Bad Robot/Jonathan Nolan Bringing "Westworld" to HBO

That would be an interesting theory...

Great premiere!

It's got that Crighton spirit down. This has the potential to best the next great sci fi story/show. I'm still thinking about it. And I'm thinking Harris will be my favorite character. I thought he'd be like a Smith anomaly type who was the one who knows something is wrong, but the fact he's a guest who wants to be the bad guy is pretty great and even better. Perhaps he's a bored corporate guy for this company or the head of it.

I need my Ed Brubaker episode now.

I must've forgotten that Hemsworth #3 was going to be in this.

Damn good premiere.

To reply to the previous posts about the gunslinger and what he said:

He says he's a guest but honestly just because he says it I don't think necessarily makes it so. Maybe. But I have this feeling he is one of the older models that maybe became self-aware, and the "game" he's talking about is trying to fully get out of Westworld. Maybe not though. But for someone that does that kind of terrible stuff I'm not going to take everything at face value. Now as for him not being able to get shot, he may have re-programmed some of these robots as someone mentioned before, I have no idea. But it's just a thought. I just am not certain on taking anything at face value with the gunslinger.

The hosts can't harm the guests up until the point where Dolores squashes that fly at the end of the episode, so the Man in Black is definitely a human.

....maybe because what he did to her caused that. We don't know. Sorry it's not enough to say nope case closed.

Beyond what's presented in the show, the producers have explicitly identified the Man in Black as a human, and we already know what caused Dolores' aberrant behavior: the update that Bernard, Elsie, Cullen, Lee, and the rest of the 'gamemakers' thought they'd purged.

Where have the producers said this? Must of missed this.

The Man in Black has been identified as a human "guest" in all of the promotional material put out for the show and in a character guide put together by Entertainment Weekly. EW also identified the character ax human in an interview question they posed to Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy, and even though the interviewer threw a caveat (seemingly) into the equation, both Nolan and Joy answered the question straightforwardly and explained why they inverted the model from the film in making the robots the protagonists, so unless they're lying to hide a twist (and there's no actual evidence of such being the case), the MiB being human is not something that was intended to be questioned.

Still I'd like a link to that interview. And that very well may be the case. But I just think they may be setting up a twist with it.

Not sure of this has been mentioned, so I wanted to throw it out there. Considering ERW's character is the first host, what are the chances she is based on someone important in the creator's life? His daughter, his wife, etc.

I was thinking that too this morning. That very well may be the case.

I wondering if this will play into why she can't be decommissioned. Also found it disturbing how she has been injured so many times, she is basically brand new. Kind of tells you what people go there for.

she's definitely someone important to Hopkins' character.... though with what goes on in WestWorld, it's a little surprising he'd use a face that means/meant so much to him...

EDIT- Maybe that's the reason he used their face... something happened to the original woman that he blames himself for... and he punishes himself by being the one to repair the damage to the HOST everytime it's damaged... forcing himself to see her face broken and relive the horror of what he did to her himself or what he didn't stop from happening to her by someone else.

that's why she's still in WestWorld and not decommissioned like the other HOSTs...

There's two reasons why I dont think this would be the case.

Firstly the robot or AI replica of a deceased loved one is somewhat overused to the point where it's a trope.

Secondly if she was modelled after someone Ford or one of the creators cared about, wouldnt it be kind of sick considering the fact that she likely gets raped and killed by hosts on a weekly basis?

Well to be fair the shows premise is a bit of a cliche, though I see your point.

As to your second point, that would be part of the psychology of it all. Look how the creator interacts with his "children". He clearly cares for them, and yet they are raped and murdered every single day.

I bet you one of the characters in the control room turns out to be a robot.

Dolores isn't the first, though. Just the oldest in service, I thought.

Probably because she learned the correct way to answer the engineers/programmers.

Just watched this big again to check it out. He says she is the oldest host in the park. Whether that is including those decommissioned or not, I am not sure. They also emphasized how many times she has had to be repaired.
