the words 'With this ring, I thee wed.'"

"With this ring, I thee wed."

"If anybody here has any reason why these two should not be wed, let them speak now or forever hold their peace."

Silence.

"Then, by the power vested in me by God and the holy catholic church, I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Clint lifted the veil and took Wanda in his arms as the two kissed to the applause, and cheers, and cat call or two, or the gathered heroes.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Barton."

Clint Barton and Wanda Maximoff.

Hawkeye and the Scarlet Witch.

Friends. Teammates. Lovers.

Husband and Wife.

"So, how's this for a happy ending?" Johnny said as he and the rest of the Fantastic Four sat down at their table.

"Such a lovely ceremony," Sue said as the caterer poured champagne into their glasses.

"Ladies and genltemen, I know it's usually the Best Man who makes the toast, but I'd like to say a few words," Clint announced. "Actually, I think it can all be summed up rather quickly. Thank you. Thank you for your support, thank you for coming, and thank you for not giving up. I'm able to stand up here and celebrate today because all of you kept fighting, even when the chips are down. So enjoy yourself tonight. This is as much for you as it is for Wanda and I."

Frankie looked around the table at her family and raised her own glass.

"To many good times to come."

"To heroes."

"To adventurers."

"To friends."

"To family."

"All. You. Can. Eat!"

"Wade! You've taken half the snack table back! You didn't even get a plate! You actually picked up the table, and brought it over here." I really don't think she gets this.

"All. You. Can. Eat!" Siryn sighs and sits down as I start to pick at the chicken. Man, this spread is unbeliveable... but where are the party rings? No spread is complete without party rings! Siryn looks kinda upset.

"Hey..." I say, sitting closer to her... "...I just want you to know... there's nothing going on between She Hulk and me. I mean, she asked... but I turned her down of course..."

"You just don't get it do you Wade?" she walks off in a hurry. Eh? Wasn't she meant to go "Oh alright Wade, now let's go make hot monkey love in the honny moon suite... mmmmmmmm honey." Why can't women just be simple?

"Having a little girl troubles Wade?" Mr. F comes up and sits next to me.

"Yeah, she just stormed off saying I don't get it... and I really don't. What do I have to do to please women? I mean, you've got Sue, is that only down to your gigantic pe--"

"No! nonononono. We're together cause of our love Wade... and I think Siryn's feeling just a bit... well unloved by you right now." I stare blankly.

"So what, you're saying I should just lock us in our room all night and go at it like rabbits?"

"No Wade, I'm saying make the woman feel special... then you can go at it like rabbits... works with Sue everytime."

"I heard that."

"Opps... uh, I'll talk to you later Wade." finally I see the picture. All I needed was some braniac to talk to me. I stand to be feet.

"Uh, everyone, I'd like to take a minute to say a few words." I immeadiately spot Hawkeye mouthing "NO!" at me, while Johnny buries his face in his hands. "We've gone through a lot over these past few days, invasions, weddings, wars... some of us poor soles have even been to Canada. But I don't think I would have been able to get through it all without one amazing woman by my side."

Siryn comes back into the room and looks at me... a glimmer of hope in her eyes. "She's been with me all the way, helped me get through mental and physical states... and I really don't know where I'd be without her." she walks closer to the front.

"Terry... will you marry me?"

Clint sat with his arm around Wanda. She felt so warm, so soft, so comforting. Her head rested gently on his shoulder as they watched their guests enjoying the reception. Ben and Johnny had made their way to the bar for a drinking contest, Wade and Franklin were playing cards…God only hoped they weren’t using Wade’s UNO deck…, Cap had spent most of the time since he arrived talking to Nick Fury and some of the other guests from S.H.I.E.L.D. He had taken some time to share a dance with Sharon Carter. Clint and Wanda had had their first dance, Jen had caught the bouquet, Wade had plowed over several people to catch the garter, and Pietro had shared the father-daughter dance with Wanda. Clint could just make out a glimmer of disappointment in her eye during that dance. Every little girl dreamed of her Daddy giving her away, dreamed of dancing with him on her wedding day.

But there they sat now, husband and wife, just enjoying the simple parts of life.

Wanda sighed as she nestled her head against Clint’s neck.

“Love you.”

“Love you, too.”

“So, where do you think we go from here?”

“Dunno. Mansion's gone and the city is a mess. But that’s what makes the journey so exciting. Not knowing. And not having to go it alone…well,” he leaned over and kissed her on the forehead, “that just makes it all the sweeter. Sky’s the limit, honey, and I’ll be right there with you every step of the way.”

