Looking at the flashbacks, I love Wiig and Max Winkler, but Rogen just doesn't make sense to me. He doesn't look like Tambor and he didn't have the mannerisms.

There are better choices, but I think he did the best he could. Rogen lacked the *****iness of George Sr, though. I felt he was too clueless looking in his scenes..

 

[Sawyer]

I love the gradual reveal throughout the season that the gathering at Lucille's apartment was for George Michael's graduation. First you think it's just Michael, Lucille and George Sr. Then Buster enters the picture. Then GOB... and then finally the whole family sings "Happy Birthday" for George Michael. At his graduation party.

So I just finished my first run of this new season and...this was certainly an interesting experiment. Some golden moments, some...not so golden moments. But I am curious to watch more (i hope there's more!!!!), there's so many loose ends to tie up.

I gotta say though, I felt like Jason Bateman...kind of really phoned it in for this season though. I don't know, he just...didn't seem like Michale Bluth and Bateman himself seemed very fatigued in most of the scenes he was in and not his usual snappy, sarcastic, witty self from the first 3 seasons. Maybe that's what his character called for this season but I barely laughed during any of his scenes, again, to me, it seemed like he just wasn't into it.

Everyone else however slipped perfectly back into their old characters. The George Michael, Maeby, Tobias and GOB episodes were definitely highlights and showed they could hold their own storylines by themselves. But, if they do more, they need to bring the family back together, that's when the true magic happens with this cast.

It's definitely more because that's what his character called for. Michael, like Lindsey and George Sr. I think are better when they work off the other cast members than when alone so the laughs aren't there as much because he doesn't really have the other characters that he usually makes those sarcastic whitty comments to.

Also, his character was pretty jaded and cynical throughout most of the season as his housing plans fell through and after the whole thing with George Michael.

Yeah your probably right, which is actually a relief because alot of times i was thinking to myself "Wow, Jason Bateman just isn't into this anymore, is he?". But I know better, and I know he loves this character and this show. Again, on a whole, it was...good. Still sorting my feelings out, may need a rewatch but the cast needs to be together much more often in the next iteration.

I love his story with George Michael and the more I think of the end, the more I like it. So much of Arrested Development is about Michael needing the family as much as they need him. Another running theme is that Michael directs most of his co-dependence to his son and as a result is overbearing and oppressive of George Michael. GM punching Michael signifies GM finally becoming a man and breaking free of his father. Basically, it is the highest that GM has ever risen. Conversely, Michael being punched by GM is his rock bottom. His last family member has abandoned him. He is entirely unneeded which is rock bottom for a guy who needs to be needed.

Couldn't have put it better. I liked Michael's story because it finally shows in a more obvious way that he is as dysfunctional and as messed up as the rest of the family and that he isn't the white knight that he himself makes himself out to be.
