Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

if they would start rendering today they would maybe finish in 2018 hehe :)

Yeah, unless they've been secretly filming and doing FX going for the last six+ months, I don't think this movie has the time to get done for 2017 anyway.

VFX also happens while the movie is shooting. So it can be done.

There's one thing of several things holding up production: Zoe Saldana's availability. Right now she's shooting Live By Night and then starts GOTG 2 next month. Then she has to do press for Star Trek Beyond in July...

That's likely not the big reason why Avatar 2 is taking so long, likely Cameron taking his sweet time doing pre-viz on all three movies. It's not like Sam Worthington has a full scheduled nowadays...

2017 is looking unlikely only for the fact that I believe Cameron is keeping Disney abreast with his schedule, as Disney has an Avatar Park planned.

I don't believe Disney was/is looking to compete with Avatar.

Star Wars: Episode VIII won’t be facing Avatar 2 at the box office

When The Walt Disney Studios announced on Wednesday that Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Episode VIII will now open in theaters seven months later than previously planned, on December 15, 2017, many were quick to point out that it could be facing James Cameron’s Avatar 2 at theaters that same month. After all, it was just last month when Cameron mentioned that “Christmas of ’17 is the target.”

According to TheWrap, that no longer is the case. While the studio would not comment to them, the site says that sources confirmed the 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment sequel won’t be ready by Christmas 2017. Also, The Walt Disney Studios certainly wouldn’t be as confident as they were with the Episode VIII move if they didn’t know something we didn’t. In fact, they are also working together with Cameron on the Avatar theme park attraction coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
A release date for Avatar 2 reportedly has not been set, which puts into question the previously-mentioned December 2018 and 2019 releases for Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 as well. Could we possibly see a global shift to summer 2018, 2019 and 2020 for all three films? Cameron intends to shoot all three films at the same time in New Zealand, so the year-apart release pattern should still be in place.
Confirmed to feature the return of cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, Avatar 2 and the two additional sequels will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment. The sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.
The original 2009 Avatar remains the top-grossing movie of all time with $2.782 billion at the worldwide box office.

Yeah that was pretty obvious.

Also it's not just Avatar 2 Cameron is working on he's going to be shooting the 3 sequels simultaneously.

At this point 2018 is the earliest.

Fact is that no matter where Cameron planned to go. To space or Mars or whatever. the scripts could already be finished. But they are not. which is very strange.

We know that Cameron promised Fox that he would do sequels if Avatar made some money. Remember in 2008-2009 there was fear that it wouldnt make a lot of money. Promising a big franchise is how he got money in the first place. You can not get a greenlight with a 400-500 million movie( yes i said it. its not a 250 budget movie. People who worked on it are saying that it was over 400. enough) by pitching a one standalone movie.
Cameron not wanting to make sequels would also make me happy because it would mean he didnt become a lazy storyteller who wants to make only avatar movies.I need news that he is directing Battle Angel. please Cameron it has to be you.

It makes me a little sad now that SW fans will use this news that Cameron was afraid of SW movies. he is not.

So 10 years after the first film are enough people still going to be clamoring for an Avatar 2? I mean I know doubting Cameron is not the smartest idea but people hardly anyone discusses the first film and it's the highest grossing movie worldwide.

Despite how big TFA has been and passing Avatar domestically, Avatar has still about double the overseas grosses of TFA.

I honestly think if no one in North America saw Avatar 2 it'd still be a box office smash.

Now think about how much the OS market has grown since 2009? I can see $500 million coming from China alone.

Avatar 2 at least is going to make bank if only for the reasons I mentioned.

I never underestimate Jim Cameron. Avatar 2 is going to kick some major butt IMO.

It would probably surprise people again.

This film already went through years of scripting only for that to happen? And there's still that live theme park coming up. If Independence Day got a sequel, this one will get too.

I'm telling you, 3 films dropped out of thin air and landing on the general audience isn't going to end well. Exhaustion, lack of interest, being forced into something... Bad combo.

The only time it ever worked was with LotR. The Hobbit couldn't do it, and The Matrix couldn't do it.

Harry Potter and the MCU are two exceptions because they're not all being simultaneously filmed.

I'm not sure if they are really trying to film 3 films at the same time, but they'll make it (Avatar 2 at least) when they are ready.

And its not gonna come out of thin air, they'd probably do a lot of hype/promo months before its release to make people aware that there's a new Avatar film after like 10 years.

Fox needs to pull the plug now.
They can't pull the plug on something that doesn't exist. Cameron constantly talks about Avatar 2, 3 and 4 and it's 2016 and still nothing. Still no scripts and still not shooting the movies.

Didn't he say that he already written drafts for those 3 movies?

What's the big deal about this movie and the sequel? How did it make so much money? I'm not trying to hate but rather, just understand.

Oct 2010: Avatar 2 will open Dec 2014
Jan 2012: It'll open Dec 2015
Aug 2013: I mean Dec 2016
Jan 2015: Dec 2017
Jan 2016: December 2017 release cancelled, no new date set.

:whatever:

I'm in that category wondering if anybody still really cares about this franchise.