(I.C. Taskmaster)
I am lost, not physically, emotionally. My greed caused the deaths of hundreds of innocent people. I know I've killed before, in cold blood, without remorse. I always had a reason, I was paid to, wanted to or had to kill. I wasn't paid to get those people killed, I didn't want those people to die. They had nothing to do with the task at hand. Remove the threat of the heroes.

After the start of the big final battle, I had kill Crystal, Quicksilver's wife. I don't regret that at all, she put on the uniform, she knew the risks. Quicksilver found me a fast as he could. I didn't fight back, I wasn't sure I deserved to live. During our fight I kept seeing what Thanos' forces were doing to the people around me. After Quicksilver was satisfied, I actually offered to help them. He just hit me again and said that the Avengers didn't need my help.

And he was right. They stopped the invasion. I wonder how the managed to do it. Now, things are going back to as normal as they can be. Word is that they're even having a wedding. I just wish I could be there to see what stupid thing Wade does to humiliate himself and the people around him.

So, after all this, where am I?

On the front steps of large house in a small town. I travel out of the country as fast as I could, went down to South America. I got this place after some guy tried to run out on his bill. He should've known how it was going to turn out. I have a feeling I'll be here for a while. Hell, maybe I'll never leave.

The mutant known as Exodus hovered over the bed of his master Magneto. The harbinger of the magnetic fury lay unconcious, recovering from the wounds he recieved at the hands of The Fallen One.

The Fallen One, just thinking about him made Exodus' eyes glow with rage. The cosmic slave had bested them both and deprived Magneto of the glory of victory. The flatscans who now celebrated their victory should have been indebted to Magneto and Exodus. Instead they were only an afterthought.

No More!
Exodus thought

Never again will I be humbled. I must seek out power beyond the Fallen One. Power to make my enemies tremble

Exodus took another look at Magnus. The old man had ordered him to return the two children to Avengers mansion once the fighting had ended.

"You have gone soft in your old age my master"
Exodus whispered "Perhaps the time has come for another to lead our race."

The mighty Thor stood on a rooftop high atop the ruined city of New York. His thoughts were sombre despite the defeat of Thanos. For the Lady Sif was still missing.

Once the battle had ended, the Thunder god had regrouped with the surviving Asgaridans and a frantic search for the princess had begun. It was long before they tracked her to the Statue of Liberty where Cain Marko had shackled her. But the Lady had not been there. Thor himself had unearthed her prison only to discover an empty whole and unbroken chains.

The sight had nearly broken his spirit. Thor and his mortal allies had saved the world, perhaps the entire universe, but he had seemingly lost his wife and child in the process.

His thoughts turned to his mortal allies and the joyous occasion this day marked for them. Hawkeye and the Scarlet Witch's wedding. Would that all was well so Thor could join them in their merriment. But all was not well. The search for Sif had to continue.

Thor would find her and the child, and if they were anything but unharmed, then his revenge would be most terrible indeed.

I sigh and lean back, my office chair leaning back with my weight. I glance at the time, almost time to start getting ready. Parker invited me to a late night coffee meeting at a small coffee joint near the ESU campus. The Coffee Bean or something…

I shuffle around the pictures laid out on my home office desk, each one containing a priceless image of two happy people. I lean back forward and smile at the couple as they smile at each other. Visions of love captured for all time in a thin sheet of paper.
I gently move a pile to reveal a candid shot of Parker. His camera at his face as he adjusted the zoom, a stained glass window behind him, the light streaming through it illuminated his handsome profile. I smile and pick it up staring at it….

“Sarah! Thank God you’re alive!” He sweeps me up into a hug as the crowd surges around us, our camera’s colliding into each other as we hug awkwardly around them.

I pull back, his hands still on my shoulders, and smile up at him.

“Are you alright? I didn’t know where you went.”

He leans forward to hear over the massive cheering.
“What?”

I stand on tip toe and speak into his ear.
“Are you alright?”

He nods before speaking into my own.

“Neil wants to push ahead with the paper this week. Did you get any shots?”

“Yes…lot’s.”

“Great.” He stands smiling down at me.

I look at him confused, wondering if we’re going to leave, someone bumps me from behind and I take a step closer to him.

“What is it?”

He seems to come out of it and moves to my side putting his arm around my waist as we shove our way through the crowd.

