Care to elaborate rather than just calling it stupid? I didnt like being pulled out of the animus but the way Ubisoft tied togather and used various mythologies and religious iconagraphy and modern scientific theories was a pretty brilliant concept even if the execution had some misteps.

I thought there were some neat things done with it, but as I said, the historical side of the AC games were interesting enough for me. With assassins and Templars throughout history, I didn't need any kind of scifi elements.

Pretty much this. I think that's what's so great about AC4.. they barely touch on it.

I just thought it was dumb. When AC came out I expected it to just be a history based Assassin game.. but then they went stupid sci fi with "everything you've been told is a lie..Here's what REALLY happened.." No thanks.

That's where I tone out of AC.

You're ok with a secret world-wide sect of Assassins running around throughout history influencing events and killing people with no recourse, but the sci-fi back story of the First Civilization and the Apples of Eden is where you draw the line?

Yup. Because it's stupid.

A secret group of assassins throughout time killing people and influencing history is equally stupid and ridiculous.

If I have one complaint about the backstory its that they tied it into the 2012 doomsday prophecy nonsense that was ramping up at the time. It just dates the game for me and reminds me of those nutjobs that came crawling out from under their rocks when all that was going on.

They spent five games making Desmond into a badass and then killed him after the third one. The Desmond missions from AC3 showed promise. Imagine if when you came out of the Animus it was like Watch Dogs styled moments? Then the moments out of the Animus are refreshing and fun - not a chore to aimlessly walk around in first person to listen to 99 minutes of useless dialogue for 1 minute of story development like in ACR and AC4.

I love the historical, sci fi, and conspiracy aspects of the series. The 2012 thing is a part of the conspiracy aspects. Conspiracy theories in general are out there. And besides, a game about history being dated? Kind of the point. Games take place in real time now. 2012 was the year Desmond saved the world, just like how 1507 was the year Ezio killed Cesare.

Anywho, Unity looks phenomenal. They seem to be "fixing" everything people have complained about in the past. I personally would keep buying until they stop making games, but the whole "parkour down", co-op, indoors, huge amount of people, etc etc just looks way too cool. Can't wait.

I don't have a problem with the *concept* of the meta-story in AC --- okay, aliens meddling with the evolution of humanity, got it; it's not like I haven't seen this story a thousand times before in sci-fi and comic books. My only problem with the animus was that it was so goddamn boring. With Altair or Ezio or Connor or Edward, there's *lots* of stuff to do, and rich environments to explore. Once you get to the Animus scenes, you get to wander around a modern office building, or a deserted villa, or an empty warehouse, and *occasionally* push a button for an elevator. At least Brotherhood (or Rev, I forget which) had the surreal Island to explore, but even that got more frustrating than interesting with the puzzle games.

If the modern world was a living, breathing open world environment, with actual exciting things for Desmond to do, I wouldn't hate the side-trips so much. As it stands now, I think the whole Desmond metastory would have been better suited for "breather" cutscenes to advance the storyline; not wasted on non-action walkabouts.

IA with those that say the sci-fi aspect of AC was always the worst part of the story. I liked the history stuff fine enough

I've gotta say, as cool as the demos and new features look, and despite how much I ended up loving ACIV when I wasn't too excited, I don't feel the same "must buy" feeling that I have with the last few AC games. I think it might be because I feel like I know nohing about this new protagonist and I'm not as interesting in taking over someone different outside of the recent Kenway story, and The French Revolution doesn't really interest me. I know I'll still get it because I know what to expect already and know I will enjoy it, but I'm much more comfortable waiting it out for this one than I've ever been before.

Yea it's gonna tough moving away from the pirate theme for me, but on the plus side I'm digging everything shown so far. Like every other AC prior(and most likely every future installment) I'll be snagging it day one. Ubi had me hooked a LONG time ago

Man, the online outrage over a lack of a female protagonist is annoying. Or am I just lurking on Neogaf too much?

Gamers just whine to hear themselves whine and they're always looking for the next thing to cry about, rather it be the non issue racism in Far Cry 4 or this. With that said tho, i am surprised one of the co op characters aren't female. Figured it would've added more diversity, but I honestly don't care.

I've read in a gaming news site that, unfortunately, games with female leads most often sell less than average.

It's sad, because it feels refreshing everytime you play as a female lead. Tomb Raider is a perfect example of a great game with a great female lead which sold less than expected.

Its easy not to care when you're the audience being catered to guys, really.

And Tomb Raider actually sold really well, its that Square Enix had crazy high predictions. Hitman and one of their other games in that period also came in below expectations despite strong sales.

I like the idea of multiplayer...but unless you have a group of people you know that you can play with..I think open multiplayer would just be a disaster.

Well Ubisoft has already released an Assassin's Creed game staring an female protagonist, so the complaints fall short for me.

It's always a shame when a community of gamers who have had high standards allow Game studios to make excuses. How would you feel if Mass Effect 4 didn't allow female characters? Dragon Age only having male humans?

Ubisoft now even refuses to talk about the subject.
It's clear they the truth is, they wanted to save a little amount of time and money, just make another annual AC game and release it for late quarter 2014.

I wouldn't be surprised if the decision came from marketing, some guys when they are forced to play as a girl freak out like they'll catch something. Nevermind how much more often women are asked to play as guys and do so.

I'm sorry but really? One vita game from 2012? Well quiet down ladies, that should keep you all busy until at LEAST 2019.
