Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

Skeptical as I am about this all, since it'll have been ten years or so since the first movie, it wouldn't be hard to turn this into Star Wars. All Jim would need do is vivisect a bunch of old SF pulps and stitch the pieces together with his Dances with Wolves motif (As opposed to the Akiro Kurosawa films that influenced Lucas) and viola - Star Wars, except with a more interesting setting and better characters.

It could work as long as he finds a very solid story to tell and finds some way to keep a human element in it. Jake is now a Navi so neither of the main characters will be human, and the humans who stayed on Pandora will run out of bottled oxygen to breathe sooner or later and they'll have to address that.

But yeah, unless he has a real corker of a story to tell that justifies all those movies, it's just going to be a lot of CGI eye candy.

Not sure the point of announcing this. Anyway lets hope he brings his A game.

They need to get off of Pandora first of all. There's no way it's the main location for four movies.

I want to see space battles with ships. Dog fights in space like Battlestar Galactica. And more importantly, I want to see more of Earth. And I want to see other planets.

Really, these need to be as different from the first one as possible, lol. We sat through 3 1/2 hours of blue people in the rain forest. Give us some hardcore sci-fi now.

I honestly feel like this is going to be a huge financial disaster of biblical proportions. If 2 is the slightest disappointment, 3/4/5 are instantly doomed. Each one will make less and less. It all starts with 2. It can't just be good - it has to be as mind blowing of a game changer as the first one, and that's simply impossible. It's impossible.

Fox needs to pull the plug right now.

Neither SW or Avatar (From what I recall; desperately need to rewatch this one) is really hard SF. I would love more of Avatar-universe Earth though. What little we got to see was neat. You're probably spot on about the profits not matching the budget. I'd like to think someone like Cameron knows what they're doing, but there's a first time for everything.

Also, a scary thing to consider is that the amount of movies he's making at one time is almost the amount of movies in his whole career, haha.

I wouldn't be surprised if he only directs 2 and gives 3/4/5 each to different directors.

We're in unchartered waters here. No studio has ever made four movies at once. The more I think about it, the more ridiculous it sounds.

I just want a trailer for the 2nd one instead of hearing about them adding more movies. Its been what? 10 years?

The trick with Avatar and what I find to be it's most underrated element is how it takes the basic tropes of nature worship and mysticism and presents simple scientific explanations for them. In many of these stories there's a real kind of life force/ mother nature thing going on. in Avatar this interlocked system of life energy and consciousness literally exists. Their mother nature is a planetary super organism. It is explained quickly but their trees form a massive neural network. In real religions and in these stories there is often a sacred place or a place where the spirits of ancestors or worshiped. For the na'vi their consciousnesses are literally backed up and stored in the neural networks. Avatar has many faults but I always felt it never got enough credit for emplying some really neat sci-fi concepts. There's actually a TNG episode that touches on a similar idea with patches of salt water forming a planetary brain.

7.

Cameron has also spoken about a similar issue about wanting to continue to impress with each film but faci g the challenge of making something in 2016 that will blow people away I. 2021. But of a losing battle there.

I actually think at least the first sequel stands to do insanely well. I think people are too quick to dismiss how well this was received outside the United states, how much the anti imperialist message was appreciated and how well these kind of spectacles travel. The international market has only expanded in the last 7 years.

I think one thing is to be certain. Never underestimate James Cameron. This man's career has been built on people telling him he would fail. And not only has he proven them wrong, but each time he has topped himself.

The best part of the DVD features is when they're discussing how Cameron came up with a ridiculous way to pull a bow string. The archery instructors they hired called b.s. and said no obe could shoot an arrow with the wrist twist. Cameron walked up and shot an arrow his way and hit the target. Dude just does what he wants.

What a Boss! :woot:

No way in hell it's gonna be a financial disaster. This saga will make absurd amount of money.

Also, I heard somewhere he will film all 4 films right away.

holy **** all 4 Back to back nahhh i hope he got many ideas for new Creatures and Tribes

They were writing the scripts and drawing stuff for years. So who knows.

He's overestimating his own franchise.

Say what you want, at least James Cameron has always been genuinely passionate about everything he does. I definitely rather see four more Avatar-movies from him than another superhero-movie from Zack Snyder or any other director for hire. Or watch Disney milking the Star Wars-cow dry.

Next year we'll be hearing that there is going to be 5 sequels but we still won't have anything actually coming together

I mean, it's not like he's going to go broke doing it. His wallet shall remain fat long after he's gone.

The guy can be a dick, but you know I'd be a dick too if most people my whole life said I couldn't do something.

Not if he's confident with what he has. I mean four sequels announced before the next one comes out? It's ridiculous now, but if the sequel is something that will truly blow us away (his best movies are sequels after all) then we'll be on board. He above all knows he has to top himself in every way for this to happen. It's really no different than a major studio setting up a franchise. Even if they may not announce it, a best case scenario for a studio is to get as many sequels as they can. I mean there are going to be seven Fast and Furious sequels. Seven. Four Avatar sequels sounds laughable, but in this industry, it's not unusual and you combine that with Cameron, I won't underestimate him. By this point we should give him more credit.

The last two films he was doubted and under-estimated on made a combined almost $5 billion.

I just wish there was bit more actual movement on this. Certainly no one can accuse him of a rush job.
