Arnold Schwarzenegger Returning For The Legend of Conan

I agree. The Momoa movie was closer to RE Howard's original stories, but Arnold's movies told their stories better.

John Milius' direction was outstanding in the first. That's what made that movie what it is, imo, and the Basil Poledoiris' legendary score. I really don't think Destroyer's story was any better than the 2011 film.

Destroyer is quite weak, though it has some moments I like, particularly the fight with the water-serpent. I really wanted the recent Hercules move with the Rock to have some vintage monster battles of that type, and it was rather frustrating that many were hinted at in the trailer that didn't really exist in the movie.

I quite enjoy Red Sonja as a guilty pleasure. It's a Conan movie in all but name.

This made me sad. I can imagine poor little C. Lee watching that scene in the theater with a propeller beanie on his head and a traumatized look on his face:csad:

Sorry to disappoint....but I was 25 at the time.

You're 58? Kudos, I wouldn't have guessed from you avatar. ;)

I totally agree. John Milius' writing and direction in Barbarian were damn near perfect. Sure he strayed from RE Howard's original stories somewhat (mostly with Conan's origins) but because it was my introduction to the character (I'd never read any Conan novels or comics before I saw this movie) I never really cared. The story they told, and the music that went with it, were all superbly done.

Destroyer was far weaker, mostly thanks to its PG rating. Also, if Barbarian somewhat strayed from the original stories, Destroyer was so far off the beaten track that it hardly resembles a Conan film at all. Making Queen Taramis an evil b**ch (Taramis was a good benevolent queen, it was her identical twin sister who was the evil b**ch). Making The Heart of Aroman a key to a secret treasure (originally it was a powerful artifact capable of raising the dead). Making Thoth-Amon the guardian of the key (he was originally one of Conan's most feared and powerful mortal enemies), and having him die so easily (the key could have been guarded by an iron golem just as effectively). Zula being written as a woman (the character was even a man in the cartoon for Christ sake).

However, even with everything that's wrong with Destroyer, I have to admit that it is good cheesy fun. And the score from the second film is almost as good as the first (it should be, it was composed by the same guy).

The Jason Mamoa one though? A good effort, but it just didn't really click the way the 1982 movie does. Too much emphasis on CGI and wire fighting, not enough on good compelling story telling. Plus, much of the film was kinda boring. I was never bored with either of Arnie's Conan movies. Disappointed in the second one maybe, but never bored.

Ummm, I think you're getting your Conan movies confused. Destroyer didn't have a water serpent fight scene. There was a giant bird made of smoke (which they didn't fight, it just kidnapped Jenna while they slept). There was the mirror monster. Then the mortal manifestation of Argoth, the god they were trying to resurrect. But no water serpent.

You might be confusing Destroyer with the 2011 movie (it had a giant squid type creature which you might be thinking of) or Red Sonja which has an aquatic "death machine", which was sort of a robotic water serpent. And of course the first movie had a giant snake protecting the treasure of Thulsa Doom, but there was no water in the treasure room.

Yes, you're right, I was thinking of Sonja. I just remembered Arnold fighting it.

Yeah, with Destroyer they really should have just followed Roy Thomas' and Gerry Conway's script, as proved by their Conan graphic novel "The Horn of Azoth".

As for the 2011 reboot, despite its shortcomings, I still find it a watchable Saturday night popcorn flick. To Marcus Nispel's credit, he does provide some very nice Frazetta-inspired atmosphere, which I don't think any of Arnold's films did fully.

Still, I do want to mention something a poster over at http://www.conan.com/invboard/index.php?act=idx suggested. One of the things that probably could have been fixed in Nispel's film were the baddies(although I'd still keep Nathan Jones' Akhun). This user suggested, seeing as to how Nispel had previously directed Pathfinder, that maybe Nispel's Conan would have been quite a different film if its villains would have been those vikings from Pathfinder. Certainly more menacing. Just a thought I wanted to share.

The archetypal Conan villains are, to me, the corrupt aristocrat and the evil wizard. Both are usually successful in movies, if written broadly and cast with the right actor.

Well, something like the suggestion in my last post would be very akin to two of the most popular Howard-written Conan stories which are "The Frost-Giant's Daughter" and "Iron Shadows in The Moonlight". No wizards or aristocrats(though are good material in other stories), just a band of brutal Vanir and two frost giants(Frost Giant's Daughter) and/or a band of vicious pirates, a giant man-ape, and living statues(Iron Shadows).

Here's a pretty interesting and informative video I found regarding the 2011 film and the possible future of other Howard-creations, including Conan, if Legend of Conan is successful:

That was pretty interesting. I thought they were a little unnecessarily harsh towards John Milius's Conan, but other than that it was very informative.

I'll say that I found Momoa's Conan fairly likable. Seemed like a guy who enjoyed having a good time.

This might be a stupid question but was Arnold in Red Sonja originally supposed to be Conan?

I had always heard he was supposed to be Conan, but for some legal reasons they had to change the name.

This movie is not happening with Schwarzenegger folks. Time to move on.

Well there gloomy Gus......I was wondering when you would poke your head in and spread your shiny sunny opinions on everyone. If you had bothered to actually read the last few pages (which cover over 6 months of postings) this has basically been a "Lets cover all things Conan related" thread and not a Arnold is definitely going to make another Conan movie thread in that time.

And by the way.....I see some 3 year olds over in that direction...maybe you can go steal their candy, pop their balloons, and tell them all about how Santa Clause is fake....since that kind of stuff seems to make your day.

My problem with Mamoa's Conan wasn't so much how he played the character, but more how the movie lacked the epic feel of Arnold's first Conan movie. The writing, directing, even the music seemed to be lacking in the 2011 film.

That's Millenium Films for you. There's a cheap tackiness to their films which works some times, but not for Conan.

I'd heard the same thing. I also heard that Kull the Conqueror was originally supposed to be the third Conan movie, but they couldn't come to a financial arrangement that Arnold would accept, so they renamed the character Kull and cast Kevin Sorbo in the role.

It might be best to rename the thread title and call it "Age of Conan."
