Gary Oldman Coveted By Warner Bros For ‘Akira’ And ‘Arthur & Lancelot’

EXCLUSIVE: The advance accolades for Gary Oldman’s work in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has put the actor in high demand. He’s Warner Bros’ choice not only to play the role of The Colonel in Akira (Garrett Hedlund will star in one of the two leads in the Jaume Collet-Serra-directed film), but also to play Merlin in Arthur & Lancelot, which David Dobkin will direct from his own script. The studio likes Joel Kinnaman for the Lancelot role and will test actors shortly for the role of Arthur. Oldman is working for the studio right now in the Chris Nolan-directed The Dark Knight Rises, which is shooting in New York at the moment. The big question is whether Oldman gets some love from the Academy this time. It’s hard to believe that this actor hasn’t been nominated once in his great career. He’s managed by Douglas Urbanski and agented by Jim Osborne.

So what is the twist on this? By contemporary re-imagining what does that mean, set in present day like SHERLOCK?

I hope it turns out better than Robin Hood which was a big disappointment.

It's still set in the Dark Ages. The central idea of the plot is the creation of the concept of democracy by Arthur.

By "contemporary reimagining", I believe they refer to a fast-paced, action-orientated "buddy knight" movie, in the same vein as Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes.

Marion Cotillard Offered Role of Morgana

David Dobkin’s Arthur & Lancelot appears to be fast taking shape at Warner Bros.: Vulture hears that Oscar-winning Frenchwoman Marion Cotillard is being offer the role of Morgana, the sorceress half-sister to Arthur. Filmmaking at Warner Bros. has always been a clubby affair (rare is the film that isn’t first offered to “Warner” directors like Clint Eastwood, Steven Soderbergh, Christopher Nolan, Guy Ritchie, or Ben Affleck), and it’s quickly becoming clear that Cotillard is very much in the club, having first co-starred in Inception for the studio last year, and in Contagion this year, and in next year's The Dark Knight Rises. - nymag.com

I love that Eva Green played Morgana in the TV series and now Marion might play her in the movie. :hrt:

I love to see Cotillard playing villainous characters. Her darker French roles are still my favorites of hers. At first I thought this seemed like a weird project for her...until I saw that Soderbergh was directing, lol.

I like Eva Green but I can't bear myself to watch that show, don't like Starz's shows and now that it's canceled as well I won't bother with it. It's cool enough she did a role in a tv series nonetheless.

And having Cotillard playing more villain role is something I don't mind with.

Eva was the only thing worth watching in that show. All the other characters specially Arthur make me cringe.

You're not missing anything. I watched it because I love James Purefoy and was curious to see what would make Eva Green turn to TV, and I couldn't make it past the 2nd episode. Arthur was the worst. I'm gonna have a hard time watching Jamie Campbell Bower in anything after that show, tbh.

Starz did have one good show, though - Party Down. I miss it. :csad:

Yeah I think reading on what people think of Arthur himself and the actor is what drove me away from watching it, I also feared the show itself would've been something like Spartacus. However I've been meaning to watch Party Down, heard good things about it despite that it's canceled.

"Arthur & Lancelot" Hits Budget Difficulties

A few hours after word that "Paradise Lost" has been delayed at least several months due to budget retooling, now comes word that Warner Brothers' "Arthur and Lancelot" is facing a budgetary crisis reports Deadline.

Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington and The Killing‘s Joel Kinnaman have been cast in the titular roles in this David Dobkin-scripted effort. However what started as a $90 million contemporary style re-imagining of the legend has the studio worried that the cost could blow out to as much as $130 million - too much for a film with two unproven leads.

Warners paid $2 million to acquire Dobkin's script and essentially discarded two other Arthur-themed projects it had in development - one with Bryan Singer and another with Guy Ritchie, with the latter's likely to get pushed forward if this 'Arthur' doesn't proceed.

The studio has apparently invited Dobkin to set the picture up elsewhere if he can.

Warner has removed the movie of the March 15, 2013 and didn't release a new date. Either the budget cut will force the movie to be rescheduled to second half of 2013 or first half of 2014, or it won't happen altogether.

Damn it. I was interested in this, mainly due to the two lead actors and Cotillard. Sucks that it might not happen at all now. :(

Colin Farrell in talks for 'Arthur and Lancelot'
WB restarts David Dobkin pic after postponement
By JUSTIN KROLL

David Dobkin is writing and directing the pic which was expected to go into production in January but was postponed due to budget concerns. Charles Roven will produce.

At the time Kit Harington was set to play King Arthur and Joel Kinniman was on board to play Lancelot, but when Warners pulled the plug both actors fell out due to scheduling conflicts.

With Farrell the film not only now looks to be in motion to get back up in running but the studio now has that more recognizable star in place which some sources say was part of the reason Warners was weary about moving forward back in January.

Plot details are vague. Though Dobkin is known more for his comedies like "The Wedding Crashers" and "The Change-Up," insiders this pic will be more in the vein of "Braveheart"-style action.

Dobkin will also produce with Roven, Richard Suckle and Lionel Wigram.

CAA-repped Farrell will be seen next in Sony's reboot of "Total Recall."

Will he play both roles? That could be interesting.

^ I believe he's Lancelot. If they find another A-Lister for Arthur, and go through with Gary Oldman as Merlin and Marion Cottilard as Morgana Le Fay, it'll be pretty interesting.

Eh Colin Farrell in the movie worries me.

^why he is a great actor and a superior actor than harrington and kinniman

Variety said that none of the actors previously linked are attached anymore so no more Gary and Marion as well.
