Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

I can't believe Fox agreed to this.

Fox and Cameron have lost their damn minds.

Do you realize the budget for this entire thing is probably $2 billion?

Insane in the membrane.

No way it's 2 bil., unless it's some cutting edge technology, never seen before. Besides, when it's filmed as one piece, it becomes cheaper.

I'd say it's $1.5 billion easily. That includes marketing.

Is this really news? Didn't we already hear about four sequels a while back? I just recall reading all the talk about four sequels before.

It's really rather sad to see James waste the next ten years of his life on this.

So, 4 films. 12 hours of tree-hugging?

But I'm still super-excited. Re-watched the film recently, for the first time since 2010, and found it be really-really great. CGI still holds really well. The story works on all levels, great acting, music and action.

Good. Cameron build a world with depths, technology, fauna and flora, great characters, he is not bound to franchise issues ( see Terminator ). Simplicity ( story in the first movie ) doesn't mean stupidity.

LOL Avatar 5 now! I just think he keeps announcing sequels so advance... that the second film is not even in production yet... like sure, he's probably writing the 5th one but like, keep it to yourself for a while like when the other sequels are already released.

Right it was three. I was just thinking four movies total. Now it's five.

Nobody cares now but everyone will be there opening weekend after months of marketing and hype building.

Or the first trailer that comes out. People will be in this very thread talking about the movie.

It's not people are against Avatar sequels - it's merely folks thinking that he's putting too many eggs in one basket. He's delayed the second film several times and it's almost ten years already. And now there's news of a fifth movie and the first sequel one isn't close to being released. Still.

There's a part of me who thinks he should've waited till the release of part two, then announced the other movies. But who am I know?

Also for the past 8 years, the franchise has been dormant. It was until last year that it was announced we're getting an Avatar comic book series. That's 6 years after the release of the film. There's no new toys, novels or games to speak of. So yes, people are kinda eh on it.

And yes he has proven is wrong twice already but he's not infallible. He's a human being.

I'm pretty sure he's made a deal with the devil. :o

Don't forget Avatar land!
I still can't believe Disney is dumping money into that.

Cameron said he was going to get the sequels made for less money, like $150M apiece. Even if he stuck to that, the total cost for all four movies, plus P&A costs, will probably be $1.2 billion all in.

Still a crazy amount of money.

my biggest problem here is that i belive that all those movies will be realesed like tv episodes. no movie will have a beginning and an end. it will end like Hobbit 2 or like Hunger Games 2. open. The more popular marvel is becoming....the more obvious its becoming that longform storytellign can work...........the more obvious it is why Cameron wants to realese 5 sequels .

For avatar 2 to come out in december 2018 they would need to start filming at least this summer.........which they wont. so december 2018 is not happening.

Wait a second. what if Cameron is trolling FOX who gave him around 500 millions for Avatar 2009 ?

If they each all make over 2 billion it will be worth the wait I suppose.

2009 - 2023

Avatar: 5 films (1 released, 4 scheduled)

Marvel: 32 films (10 released, 13 scheduled, 9 more likely (not including Spider-Man))

DCEU: 23 films (2 released, 11 scheduled, 10 more likely)

X-Men: 14 films (5 released, 5 scheduled, 4 more likely)

Transformers: 10 films 3 released, 3 scheduled, 4 more likely)

Star Wars: 9 films (1 released, 5 scheduled, 3 more likely)

Fast & Furious: 7 films (4 released, 3 scheduled, 1 more likely)

Im mostly curious as to how will he keep it fresh? Surely, each sequel will be a completely different beast from one another and from the original Avatar, knowing Cameron's sequel philosophy. Perhaps in one of them the action will take place on Earth? Who knows

I take issue with Cameron thinking this is a huge saga franchise when the evidence just isn't there. There has been one movie. No novels, no comics, no video games (one crappy tie in), no toys, no cartoon... Just one movie.

To suddenly vomit an entire franchise in our laps at one time runs the risk of being rejected by the GA, I think. The Matrix did this exact same thing. Way too much at one time when there wasn't a demand. You got to make people want this stuff, not give them everything in one go.

Cameron's essentially trying to make this Star Wars overnight, and that's not how it works.
