This isn't a bad film. 82% on RT, plus a huge cult following. I'm trying to be objective, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't biased. It's in my top five.

Perfect 80's film.

The thing with that film is it is INTENTIONALLY hammy and cliche'. From the Kung Fu movie moments to Russell impersonating John Wayne the whole time, it revels in cheesiness, but it does it so well it is damn entertaining.

New Best Friend. An inept mystery starring Mia Kirshner, Dominique Swain, Taye Diggs (I think), Rachel True (again, I think), and Meredith Monroe. Plain-Jane Kirshner (Naked Mandy from 24...as the ugly girl) ingratiates herself with Monroe's in-crowd and for no real reason at all turns into a hot ****-lesbian drug addict and father-stealing sociopath. Then she ends up almost dead by a drug overdose and one of her new friends did it. Horridly acted, directed, written...and completely compelling.

The first movie is far more serous, with very light fantasy elements . This movie is alot more fantasy heavy, goofy. With really bad acting. It's still weirdly charming though. And it's always great to a see a fantasy movie before we got bloated with CGI tat.

It's more than just deliberately cheesy, it's downright subversive. It's a hell of a lot smarter that it seems on the surface. Mr. Swaggering-Tough-Guy-Thinks-He's-John-Wayne Jack Burton is a nincompoop full of hot air, whose constantly out of his depth, who keeps losing his weapons, who keeps knocking himself unconscious, and who keeps getting his ass handed to him in fights. It's his minority "sidekick" whose actually the badass. It's a giant middle finger to the classic Hollywood leading man and all the action movie tropes there in.

So yeah, it's a genuinely awesome movie.

Also loved Death To Smoochy and Waterworld.

Waterworld always interested me and it's too bad that we never got a sequel in that world.
