Assassin's Creed - Part 2

The search for a good video game movie continues.

All I need is a good Halo movie.

Well, there's Gears of War up first, so let's see how that goes, i just wish Spielberg was still attached to Halo in some capacity, if MS/343 got him to do (at least) the first movie that'd be amazing.

There's no guarantee Gears of War ever gets made. This isn't the first time a Gears of War movie got set up. Len Wiseman was on it a long time ago and left the project.

I don't think Tom Hardy's Splinter Cell movie gets made.

It's Tom Clancy, not Hardy.
If a movie was made, it would be based on a book from the 80s.

Tom Hardy had speculation on starring in the main role ,thats what spidey was on about :cwink:

I think Tom Hardy is still attached, and he's been attached to Splinter Cell for quite some time now. If Assassin's Creed flat out bombs this weekend, hard to believe it will still go forward. But I guess we shall see.

Good grief that was terrible. Did the writers even bother to look at the source material? The Templars from the game had ambitions to control the world not subvert violence. Nothing about the first civilization, other than some bland reference. Not only did the movie mostly take place in the present time line, there was hardly any dialogue and the horrible decision to speak in Spanish with subtitles doesn't give the audience the immersive feel of living the history.

This movie is a total shame of what it could have been. Say what you will about Warcraft, it can't be accused of not being faithful to the source material.

What I did like:

The action scenes were good (what few there were). I liked how they portrayed the Animus. I think that change was probably to avoid looking too much like the Matrix.

Fassbender did a superb job. I liked him in both the role of Cal and Aguilar. The rest of the cast was very good as well.

The list is too long on what I didn't like but the highlights are:

Not enough time in Spain
Only one short scene interacting with a historical character
Doing historical scenes in subtitles
Nothing about First Civ
Nothing about Eagle Vision
Not that I need a ton of fan servicing, but would have been nice to have an easter egg or two about Altair or Ezio.

umm what????

In the games, it is all translated. I think that was the point.

while i havent seen the film i prefer when films set in different countries are subtitled it gives the film a more accurate portrayal and more realistic

films like Valkyrie always throw me off when they all speaking english when it was set in germany

The point is that the animus translates whatever language of whatever past place into English so the host can understand it better. It's not realistic. That's the point.

The Force Awakens had good reviews and good word of mouth. It doesn't need another cut.

BvS had bad reviews and bad word of mouth. There is no good cut of that trash movie.

That avatar of yours fits this post.

lol I just haven't seen a good cut of TFA yet :o

and no one mentioned BvS... was that an attempt to piss off the brigade? Please don't lol

Except the Animus is a virtual reality machine that lets you experience memories of your genetic ancestors. It's not "realistic." It's the Animus letting you experience and see things that happened in the past. It's translating things to let you understand them. Sometimes it can't translate everything either and sometimes there are also glitches.

I feel like Justin Kurzel as a filmmaker tries to come off like this bold artiste type but fails in the process. If you were making this period historical film and wanted authenticity for the language, yeah I guess I can understand it. Doing it for Assassin's Creed I think was silly. Does it really add to the movie in anyway or make it more authentic? No.

Assassin's Creed is an action-adventure fictional take on history. It's not the real history. So trying to make them all speak a foreign language in the 15th century doesn't IMHO functionally mean you are being more bold and artistic when you are making a movie based on Assassin's Creed, and there's never been an idea that you can't experience the past in a translated native language.

I don't know if I'm going to go see it Friday or Saturday. Since when is releasing movies on Wednesday a thing? That new JLaw and Chris P movie is coming out today as well. I thought Thursday or Friday was the rule?
I'm really looking forward to seeing what AC is about, though I admit the research I've done makes me thinkg Michael isn't exactly a good fit for such a role.

Friday release in the U.S. is the norm (with late night/midnight showings the night before). But the occasional Wednesday release isn't terribly unheard of or that uncommon really. For example each of the Lord of the Ring films were released on Wednesday's in the U.S.

In this particular case, given that Christmas Eve/Christmas Day falls on Saturday/Sunday - a number of studios may have opted to increase their 'holiday weekend' by releasing on Wednesday instead.

In AC's case also, there's the added benefit of being able to release it on the month/day that holds some pretty significant value in the Assassin's Creed lore

Hearing that the movie clearly has problems definitely disappoints me, I was hoping that this would be one of the rare tolerable video game films (of which there are precious few... I did enjoy WarCraft, and I acutally kind of liked Prince of Persia as well). Chances are we'll probably hold off seeing it in the theater and will wait for home release.

As people have said, the Animus translates the language for the host. I felt the decision to do the translation took away from the fact that the Cal character is supposed to be reliving the history of Aguilar. Also it added to the fact that there was not enough time spent in the past.

In the games the story takes place in the past. There's an overarching story that takes place in the present but the games were always about what happened in the past.

Also we see Aguilar interact with Christopher Columbus for like 2 seconds. In the game historical characters were major characters in the game that you would interact with.

And you do mean major. We aren't talking small supporting roles. Heck, the main villain is usually a real historic character (such as Rodrigo Borgia or Bartholomew Roberts).

In extreme cases, practically every major character besides the present day guys and the protagonist were real. AC4, for example.

I just don't pah enough attention to movie releases. I was around for LOTR and just remember they came out every December. I still think a Xmas week release date is a bad thing, but if it has significance for the game fans then that's pretty cool. As for reviews I've learned from last year and this years releases to no longer put stock in them. I haven't seen War Craft and I admit I did not like Prince of Persia and I'm not surprised it didn't get a sequel.

Da Vinci's Demons was more like Assassin's Creed than this movie really.

I just wished they skipped the whole present day story and just have a straight forwrd story in the past.

Yeah exactly which is why the writers must not have spent any time looking at the games. Vidic was way more of a side character than any of the historical characters, but they way they wrote Jeremy Iron's character, he's basically Vidic. I know his actual character is mentioned in a few of the games, but he was never really seen or dealt with.
