Harvey Smith... he's not a bad designer I guess. He did okay with Deus Ex: Invisible War, but when I hear him talking about AI, I cringe.
They had so much going into the AI of Deus Ex that he decided not to have in the final game because he said it wouldn't make it more fun. (Read: Casual gamers wouldn't notice someone picking up a fire extinguisher to douse a flaming chair, the end result being you could damage the world however you wanted and people wouldn't care unless it was a plot-related element or it resulted in them getting hit in the face.)
I don't really think that's the point of Deus Ex games. You set out to do everything you think is important, and the combination of those important ventures makes the end result fun. Not unified ammo, not wonky physics. If you've got great AI, keep it. Don't strip things down for the people who want to play the game like a shooter.