“Nothing, just glad you’re safe. Aunt Trudy would have killed me if you’d been hurt.”

I smile and touch my finger to my lips. Something more than Aunt Trudy there…I set the picture aside. I’ll have to give Trudy a copy, its National Geographic level if I say so myself.

I glance back down at the wedding pictures and wonder if I’ll ever have that someday.
Not the big wedding with lots of guests, but the look. The look of two people so absolutely in love that even a galactic event couldn’t pull them apart. The room is silent as I ponder the extent of true love and if I’ll ever be able to feel it sometime, if it’ll ever leech from me like it did from them, till it covers a whole city block, or even the whole city.

“Meow.”

I push away from the desk, breaking my trance, as Sassy rubs against me. I lean over and pet her as her purrs vibrate through my hand.

“Well…here’s hoping.” I break the silence in the room as I walk to be bed room. The evening light streams in with pinks and oranges as the clouds paint similar colors across the pale blue sky.

I glance at my now empty workstation a sober reminder of my shedding any pretense of being a ‘hero’ I flick the TV on for some news as I slip into a the clothes I’d laid out earlier. A short skirt, knee boots and a cute pink top.

"... Super-Hero parenting later this evening. Now onto the latest topic of Super-Hero discussion: the disappearance of Spider-Man. Has he left for good? Or is he recuper-"

I flip it off as I sit on the bed to put my boots on. The last thing I need to hear about is Spider-Man, or lack thereof. Did he just expect the city to take care of it’s self? Or is he trying to tell me something…

"You'd be better off if you went somewhere else. The super-hero gig hasn't done much for me.
It got your grandfather and mother killed. My wife killed, my daughter kidnapped.
My life has been nothing but torture and pain ever since I first became Spider-man. I've been hunted, hated, attacked, and beaten more times than I can count….. These days I've begun to think that this world just needs someone to do what has to be done.”

I lean against the window sill and let the evening breeze brush against my skin. The last time I’d talked to him he was depressed, and alone. He’d never wish that on anyone else, so maybe it wasn’t a direct message to me. Maybe it was just an overtone to what he really wanted to say. I glance at my empty workstation, maybe I’ve faced my inner demons, maybe it’s time I faced my outer ones…

A light knock from the front door breaks my thoughts.
I race to open it and find a smiling Parker there.

“Hi.”

“Hi, wow you look….oh these are for you.”

He holds out a bouquet of… Film rolls on floral sticks, tied together with a sky blue ribbon and filled out with baby’s breathe. I smile broadly and take the offered gift.

“I figured that’ll last you about a week.” He say’s lightly.

I blush with pleasure.
“Thank you.” I say looking up at him. He stares at me for a moment before clearing his breathe.

“So..shall we go?”

I place the ‘bouquet’ gently on the table and grab my over coat.

“Yes.”

My eyes stray to the open window with the colorful sunset shining from behind the buildings of New York.

“Let’s go.”

The world has changed once more. A new definition of Heroes vs Villains has arisen, old enemies have returned, rivalries have been strengthened. The greed of some has brought pain to others. Beings of power have attacked the earth, those brave enough to stand have stood… at huge cost.

Whole nations lie in ruins. The greed of one has brought much destruction. The world must now put itself back on its feet, rebuild, and recharge. They must bury their dead, their brave, those who gave their lives to take a stand against evil. The good have been corrupted. The evil have found new ways to bring destruction. Some have restored their former power. All because of greed.

But all is not lost. Past loves have been rekindled. The joy of birth has been celebrated. Burdens have been lifted, people have found their way. Friendships have been created and continued. Retired heroes have risen to the challenge once more. But the world is far from perfect. Battles of obsession have been fought, to tragic consequences.

Lives have been wasted, lovers lost, enemies killed. It is far from perfect.
Once more the world has changed for the worse. All the Marvel universe can do now is pick up their dead and rebuild. And then wait, wait for what happens in their lives next.

The invasion is over, another chapter in the lives of the heroes and villains has come to a close. Some of these chapters have ended for good.

Some were heroes, giving their lives in the line of duty. Others were villains who fell in battle… but did their punishment fit the crime?

The world will put itself back on its feet once more. It is fortunate enough to still have the people to help them do so. As a community, they rebuild. It takes a disaster such as the invasion, to bring the world together and bring out the best in people.

What is next in store for these people? More tragedy? Will they finally be able to take rest and rejoice?

Only time will tell, and one year later, the Marvel Universe will find itself in a very different state.

THE END
For Now...
