Arnold Schwarzenegger Returning For The Legend of Conan

Yeah I dont' want it either.

Sabotage was pretty bad due to the studio interference. Also it was a Skip Woods script, which is often awful.

The only Arnold movie I liked thus far was the Last Stand.

Yeah Last Stand was ok. Escape Plan bored me to tears and I remember almost nothing about it. I might like it more if I saw it again.

I want to believe that this will work, as an "out of retirement" action movie, as a fantasy adventure, as a commentary on declining masculinity, and as an allegory for Arnold's life.

I'm probably being naive, but there is huge potential for something memorable.

Can't blame Arnold for doing Kim Jee Woon and David Ayer films right off the bat.

Since Ridley Scott is probably done at Fox after The Martian, he should direct. It can serve as the last hurrah for both of him and Arnold.

A formula that has yet to work on film (IE Indy 4, Die Hard 5)

This.

Dear Zod... Scott directing Arnold in a Conan film... I must ponder this, as I haven't really liked much of Scott's recent output.

^ By recent, do you mean the last 15 years like me, or...?

past 3-4 years.

Yeah, more that. I still think the directors cut of KINGDOM OF HEAVEN is a great film, even if I dislike Bloom as the lead of the film. But these last few films? Yeah, he's still the master at choosing his shots, at creating the world of his films, but narrative momentum, compelling characters, ect...He's whiffed on those fronts while giving us EPIC sized films.

Even in his recent "failures" (I happen to think Prometheus is great), Scott's films have something worth talking about. You can never accuse them of being shallow.

A film about King Conan and the end of his reign, played by a grizzled Arnold, worn down by his battles and the losses he's gone through, with Scott's aura of imminent death that permeates his recent films, will give us a lot to chew on, even if the story is no good.

I really think his only TRUE failure in recent years would have to be Exodus. What a crappy movie.

Eh... Prometheus is gorgeous to look at but... Sorry, it's a steaming mess on every other level outside of pure production, and it's ambitions don't absolve it of being so, to my thinking.

Michael Fassbender was brilliant as David, so it has that going for it as well.

I would put it more that Fassbender has some amazing scenes and is great in them, (David's intro is really good.) but the character is too opaque to get behind 100% for my tastes. But at least David isn't a frakking idiot like the rest of the crew sans Elba and his co-pilots, but then, THEY weren't the focus of the film.

So where is this great actor to play King Conan you are thinking of? You lot are really building up something that has the slimiest of chances of coming to realization, if for no other reason, Arnie has never been that type of actor. I say this as someone who has loved many of his films.

Look at Arnold's last acting roles. His eyes are watery, he's run down, he's tired. The guy's not an Oscar contender or anything, but it's not that kind of movie.

And when it comes to performances, I think outside of True Lies (a different kind of beast altogether, and even then...) CONAN was Arnold's meatiest action role. He's minimalist sure, but damn, it's good minimalism. He does a lot with a look. Milius knew how to use him and Arnold knew how to give him what he wanted. As compared to Destroyer where Arnold's Conan is suddenly a chatter box.

I think whether this movie happens or not is entirely up to Terminator, at this point. They can mumble about the script and schedules as much as they like, but if Arnold's first few comeback roles had blown the doors off box office-wise, we'd have seen this film already. But they've all had trouble even breaking even, except for Expendables (and even those haven't been as successful as they would have liked).

If the Terminator remix has a great opening weekend, I suspect this project will green light very quickly with investors, but if not...I'm betting it won't happen (sadly, believe me, I'm a fan).

:word:

Arnold is/was only as good as his director. Get him a strong director and he pulls through. It's why his best performances were with James Cameron.

Seeing as how Ridley Scott has seemingly forgotten how to direct good movies over the last 3-4 years, I'd prefer that he NOT do this one either. Part of me wants to suggest Mel Gibson just because I've like all of his "historical-based" films.

Mel Gibson's pseudo-historical films are dire, but as this is fantasy his lack of research, bias, and taste for anachronism wouldn't matter.

I guarantee, there's a huge chance if it happens, that it'll suck because they are gonna get some hack a la Alan Taylor.

Could be wrong, but Universal seems to be in no hurry to green light this.
