I'm not an effects guy, I really don't care... but yeah, these are maybe the best I've seen.

How are the effects? I assume at least on par with the first?

They're so much better. It didn't occur to me until actually seeing it myself that the effects could have so much room for advancement. It's so hilariously far beyond what anyone else is doing.

There's a shot fairly early in the movie of Tonowari splashing in the water on his skimwing. My daughter was sitting between me and my girlfriend and I waved at her to get her attention and then just started gesturing wildly at the screen. I could not believe what I was seeing. ****ing mind blowing.

Glad to see you guys all saying this lives up to the hype and improves on the first one. I have to admit, I'm less than psyched about the runtime, but other than that I can't wait to check this out and see what papa Jim has cooked up.

I actually think the 3 hour runtimes are an important reason as to why Cameron’s last 3 big films (including Titanic) have been so effective and monumentally successful, despite having relatively simple and often predictable story elements.

He just lets everything breathe and build in a way that feels natural and earned. You get to live in the world that he puts you in, whether it be the Titanic ship or Pandora. You get to spend so much time with the core characters, so you can really feel something when they are put in intense situations or one of them dies. There also also so many random little moments and shots in his films that just add to the feeling of wonder and spectacle, moments that would be cut from most studio mandated 2 hour films because they don’t necessarily drive the plot forward. You really get your money’s worth.

Cameron’s lack of interest in convoluted plot beats and mechanics may be his biggest strength as a storyteller.

I very much enjoyed this and it was better than the first film. The visuals are the best in any film to date, and I like the new characters. Had barely any sleep before watching it so I was struggling a bit towards the end but sure it would have been fine if I’d seen it on a normal day with time to rest beforehand. May well see this again in Jan.

Yes, and most other 2.5hr+ feel too long because they have bloated, over-indulgant plots. Not the case with Cameron's films.

Probably not my franchise. The underwater landscapes were cool and that House of the Dragon family dynamics were entertaining….but outside of that it didn’t catch me.
Will probably rewatch it on Disney plus next year, but will skip the first hour (and probably that annoying overlong showdown)

Yeah, this’ll have better legs than the MCU films cause it doesn’t have the rabid fanbase that rushes out right away. It could very well play like Maverick - and the first Avatar - over the holidays.

So I’m just going to not think about it too much for the next three weeks because I think it’ll be the third weekend of release that will tell us what our trajectory is — if we’re shallow or we run long, we’ll make more money. If we fall off quicker, it could be just market forces, it could be attention span, it could be Covid. There’s all sorts of things that I can’t predict right now.

The movie is... terrible? It's a collection of tropes, with no personality and with no driving force behind the flick. There is no arc, no story to it. It has a very new season television recap opening, but after that it's fine for a bit. The kids are more dynamic, more engaging then their parents, so they're fun enough for a bit. But nothing happens for two hours of this movie, and once they do, it's just one long action scene where again, nothing happens. Every big moment is easy to call from the start. Once the characters are laid out, obvious.

The film ends up being a remake of the first, but plays like an interlude to story that is setting up to repetitive as hell. I really want Cameron to actually get the next one out in 2 years, to see how it holds up at the box office.

Maverick is a sequel as well...

Maverick is a sequel to a movie older then a lot of us. It also is one of the best reviewed blockbusters of all time. But if you want to compare it to Maverick, compare it to Maverick. Compare it to NWH. We'll see how it goes. Those opening day numbers though, not great.
