Ban on the N-word

I dont like the word I dont use the word but it shouldn't be banned . . . .

It only has power if you let it, and banning it would increase that power.

Good post. If you put a national ban on it, it would only incite those who would use it harmfully to do so more often.

I agree that it's said far too often in song lyrics. You know it's bad when I can't even sing along to the majority of modern songs anymore because it has the n-word in it over and over.

No, I was clearly talking about the African American community the whole time. As an Irish-American, my anscestors weren't involved with the slave trade, and were treated horribly upon arrival in this country as well. I still don't get upset when someone calls me a "mick", or even if a black person (or any person of color) were to call me "cracker". Words are only as powerful as you make them, and that's where the absurdity of this whole issue comes in. Wishing to ban the word only makes it more powerful, and it won't just go away forever.

I mean.....come on dude, you can't possibly tell black people (especially those elderly ones who survived those photos I posted) that this word is "empowering". And let me tell you something....whether they called your people "micks" or not, they still could vote, they didn't sit in the back of the bus, they didn't get lynched, they had the best textbooks, they could President.....etc. It only amounted to "name-calling". For blacks "Ni--er" went from name-calling to actualization. It went to stuff like this....

The Irish have been treated like **** by the British, but not so much the Americans. Not so sure on the history there.

The n--er word did translate from words to action. It dehumanized the negro in the eyes of whites. Thus making those lynchings even easier to do. After all, it ain't a "human being" were killing, in their minds. Words carry a lot of weight.

And even it they didn't get a warm welcome,in the south, it never went as far as what you saw in that photo.

You're confusing the Scots-Irish with Irish Americans. Both were Irish immigrants to this country, but the Scots-Irish were the non-Catholics who became more prominent in the south. I was referring to Irish Americans, who immigrated primarily to the east coast. And you can't possibly believe that the racist philosophy which saw blacks as subhuman would not have existed if not for a single word.
