Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

He didnt direct Piranha 2 tho, he only shot two scenes and shot them on the site, then had nothing to do with editing them etc (one was morgue scene the other one escaped my mind)
I see. Thanks for the clarification.

Anyway, as far as the comparison to Star Wars, SW is a mythology that made name for scifi, and has been around for many generations, its unfair to compare one recent movie, however successfull, to a mythology thats everywhere since the 70s with 8 films, animated series' and many books and graphic novels.
Okay...but I never said that Avatar IS a Star Wars level franchise yet. I simply said that James Cameron is trying to elevate it to a similar level with these sequels.

Anyway, we'll see what happens, for me its hard to predict. I was sure that Avatar will be a big hit, but around SpiderMan's numbers, so my preditions arent really fortune teller's skills
Cameron's last couple of efforts are elusive when it comes to box office predictions. I know it'll do well, just because Cameron knows how to make a movie that resonates with the majority of the market. I just hope his age won't stifle his creativity, ala Ridley Scott.

Cameron's trying to create his own Star Wars/LotR level sci-fi fantasy franchise apparently. One thing I've learned is that whenever I doubt him he blows my expectations out of the water. Even when taking the criticisms into account, he's yet to make a bad film since his first one (Piranha 2).

I do wish that he'd directed Battle Angel before doing more Avatar...but it seems like he's committed to telling his Magnum Opus before his end. And honestly, despite the hate I still enjoy watching Avatar from time to time. Sure it's derivative but so is Star Wars. My dream Cameron directed movie would have been Metal Gear though. If ever there was an already existing franchise that would've been perfect for him (besides Alien), it would've been Metal Gear.

I too don't get the hate for Avatar. Sure it's generic and cliche, but so are plenty of praised movies now a days. But as usual Cameron makes you care for the characters and the conflict. And the fact you root for the Na'vi at the end shows you how successfully he did that. It's not his best movie but its still a very good one.

I don't mind Cameron doing so many Avatar films, as long as they're good. Since day one, it was obvious Avatar was going to be cliche and predictable, but i remember walking out of that film wondering how much better the sequels were probably going to be, since Cameron had already introduced the world he wanted.

It's only a shame he realy has taken a long while to make films. I understand that he's spent that time improving technology and exploring the ocean, but a part of me was interested in seeing how his Alita film could have been like. Also hoping to one day see his film based on Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a man who survived both Hiroshima and Nagasaki's bombings.

Anyway, i doubt he's going to make many more films that aren't Avatar sequels. As a film director, he has made enough classics and successes to finance his explorations.

Avatar 2 will be a family saga, says Sam Worthington

“They’re going to be shooting concurrently,” said Worthington. “The plan is to have some time in between, I think, but these things are always ambiguous until they start. We’re still set to start in the summer, though. James needed time to perfect the scripts. Whenever he says jump I go because he’s the man. I’ve read all the scripts, they’re great. This is going to be Jake eight years later, and he’s got a family now. This film is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen. The world is bigger than the first one, but essentially, it’s a movie about family. Jake will still have that essence of a kid seeing the world for the first time, but he’s been living in the world for a while now, so what’s this world he’s seeing now for the first time? The film will explore that within this family dynamic.”

Speaking with The Daily Beast, director James Cameron recently confirmed the Avatar sequels scripts are in place and the actors will be assembling later this year to begin the motion-capture part of production.

“The thing is, my focus isn’t on Avatar 2. My focus is on Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 equally. That’s exactly how I’m approaching it. They’ve all been developed equally. I’ve just finished the script to Avatar 5. I’m now starting the process of active prep. I’ll be working with the actors in the capture volume in August, so I’m booked in production every day between now and then. Our volume is up and running, and everything is designed, and so we’re going full-guns right now. I feel like I’ve been let out of jail, because I’ve been in the writing cave for the last two years. I’m actually enjoying life. I don’t enjoy writing. I wouldn’t wish writing on a dog.”

This ad has been getting a lot of airtime lately.

It's not new. Back to the Future 2&3 were filmed back to back. It saves costs and time.

Finally, after years of preparation, the four sequels to “Avatar” are finally set to begin filming this year with My Entertainment World posting a listing saying that shooting on the motion capture is slated to begin on August 15th.
Fox and director James Cameron have yet to say anything official about a shooting date beyond things starting sometime later this year, now we have an idea when. The scripts for all four films are complete with the shoot set to cover all of the movies at the same time.
Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Sam Worthington are all coming back for the sequels ad Cameron said last month that all the designs are done and everything is pretty much ready to go.
Unlike with many films, pre-production on this was previously rumored to have been so extensive that post production will be a relatively streamlined process and won’t take as much time as you might think – which means the December 2018 release the first one is targeting could be met.

As one could have expected:

Avatar 2 won’t release in 2018

The development of James Cameron’s Avatar sequels has been a long undertaking by the filmmaker since the original film’s release in 2009, with the number of features growing from three to four and frequent delays in release. Now, in an interview with The Star, Cameron has confirmed that the previously-announced 2018 release date won’t be met.

“Well, 2018 is not happening. We haven’t announced a firm release date. What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases. So we’re not making Avatar 2. We’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It’s an epic undertaking. It’s not unlike building the Three Gorges dam. (Laughs) So I know where I’m going to be for the next eight years of my life. It’s not an unreasonable time frame if you think about it. It took us four-and-a-half years to make one movie and now we’re making four. We’re full tilt boogie right now. This is my day job and pretty soon we’ll be 24-7. We’re pretty well designed on all our creatures and sets. It’s pretty exciting stuff. I wish I could share with the world. But we have to preserve a certain amount of showmanship and we’re going to draw that curtain when the time is right.”
20th Century Fox had previously announced a December 2018 release date for the first sequel along with the reveal that subsequent films in the franchise would arrive in December 2020, December 2022, and December 2023, though that release pattern now remains to be seen.
Cameron also recently made an interesting, albeit spoilerish, reveal about the upcoming Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom (via io9), saying the theme park attraction actually takes place in the canon of the films… but after all of the sequels.
“So it’s Avatar the first movie, then there are the four sequels that we’re working on now and then a whole generation after that, when all the conflict, all the struggle and all the warfare between the Na’vi and the humans is over; and the Na’vi have welcomed us to Pandora to help us understand nature and ourselves better.”
Confirmed to feature the return of cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, the Avatar sequels will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment. The sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno, which Cameron will direct.

2019 will be 10 years from the first. Seems like a good year to release it. I guess the Han Solo film can move to December 2018 now.

And we'll be reading this the same time next year:

James Cameron said:

Well, whenever this actually happens and is released, I'll be there.

I guess we're all be really, really old when it comes out :) Jesus, Ive never thought Id be waiting this long for a sequel. What can you do tho

Calling those winged dragons banshees is especially lame, never thought of it before.

Why would an alien species call these animals the same name as an Irish mythical spirit?

It makes zero sense lol

Cameron is going to blow our ****ing minds regardless so I can wait an extra years after nine.

They didn't. They spoke an entirely different language. It was the humans who first encountered them that called them that.

At this point I wish film bloggers and film journalists would start treating Cameron like the boy who cried wolf. Every time he says something about avatar during an interview just say, "I don't believe you so let's just move."

I wonder which will come first, the 6th GoT book or Avatar 2.

Yeah. "You want our attention? Produce a goddamn trailer."

this is literally going to be like people that saw Star Wars for the first time in 77 seeing the prequels in 99.
